Printing from an Apple Mobile Device

Introduction

If you want to print from an Apple iPhone or iPad to an HP ePrint-enabled printer, HP has a mobile printing solution to fit your needs. You can use HP ePrint, the HP ePrint mobile app, or Apple's AirPrint. This document provides steps to print with these mobile printing solutions.

If you have an ePrint-enabled printer, you might be asking which mobile printing solution is right for you. Go to What are the differences between mobile printing solutions to learn more.
No special software or additional app download is required to print with ePrint. But, before you proceed with these steps, you must enable Web Services and register your printer to get your ePrint email address.
If you have not already enabled Web Services and registered your printer with the ePrint service, follow these steps to find the document with these instructions for your printer.
  1. If prompted, enter your printer model in the search box, and then click Next.
  2. In the Question or keywords search box, type Getting Started with ePrint, and then press Enter to find the document.
  1. Make sure that your printer is turned on, connected to your local wireless network, and has access to the Internet.
  2. On your Apple device, find the document or photo that you want to print.
  3. Touch the Action icon () to display the menu options, and then touch Email photo, Email document, or other similar options. The photo or document opens in an email.
  4. Type or select your ePrint email address in the To: field.
  5. Tap Send to send the email. The print job prints to the main tray. If available, photos will automatically print from the dedicated photo paper tray.
Tips for printing photos with ePrint:

  • If your printer does not have a separate photo paper tray, make sure that photo paper is the only type of paper loaded in the main tray.
  • Make sure that photo email attachments are smaller than the 10 MB (megabyte) limit.
  • Make sure that photos have a high enough resolution, or dpi (dots per inch). Image files (like jpeg, bmp, tiff, etc.) must be 100 dpi or higher. Photos less than 100 dpi will not print.

If you are unable to print to an HP ePrint-enabled printer, follow these troubleshooting tips:
  • Make sure that the printer is turned on.
  • Wireless HP printers can take several minutes to join a Wi-Fi network after being turned on. Make sure that your printer is connected to the correct network before attempting to print.
  • Make sure that the printer has the latest firmware version installed.
  • Make sure that the printer has paper in the tray and enough ink or toner.
Follow these steps to check the status of sent ePrint print jobs.
These steps are for the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Germany.
  1. Go to HP Connected and log in to your account.
  2. Click the Collections tab to view your print history and the status of your ePrint jobs.
The following file types are supported by ePrint:
  • HTML files
  • Image files (.bmp, .gif, .jpg, .png, and .tiff)
  • Microsoft Excel (.xls and .xlsx)
  • Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt and .pptx)
  • Microsoft Word (.doc and .docx)
  • PDF files
  • Text files (.txt)
NOTE:There is a 10 MB memory limit to the size of the email. With all attachments, emails cannot exceed 10 MB in total size. Emails that exceed this limit will not print.
The HP ePrint mobile app supports all your mobile printing needs. You can easily print your digital content wirelessly to supported HP printers on a local Wi-Fi network. Also, if you registered your HP ePrint-enabled printer with ePrint you can print via the Cloud at home, the office, or on-the-go, whenever the printer is connected to the Internet. Additionally, you can print to thousands of HP ePrint Public Print Locations worldwide.
The HP ePrint mobile app is available for free in the Apple App Store or as an update to the HP ePrint Home & Biz app. Before you proceed with these steps, you must install and activate the app on your iPhone or iPad. Go to Getting Started with HP ePrint Mobile Apps for steps to install and activate the app.

Step one: Connect your Apple device to your local wireless network

Follow these steps to connect the Apple device to the network.
  1. On your Apple device, tap the Settings icon ().
  2. Tap Wi-Fi, and then tap the Wi-Fi toggle to On, if it is currently off. A list of wireless networks appears.

  3. Under Choose a Network, tap the name of your local wireless network.
  4. If prompted, enter your WPA passphrase or WEP key using the on-screen keypad, and then tap the Join button on the keypad. A checkmark () displays next to the Network Name to confirm that the Apple device is connected to the wireless network.
  5. Touch the Home button () on the Apple device to return to the home screen.
  6. Move your Apple device as close to the router as possible, but no closer than 1.8 meters (6 feet).

