Blinking Lights on the HP Deskjet F4200 All-in-One Printer Series

Blinking lights

The following sections describe the most common combinations of blinking (flashing) lights displayed on the product control panel, followed by solutions for each combination. Find the blinking lights pattern you are experiencing, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.
NOTE:An E might also appear in the Number of Copies display. This is an additional indication that there is an issue with the product that needs to be resolved. The presence of an E, however, does not affect the meaning of the blinking lights, and can be disregarded for troubleshooting purposes.

NOTE:There might be more than one solution for some blinking lights patterns. After you find the pattern that matches your blinking lights pattern, try each solution in the order presented until you resolve the issue.

Issue: All the lights are off

In this normal condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:
  • Ink Level lights: Off
  • Check Print Cartridge lights: Off
  • Paper Selection lights: Off
  • Enlarge/Fit to Page light: Off
  • Resume light: Off
  • Power button light: Off

Solution one: Turn on the All-in-One

Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
If the product does not turn on, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Make sure that the All-in-One is plugged in

Follow these steps to make sure that the power cord is connected to the rear of the product and plugged into an electrical outlet.
  1. Check the rear of the product to make sure that the cord from the power supply is inserted securely into the power connection.
  2. Check the power supply to make sure that the power cord is securely plugged into it.
  3. Check the electrical outlet to make sure that the power cord is securely plugged into it.

  4. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  5. If the product does not turn on, follow the same steps and try a different wall outlet.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Press the Power button more slowly

The product might not respond if you press the Power button () too quickly.
Press the Power button () once slowly to turn on the product.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Reset the power module, and then test the power

Follow these steps to first reset the power module on the power cord, and then test the power on the product.
Step one: Reset the power module
The power module has a safety feature inside that protects the product during a power surge. If you experienced a recent power surge, the power module might need to be reset. Use the following steps to reset the power module.
  1. Disconnect the power supply from the rear of the product.

  2. Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet, power strip, or surge protector.
  3. If the product uses a power module with a detachable power cord, disconnect the cord from the power module.
  4. Wait 15 seconds.
  5. Reconnect the power cord to the power module.
  6. Plug the power cord back into a wall outlet. Do not use a power strip or surge protector.
  7. Check to see if the power module has an LED.
    • If the power module does not have an LED, continue to the next step.
    • If the power module has an LED, check to see if the LED lights up.
      • If the LED does not light up, contact HP to replace the power module. To buy a compatible power module, right-click the following link, How to Buy HP , and then click Open in New Window.
      • If the LED lights up, continue to the next step.
Step two: Test the power on the All-in-One
Follow these steps to test the power on the product.
  1. Reconnect the power supply to the rear of the product.
  2. Press and then quickly release the Power button () to start a power on/off cycle. Do not hold the button down.

    If you press and hold the Power button too long, the product might turn on and then off without restarting. If this happens, press and quickly release the Power button () again.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution five: Test the power with a compatible power cord from a different All-in-One

If you have another available power cord that is compatible with the product, use the alternate cord to test the power.
  1. Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  4. Connect the alternate power cord to the rear of the product.
  5. Plug the alternate power cord into the wall outlet.
  6. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  • If the product turns on with the alternate power cord, the original power cord caused the issue. Contact HP to replace the power cord. Right-click the following link, How to Buy HP , to buy a compatible power cord.
  • If the product does not turn on with the alternate power cord, continue to the next solution.

Solution six: Service the All-in-One

If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.

Issue: The Power button and one of the Paper Selection lights are on

In this normal condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:
  • Ink Level lights: Off
  • Check Print Cartridge lights: Off
  • Paper Selection lights: The current selection is on, and the others are off
  • Enlarge/Fit to Page light: Off
  • Resume light: Off
  • Power button light: On

    The product is on and ready for printing, scanning, faxing, or copying.

Copy, Scan, Fax, or Print

Press the appropriate button(s) on the product to perform the intended task.
  • If the product operates normally, allow the product to complete the job.
  • If after trying the task, a blinking light or combination of blinking lights displays on the product control panel, find the pattern you are experiencing in this document, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.

