A 'Scanner Failure' Message Displays on the All-in-One Control Panel and You Cannot Scan, Copy, or Fax
When trying to scan, copy, or fax, one of the following error messages displays on the printer control panel:
- 'Scanner failure, power off and on '
- 'Scanner System Failure '
- 'Scanner failed, cannot make copies or fax '
- 'Scanner failure. Unable to scan, copy, or send a fax '
- 'Scanner failure, cycle power '
Additionally, the scanner mechanism bulb might not turn on when trying to scan, copy, or fax. There are two main causes for this issue:
- The scanner bulb temperature is too low.
- There is an internal or external electrical malfunction.
NOTE:This document addresses an issue with the scanner mechanism hardware . This issue is not related to a software issue or a USB or network connection issue when trying to scan items to your computer.
If you are having an issue when trying to scan, follow these steps to search for a document that addresses the issue you are experiencing.
- Scroll to the top of this Web page and find the HP Customer Care Product and Question or keywords search boxes.
- Type the name of your HP printer in the Product search box if it is not already there.
- In the Question or keywords search box, type the specific error message or issue you are experiencing when scanning, and then press Enter .
Try the following solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue. When one of the solutions resolves the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
Solution one: Reset the printer
Follow these steps to reset the printer.
- Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
- With the printer turned on , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait at least 15 seconds, and then plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- If the printer does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.
- Try to make a color copy.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Check the power connection
Follow these steps to troubleshoot the power connection.
- Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the printer.
- Unplug the printer power cord from any surge protector, extension cord, or power strip, and then connect the power cord directly to a wall outlet.
- Turn on the printer.
- Try to make a color copy.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting. The surge protector, extension cord, or power strip you were using does not allow enough voltage for the printer to work properly.
- If the issue persists , try connecting the printer power cord to a different wall outlet, and then try to make another color copy.
- If the printer still does not work properly when plugged into a different wall outlet , continue to the next section to service the printer.
Solution three: Service the printer
If you have completed all the preceding steps and are still experiencing a problem, service the product.