Step two: Print with the HP ePrint mobile app

Click one of the following types of print jobs for steps to print with HP ePrint mobile app.
  1. Make sure that your HP printer is turned on.
  2. On your Apple device, tap the HP ePrint mobile app icon.

  3. Tap Photos, and then tap Camera Roll, Photo Library, or the name of the photo album that you want to print from.
  4. Tap a photo to open the Preview screen.
  5. Use any of the following options to edit your photo. When you are done editing, tap the photo once to return to the Preview screen.
    • Resize the photo: Pinch open and pinch close to make the image larger or smaller. Note that the quality of a photo can be poorly affected if it is enlarged too much.
    • Reposition the photo: Drag the photo to position it on the preview page.
    • Rotate the photo: Place two fingers on the photo and move them to rotate the photo on the preview page.
    • Undo edits: Double-tap to undo any changes and scale the photo to fit the preview page.
  6. If your printer is selected, tap Print.
      If your printer is not automatically found or selected, follow these steps to select it.
      1. Tap the name of the currently selected printer to enter the Printers menu.
      2. Tap All to view the printers on your local wireless network and the available ePrint-enabled printers if you activated the app with ePrint.
      3. Tap your printer to select it.
      4. Tap Back to return to the Preview screen, and then tap Print.
Follow these steps to print a Web page with the HP ePrint mobile app.
NOTE: You must activate the ePrint mobile app with the ePrint service to print Web pages. Go to Getting Started with HP ePrint Mobile Apps for steps to activate the app with HP ePrint.
  1. Make sure that your HP printer is turned on.
  2. On your Apple device, tap the HP ePrint mobile app icon.

  3. Tap Web to open the ePrint mobile app Web browser.
  4. Tap the Web address field at the top of the screen, type the name of the website that you want to print a page from, and then tap Done. The website opens.
  5. Navigate to the Web page that you want to print, and then tap Print. The Preview screen displays.
  6. Tap the Settings icon () to change any of the following print settings.
    • Number of copies: Click the plus sign or minus sign to change the number of copies that you want to print.
    • Color or monochrome printing: Next to Color, select On to print the Web page in color, or select Off to print the page in black and white.
  7. Tap Preview to return to the Preview screen, and then tap Print.
Sending documents as email attachments is an easy way to transfer documents to your Apple device. Follow these steps to print a document attached in an email message with the HP ePrint mobile app.
  1. Make sure that your HP printer is turned on.
  2. From your email account on your computer, attach the document that you want to print to an email message, and then send it to your email address.
  3. On your Apple device, tap the HP ePrint mobile app icon.

  4. On the ePrint app home screen, tap Email.
  5. Tap your email account, tap Inbox, and then tap the email message with the attached document.
      If you have not added your email account to the ePrint mobile app yet, follow these steps to add the account.
      1. From the app home screen, tap the Settings icon ().
      2. Tap Email accounts, and then tap Add account.
      3. Tap your email service, and then enter your email address, domain (optional), username, and password.
      4. Tap Sign in.
  6. At the bottom of the message, tap the attachment to open it.
  7. Tap Print.
NOTE: You must activate the ePrint mobile app with the ePrint service to print Microsoft Office documents. Go to Getting Started with HP ePrint Mobile Apps for steps to activate the app with HP ePrint.
Many Apple and third-party document management apps support printing with the HP ePrint mobile app. Follow these steps to print a document from a supported app.
  1. Make sure that your HP printer is turned on.
  2. Launch the document management app on your Apple device.
  3. Tap the Action icon ( or ), and then tap Open in.
  4. Tap HP ePrint.
    NOTE: If HP ePrint is not an available action menu item, the app does not support printing with ePrint at this time.
  5. Tap Print.