Issue: The Power button light blinks

In this normal condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:
  • Ink Level lights: Off
  • Check Print Cartridge lights: Off
  • Paper Selection lights: Off
  • Enlarge/Fit to Page light: Off
  • Resume light: Off
  • Power button light: Blinking

    The product is busy copying, scanning, faxing, printing, or performing a maintenance job, such as alignment. The front access door or the cartridge access door might be open.

Solution one: Close the front access door and the cartridge access door

Make sure that the front access door and the cartridge access door are completely closed.

You might have to press the Resume button () again to resume the task.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Wait for the All-in-One to complete the job

Wait for the product to finish processing a copying, scanning, faxing, printing, or maintenance job.
  • If the product completes the job normally, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the product is unresponsive for more than 60 seconds, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Cancel and then retry the task

Follow these steps to cancel and then retry the current task.
  1. Press the Cancel button () on the control panel.
  2. If you cannot cancel the task, press and hold the Power button () for three seconds to turn off the product.
    • If the product successfully turns off, press the Power button () to turn on the product, and then press the appropriate button(s) on the product again to perform the intended task.
    • If the product does not turn off, continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Reset the All-in-One

Follow these steps to reset the product.
Step one: Perform a power reset
  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  2. With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  4. Wait at least 15 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  7. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button () to turn it on.
Step two: Print a self-test page
Printing a self-test page verifies if the hardware functions correctly.
  1. Load U.S. letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.
  2. On the control panel, press and hold the Power button () and the Cancel button () at the same time.
  3. Release both buttons at the same time. The product prints a self-test page.
    NOTE:It might take up to 30 seconds for a self-test page to print.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution five: Search for more information

Solution six: Service the All-in-One

Issue: The Power button light blinks fast for 3 seconds, and then remains on

In this normal condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:
  • Ink Level lights: Off
  • Check Print Cartridge lights: Off
  • Paper Selection lights: The current selection is on, and the others are off
  • Enlarge/Fit to Page light: Off
  • Resume light: Off
  • Power button light: Blinks fast for 3 seconds, and then remains on

    The product is busy with a task.

Solution one: Wait for the All-in-One to complete the job

Allow the product to complete the current job.
  • If the product completes the job normally, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the product is unresponsive for more than 60 seconds, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Cancel and then retry the task

Follow these steps to cancel and then retry the current task.
  1. Press the Cancel button () on the control panel.
  2. If you cannot cancel the task, press and hold the Power button () for three seconds to turn off the product.
    • If the product successfully turns off, press the Power button () to turn on the product, and then press the appropriate button(s) on the product again to perform the intended task.
    • If the product does not turn off, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Reset the All-in-One

Follow these steps to reset the product.
Step one: Perform a power reset
  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  2. With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  4. Wait at least 15 seconds.

Step two: Print a self-test page
Printing a self-test page verifies if the hardware functions correctly.
  1. Load U.S. letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.
  2. On the control panel, press and hold the Power button () and the Cancel button () at the same time.
  3. Release both buttons at the same time. The product prints a self-test page.
    NOTE:It might take up to 30 seconds for a self-test page to print.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Issue: The On/Resume button light blinks fast for 20 seconds, and then remains on

In this error condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:
  • Ink Level lights: Off
  • Check Print Cartridge lights: Off
  • Paper Selection lights: The current selection is on, and the others are off
  • Enlarge/Fit to Page light: Off
  • Resume light: Off
  • Power button light: Blinks for 20 seconds, and then remains on

    The product is trying to process a task and there is a communication problem with the computer.

Solution one: Make sure that your computer is on

Follow these steps to make sure that your computer is turned on.
  1. If the computer is turned off, press the power button on the computer to turn it on.
  2. Try the intended task again.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Check the connection between the All-in-One and the computer

Follow these steps to make sure that the USB cable is securely connected to the product and the computer.
Step one: Disconnect and then reconnect the USB cable
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.
    CAUTION:Do not disconnect the power cord during this step.

  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the computer.
  3. Wait five seconds.
  4. Securely reconnect the USB cable to the rear of the computer.
  5. Securely reconnect the USB cable to the rear of the product.

