Instructions
getting started
  1. Choose a design option for your purse – floral or diamond. You can print the embroidery patterns (pages 4-6) on any color fabric to coordinate with your color scheme. Or you can print the embroidery with a fabric background included (pages 1-3). This should be printed on white fabric for best results.
  2. Decide what kind of fabric you want to use. For this project, we printed on silk, which creates an elegant quilted purse.

  3. To customize your purse, type your message in the appliqué. You could write “For My Daughter on her Wedding Day,” for example.
  4. Test your project first by printing a sample print onto paper.
  5. Make sure your print settings are on "Best Quality" and "Plain Paper." Remove the paper from your printer and insert the fabric sheets one sheet at a time. For detailed instructions, read more about printing on inkjet fabric.
  6. Print your project onto the printable fabric sheets and set aside to dry completely.
  7. Peel the paper backing from the fabric sheets.
  8. Follow the manufacturer's instructions (if any) for additional treatment to the fabric sheets.

  9. Place your fabric sheets on a cutting mat.
  10. Using the straightedge as your guide, use the rotary cutter to trim the excess fabric away from the pieces of the purse.
  11. If you are making the floral purse, embroider the floral pattern using your choice of embroidery floss.

  12. Pin right sides of the purse exterior together. Be sure to match the pattern of the top flap to the bottom piece. Sew top flap (the small piece) to the bottom piece at the seam allowance.
  13. Pin right sides of the purse lining together. Sew top flap (the small piece) to the bottom piece at the seam allowance.
  14. Press seams flat (no steam).
  15. With right sides together, lay fabric on top of the batting. Pin in place.

  16. Using the straightedge and rotary cutter, cut batting the same size as the fabric.
  17. Sew at 1/4-inch seam allowance, leaving 1 1/2-inch opening.
  18. Turn right side out and press flat (no steam).

  21. Fold up the bottom of the purse, leaving 1/2-inch between the fold of the top flap and the edge of the bottom piece. Pin in place.
  22. Beginning in the bottom corner with the top flap open, stitch around the edges of the entire purse, finishing at the opposite bottom corner.
  23. Hand-stitch or fuse the customized label to the inside flap of the purse.

  • Add a decorative button and loop closure to the front. Or you can attach two small lengths of ribbon to close it with a bow.
  • Make a short handle for the purse with a ribbon entwined in a chain. Attach on the top corners.
  • Use French knots as accents in your embroidery – you can also sew a bead on for an accent.