    NOTE:Make sure that the USB cable is connected correctly. The icon on the USB cable () generally faces up when the cable is connected correctly.
Step two: Test the connection
Press the appropriate button(s) on the product again to perform the intended task.
  • If the product operates normally, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the lights on the control panel still blink, continue to the next step.
Step three: Replace the USB cable
  1. Securely connect an alternate USB cable to the product.
  2. Securely connect the alternate USB cable to the computer.
    NOTE:HP supports USB cables less than 3 meters (9 feet 10 inches) in length.
Step four: Print a self-test page
Printing a self-test page verifies if the hardware functions correctly.
  1. Load U.S. letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.
  2. On the control panel, press and hold the Power button () and the Cancel button () at the same time.
  3. Release both buttons at the same time. The product prints a self-test page.
    NOTE:It might take up to 30 seconds for a self-test page to print.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Install the HP software

You must download and install the HP product software in order for your computer to detect the product.
Step one: Download and then install the HP software
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. If the Welcome to HP Support page opens, follow these steps:
    1. Type your printer model number.
    2. Click Go.
      You might need to select your printer model number from a list of similar printer models.
  4. Select your operating system, and then click Next.
    A list of drivers and other downloads display.
  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver - Product Installation Software.
  6. Click Download next to the full feature or solution software and driver listed, and then follow the on-screen instructions to save the driver to your computer.
Step two: Try the task again
Press the appropriate button(s) on the product control panel to try the intended task again.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Service the All-in-One

If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document.

Issue: The Resume light blinks

In this error condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:
  • Ink Level lights: Off
  • Check Print Cartridge lights: Off
  • Paper Selection lights: The current selection is on, and the others are off
  • Enlarge/Fit to Page light: Off
  • Resume light: Blinking
  • Power button light: On

    The paper tray is closed, or a problem exists with the paper, carriage, or paper feed rollers.

Solution one: Open the paper tray

Follow these steps to open the paper tray.
  1. Pull on the top of the closed tray, and then gently lower the tray until it is horizontal and stops.
  2. Pull out the tray extender, and then flip up the paper stop at the end.

    NOTE:For best results when loading legal-size paper, push in the paper tray extender before loading the paper to avoid a paper jam.
  3. Press the Resume button () to resume the task.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Load paper

Follow these steps to load letter or A4 paper into the product.
  1. Lower the paper tray, pull out the tray extender, and then flip up the paper stop at the end.

  2. Slide the paper width guide to its outermost position.

  3. Tap the stack on a flat surface to align the edges of the paper.
  4. Make sure that the paper is free of rips, dust, wrinkles, and curled or bent edges, and that all the paper in the stack is the same size and type.
  5. Insert the paper into the paper tray print side down until it stops. To avoid bending the paper, make sure that you do not push the paper in too far, or push too hard. If you are using letterhead, insert the top of the page first.
    Do not use too much paper. Make sure that the stack of paper is no higher than the top of the paper width guide.
    NOTE:Forcing the paper too far into the product might cause multiple sheets of paper to be fed through the print mechanism, or cause a paper jam.

  6. Slide the paper width guide inward until it stops at the edge of the paper.

  7. Press the Resume button () to continue the task.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Match the paper settings to the print job

Use one of the following methods to change the paper size settings in the print driver to match the print job. Create a custom paper size only if the correct paper size is not an option.
  1. In the program you are using on your computer, click File, and then click Print. The Print window opens.
  2. In the Name: drop-down list, select the correct product, if it is not already selected.
  3. Click Properties or Preferences in the upper-right corner of the Print window. The Properties or Printing Preferences window opens.
    NOTE:The name of the button or window depends on the software you are using.
  4. Click the Features tab.
  5. From the Size: drop-down list, click More to access the paper size options. The Size is: window opens.
  6. In the Size is: list, scroll down to the appropriate paper size category, and then select the paper size that matches the paper loaded in the product.
  7. Click OK to accept the settings.
  8. Try the intended task again.
  1. In the program you are using on your computer, click File, and then click Print. The Print window opens.
  2. In the Name: drop-down list, select the correct product, if it is not already selected.
  3. Click Properties or Preferences in the upper-right corner of the Print window. The Properties or Printing Preferences window opens.
    NOTE:The name of the button or window depends on the software you are using.
  4. Click the Features tab.
  5. From the Size: drop-down list, click Custom. The Custom Paper Size window opens.
  6. In the Name box, type a name for the paper size you are using. For example, if you are printing on 101.6 x 203.2 mm (4 x 8 inch) envelopes, type 4x8 envelopes.
    NOTE:You must type a custom size name in the Name box. If you do not, the Save button is unavailable when you try to save the setting.
  7. In the Paper Size area, type the measurement in the Width and Length boxes. For example, if you are printing on 101.6 x 203.2 mm (4 x 8 inch) envelopes, type 4 in the Width box, and then type 8 in the Length box.
  8. In the Units area, select the appropriate unit of measure, and then click Save.
    NOTE:If Save is unavailable, make sure that there is a name for the setting in the Name box.
  9. Click OK to accept the settings. The Custom Paper Size window closes.
  10. From the Size: drop-down list on the Features tab, click More.
  11. The Size is: window opens.
  12. In the Size is: list, scroll down to Custom, and then select the custom paper size you created.
  13. Click OK to accept the settings.
  14. Press the Resume button () to clear the error, and then try the task again.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Clear any jammed paper

Follow these steps to clear a paper jam from the product.
The following recommendations can help prevent recurring paper jams in your HP product.
  • Before loading paper in the tray, hold the stack of paper, and then tap the bottom edge on a flat surface so that the stack is even on all sides.
  • Make sure that the length and width adjusters on the tray are correctly positioned, and then push the stack of paper forward until it stops in the tray.
    CAUTION:Do not force the paper to move too far forward in the tray.
  • Do not overload the tray with paper.
  • Only add paper to the tray when the product is not printing.
  • Make sure the HP product supports the paper type. See the documentation that came with the HP product for more information.
  • Do not print on paper with paper clips or staples attached.
  • Do not use paper that is bent, torn, dusty, damp, wrinkled, curled, or paper that does not lie flat.
  • Use only one type of paper at a time. Do not mix different types, weights, or sizes of paper.
  • Do not use paper that is too thin, too thick, or too glossy for the product.
The following factors can cause paper jams:
  • Paper loaded incorrectly in the paper tray.
  • Damaged or dirty paper rollers.
  • Torn, wrinkled, or damp paper loaded in the paper tray.
  • The rear access door might not be closed or is not locked into place.
  • Paper was added to a stack already in the tray while the HP product was printing.
  • The tray contains more than one type of paper.
  • The paper is jammed inside the HP product where you cannot see it.
  • An obstruction is blocking the paper path.
  • Torn pieces of paper from a previous jam are stuck in the product.
  • The tray is too full.
  • If printing on an envelope, the edges of the envelope are bent.
Step one: Remove any loose paper
Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.
CAUTION:Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage the print mechanism.

Step two: Clear the paper jam from the rear of the All-in-One
CAUTION:Always try to pull jammed paper from the rear of the product or the paper tray. Pulling paper from inside the front cover can cause mechanical damage to the product.
  1. Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.
  3. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

  4. Remove the rear access door. Press in the tab on the left side of the door, and then pull the door away from the product to remove it.

  5. Gently remove any jammed paper or bits of torn paper from the rollers inside the product. Use both hands to pull any whole sheets of paper to avoid tearing them.

    CAUTION:Use a flashlight to thoroughly check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the product, more jams are likely to occur.

  6. Reattach the rear access door. Gently push the door forward until it snaps into place.

Step three: Clear the paper jam from the front of the All-in-One
If you cannot remove the paper jam from the rear of the product, follow these steps to remove the paper jam from the front.
  1. Open the front access door.

  2. Carefully remove any jammed paper from the front of the product.
    NOTE:Remove paper from the front of the product as carefully as possible. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the product, more paper jams are likely to occur, and this could damage the print mechanism.
  3. Close the front access door.

  4. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  5. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Step four: Print a self-test page
Printing a self-test page verifies if the hardware functions correctly.
  1. Load U.S. letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.
  2. On the control panel, press and hold the Power button () and the Cancel button () at the same time.
  3. Release both buttons at the same time. The product prints a self-test page.

Solution five: Check for carriage obstructions

Follow these steps to make sure that the carriage can move freely.
Step one: Make sure that the carriage can move freely
  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  2. Open the front access door.

  3. Without turning off the product, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
    CAUTION:You must disconnect the power cord to move parts by hand without the risk of an electrical shock.
  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  5. Look inside the product to see where the carriage is stuck, and then check for any torn paper or objects that might be restricting the carriage.
    NOTE:You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas for proper viewing.
  6. Reach inside the product through the cartridge access door, and then manually move the carriage.
    • If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the product, move the carriage to the left side of the product.
    • If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the product, move the carriage to the right side of the product.
    • If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the product, move the carriage to the right side of the product.
  7. Remove any loose paper or obstructions found.
  8. Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the product by gently pushing the carriage to the left and then to the right.
  9. Close the front access door.

  10. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  11. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  12. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  13. Check the control panel to make sure that the lights are no longer blinking.
Step two: Print a self-test page
Printing a self-test page verifies if the hardware functions correctly.
  1. Load U.S. letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.
  2. On the control panel, press and hold the Power button () and the Cancel button () at the same time.
  3. Release both buttons at the same time. The product prints a self-test page.
    NOTE:It might take up to 30 seconds for a self-test page to print.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution six: Clean the paper feed rollers

Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the paper feed rollers and cause paper jams and paper feed issues. Follow these steps to clean the paper feed rollers.
Step one: Clean the paper feed rollers
  1. Gather the following materials:
    • A clean, lint-free cloth, or any cloth that will not come apart or leave fibers
    • Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might damage the product)
  2. Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
  3. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  4. Remove the rear access door. Press in the tab on the left side of the door, and then pull the door away from the product to remove it.

  5. Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with bottled or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.
  6. Press the cloth against the paper feed rollers, and then rotate them upwards with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove any dust or dirt buildup.

  7. Allow the rollers to dry for 10 or 15 minutes.
  8. Check the paper feed rollers on the rear access door to make sure that they are clean, free of paper bits, and rotate freely.

  9. Reattach the rear access door. Gently push the door forward until it snaps into place.

  10. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  11. If the product does not turn on automatically, press the Power button () to turn it back on.
Step two: Print a self-test page

  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  4. Wait at least 15 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  7. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button () to turn it on.
Step two: Print a self-test page
Printing a self-test page verifies if the hardware functions correctly.
  1. Load U.S. letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.
  2. On the control panel, press and hold the Power button () and the Cancel button () at the same time.

Issue: The Check Print Cartridge lights blink

In this error condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:
  • Ink Level lights: Off
  • Check Print Cartridge lights: Blinking
  • Paper Selection lights: The current selection is on, and the others are off
  • Enlarge/Fit to Page light: Off
  • Resume light: Off
  • Power button light: On

    The cartridge access door is open, or a problem exists with the cartridges.

Solution one: Close the cartridge access door

Make sure that the cartridge access door is completely closed.

Solution two: Install the cartridges

Follow these steps to install the cartridges in the product. If you have already installed the cartridges, proceed to the next solution to check cartridge compatibility.
  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  2. Load plain white paper in the paper tray.

  3. Adjust the paper width guide inward until it rests against the side of the paper.

  4. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the far right side of the product.
    NOTE:If the carriage does not move to the right side, turn off the product, and then turn it on again.

  5. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent, and then remove the new cartridge from its packaging.
  6. Pull the pink pull tab to remove the protective tape from the nozzles.

  7. Hold the cartridge by its sides, and then slide the cartridge forward into its slot at a slightly upward angle.

Solution three: Check cartridge compatibility

Which cartridges you use might depend on your country/region. Follow these steps to purchase cartridges or check cartridge compatibility for your printer using HP SureSupply.
  1. Scroll to the bottom of the page and make sure that the country/region location is correct.
NOTE:For the United States only, go to the HP Home & Home Office Store .
Genuine HP cartridges can also be purchased from other retailers.
The cartridge selection number is located on the cartridge label.

Solution four: Remove and reinstall the cartridges

Follow these steps to make sure that both cartridges are installed and seated correctly.
Step one: Remove the cartridges
  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the far right side of the product.
    NOTE:If the carriage does not move to the right side, turn off the product, and then turn it on again.

  3. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent, and then press lightly on the top of the cartridge that you are removing to release it from its slot.

  4. Pull the cartridge toward you out of its slot.
  5. If the cartridge has protective tape covering its nozzles, use the pink pull tab to remove it.

  1. To reinsert, hold the cartridge by its sides, and then slide the cartridge forward into its slot at a slightly upward angle.

Solution six: Clean the cartridges and inside the All-in-One

Follow these steps to clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and inside the product.
  1. Gather the following materials:
    • Dry foam rubber swabs, a lint-free cloth, or any soft material that will not come apart or leave fibers (coffee filters work well)
    • Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might contain contaminants that can damage the cartridges)
      CAUTION:Do not use platen cleaners or alcohol to clean the cartridge contacts. These can damage the cartridge or the product.
  2. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  3. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the far right side of the product.
    NOTE:If the carriage does not move to the right side, turn off the product, and then turn it on again.

  4. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent, and then disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  5. Press lightly on the top of the cartridge that you are replacing to release it from its slot. Then slide the cartridge out of the carriage.
    NOTE:The black cartridge belongs in the slot on the right. The color cartridge belongs in the slot on the left.

    CAUTION:Do not remove both cartridges at the same time. Remove and clean each cartridge one at a time. Do not leave a cartridge outside the product for more than 30 minutes.
  6. Hold the cartridge by its sides.
  7. Dip a clean foam rubber swab or lint-free cloth into distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from it.
  8. Clean the copper-colored electrical contacts.

  9. Allow the contacts to dry for about ten minutes.
  10. Use a second moistened foam rubber swab or lint-free cloth to clean the gold-colored electrical contacts in the carriage, inside the product.

  11. Wait about ten minutes to allow the electrical contacts to dry, or use a new swab or dry, clean cloth to dry them.
  12. To reinsert, hold the cartridge by its sides, and then slide the cartridge forward into its slot at a slightly upward angle.

  3. Check the print carriage slots for a missing or incorrectly installed cartridge.
    NOTE:The black cartridge goes in the slot on the right, and the color cartridge goes in the slot on the left.

    • If the indicated cartridge is installed, proceed to the next step to remove the cartridge, and then reinstall it.

  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  4. Wait at least 15 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  7. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button () to turn it on.
Step two: Print a self-test page
Printing a self-test page verifies if the hardware functions correctly.
  1. Load U.S. letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.
  2. On the control panel, press and hold the Power button () and the Cancel button () at the same time.
  3. Release both buttons at the same time. The product prints a self-test page.
    NOTE:It might take up to 30 seconds for a self-test page to print.

Issue: The Power button light is on, and all the other lights are off

In this error condition, the following blinking lights pattern displays on the control panel:
  • Ink Level lights: Off
  • Check Print Cartridge lights: Off
  • Paper Selection lights: Off
  • Enlarge/Fit to Page light: Off
  • Resume light: Off
  • Power button light: On

    The protective tape on one or both of the cartridges was not removed.

Solution one: Remove the protective tape from the cartridges

Follow these steps to check for and remove the protective tape on the cartridges.
Step one: Remove the cartridges
  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  2. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the far right side of the product.
    NOTE:If the carriage does not move to the right side, turn off the product, and then turn it on again.

  3. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent, and then press lightly on the top of the cartridge that you are removing to release it from its slot.

  4. Pull the cartridge toward you out of its slot.
  5. If the cartridge has protective tape covering its nozzles, use the pink pull tab to remove it.

    CAUTION:Do not touch the copper-colored electrical contacts or the ink nozzles on the cartridge. Doing so can cause bad electrical connections, clogged ink nozzles, or poor print quality.

  6. Repeat these steps to remove the other cartridge.
Step two: Reinstall the cartridges
  1. To reinsert, hold the cartridge by its sides, and then slide the cartridge forward into its slot at a slightly upward angle.

  2. Firmly push the cartridge in until it snaps into place.

  3. Repeat these steps to reinsert the other cartridge into its designated slot.
  4. Close the cartridge access door.

  5. Wait for the product to print an alignment page.
  6. Load the alignment page print side down on the scanner glass.

  7. Lower the scanner lid, and then press the Scan button () to complete the alignment.
  8. Reconnect the USB cable to the rear of the product.
  9. Try the intended task again.

  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

Solution one: Check for carriage obstructions

Follow these steps to make sure that the carriage can move freely.
Step one: Make sure that the carriage can move freely
  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  2. Open the front access door.

  3. Without turning off the product, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
    CAUTION:You must disconnect the power cord to move parts by hand without the risk of an electrical shock.
  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  5. Look inside the product to see where the carriage is stuck, and then check for any torn paper or objects that might be restricting the carriage.
    NOTE:You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas for proper viewing.
  6. Reach inside the product through the cartridge access door, and then manually move the carriage.
    • If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the product, move the carriage to the left side of the product.
    • If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the product, move the carriage to the right side of the product.
    • If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the product, move the carriage to the right side of the product.
  7. Remove any loose paper or obstructions found.
  8. Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the product by gently pushing the carriage to the left and then to the right.
  9. Close the front access door.

  10. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  11. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  12. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  13. Check the control panel to make sure that the lights are no longer blinking.

    The control panel overlay, or bezel, is not attached, or is incorrectly installed.

Solution one: Make sure that the control panel overlay is installed correctly

If the control panel overlay, or bezel, is incorrectly installed, the product may indicate a false carriage stall error condition. If the product has not been set up before, follow these steps to ensure correct installation of the control panel overlay.
If the control panel overlay is already installed, and your printer has been working for some time, do not attempt to reinstall the overlay. Press firmly on the overlay to ensure proper installation of the overlay adhesive or pins.
NOTE:If you have already installed the control panel overlay, proceed to the next solution.
  1. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  2. Locate the control panel overlay, and then peel off the paper backing to expose the adhesive as shown in the graphic below.

  3. Lift the scanner lid.
  4. Carefully line up and install the control panel overlay.

Solution one: Turn the All-in-One off and then on again

Follow these steps to turn the product off and then on again.
  1. Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
  2. Wait several seconds.
  3. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  4. Check the lights on the control panel to make sure that they are no longer blinking.
  5. Try the intended task again.

Solution two: Plug the All-in-One directly into a wall outlet

The power source your product is plugged into might not function properly. Follow these steps to plug your product directly into a wall outlet.
  1. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  2. Disconnect the product cord from any power strip or surge suppressor, and then plug it directly into a three-prong wall outlet.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  4. Press the Scan button () to try the scan job again.
  5. If the product does not scan, follow the same steps and try a different wall outlet.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Check for software and firmware updates

There might be software and/or firmware updates available that will help resolve this issue. The easiest way to check for updates is to use HP Update. However, if you did a custom install when you set up your computer, there is a chance that you did not install HP Update. Follow these steps to check for the applicable updates.
Step one: Check for software and firmware updates with HP Update
  1. Select your operating system, and then follow the steps to open HP Update. If you are not sure whether you have HP Update on your computer, you can check by following these steps to open HP Update:
      Click Start, click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
      Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
      Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
    The HP Update window opens, and the 'Checking for new updates' message displays in the window.
    • If HP Update is installed, follow the on-screen instructions to download and then install any relevant updates, and then continue to the last step to print a self-test page.
    • If HP Update is not installed, continue to the next step.
Step two: Check for software and firmware updates online
If you do not have HP Update on your computer, follow these steps to check online for software and/or firmware updates to help resolve your issue.
NOTE:If there are no online updates available, skip to the next solution.
  1. Open a new window to browse to the Get Software and Drivers page:
    Right-click this link, Get Software and Drivers , and then click Open in New Window.
  2. If prompted, type your product number, and then click Next. You might also need to click your model in a list of similar products.
  3. Select your operating system from the drop-down list, and then click Next.
  4. Click the Plus sign () next to Update and review the list of available updates.
  5. Click More Info, and then read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions () for complete download instructions.
  6. Click Download. This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
  7. Click Save, and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
  8. Click Save. The software downloads to your computer.
    Hint: Make a note of the place that you saved the file, in case you want to install it at a later time.
  9. Browse to where you saved the file, and then double-click the file to start the installation.
  10. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