The following sections list the file types supported by the HP ePrint mobile app. The file types that you can print depend on whether or not you have activated (registered) the app with the ePrint service.
If you activated the HP ePrint mobile app with the ePrint service, you can print the following file types:
  • Web pages
  • Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (Windows and Mac) documents, including those received as email attachments
  • Photos (.jpeg and .png)
  • PDFs, including those received as email attachments
  • Text (.txt) files, including those received as email attachments
If you did not activate the HP ePrint mobile app with the ePrint service, you can print the following file types:
  • Photos (.jpeg and .png)
  • PDFs, including those received as email attachments
  • Text (.txt) files, including those received as email attachments
To activate the app, go to Getting started with the HP ePrint mobile app .
  1. On the image, pinch or spread your fingers to adjust the size until it is inside or outside the crop box.
  2. Rotate two fingers on the image to position the picture as you desire.
  3. Tap Print to print the image.
  1. Open the image that you want to rotate.
  2. Place two fingers on the image, turn them to rotate the image, and then tap Print.
The HP ePrint mobile app supports plain and photo paper. For professional quality printing, use HP paper and HP photo paper.
Apple AirPrint lets you to print Web pages, emails, photos, and content from apps that support AirPrint. Print options might vary depending on the app that you are printing from and on the printer.
NOTE:Some iPhone and iPad apps might not offer a print option because they do not currently support AirPrint. If Print is not an available option, you cannot print from that particular app at this time.

Step one: Check AirPrint requirements

Before using Apple AirPrint, check the following requirements:
  • Your Apple device is running the iOS 4.2 or later.
  • Your printer is compatible with AirPrint. HP wireless printers released in 2010 or later support AirPrint.
  • Your printer and your Apple device are connected to the same local, private wireless 802.11 Wi-Fi network.
    NOTE:AirPrint does not support public wireless networks, such as public mobile hotspots. It does not support Bluetooth or cellular data connections, either 3G or 4G.

Step two: Select your printer

  1. In the app that you want to print from, tap the Action icon ( or ) to display the menu options.
  2. Tap Print. The Printer Options menu displays.
    NOTE:Some apps might not feature an Action icon, or the Print option might not display. If these options are not available, you cannot print from that particular app.
  3. On the Printer Options menu, tap Select Printer. A list of available printers on the network displays.

  4. Tap your printer in the drop-down menu. The Printer Options menu displays again and shows your selected printer.

  • If you do not need to change print options, tap Print to send the print job.
  • If you need to change print options, continue to the next step.

Step three: Change print options

The following print options might display, depending on the app and the printer, after tapping Print and then selecting your printer. Follow the steps to change the print settings.
In the Printer Options menu, tap the Plus sign () or the Minus sign () next to Copy as needed to select the number of copies.

In the Printer Options menu next to Double-sided, tap On to enable two-sided printing, or tap Off to disable two-sided printing.
NOTE:If the HP printer does not support two-sided printing, the Double-sided option does not display.

If you are printing a file type, such as a PDF, that has multiple pages, tap Range in the Printer Options menu, and then tap All Pages or select the page range that you want to print.
NOTE:Range will only display with certain apps and file types, such as PDFs.

If you try to print from your Apple device with Apple AirPrint, and you receive a 'No AirPrint Printers Found' message, follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.
Solution one: Restart all devices and check network connections
Follow these steps to restart the router, Apple device, and HP printer, and then check the network connections.
Step one: Turn the router, the Apple device, and the HP printer off
Follow these steps to turn the router, Apple device, and the printer off.
  1. Turn off the router. Check with the router manufacturer for instructions on how to turn off the router.
    NOTE:Do not reset the router.
  2. Press the Power button to turn off the HP printer.
  3. Turn off the Apple device.
Step two: Turn the router and the printer back on
  1. Turn on the router, and then wait 30 seconds to let it complete its start-up process.
  2. Turn on the printer. Wait until the initialization process completes.
    NOTE:Do not turn on the Apple device yet.
Step three: Make sure that the printer is on the network
Follow these steps to make sure that the HP printer is on the network.
  1. From the printer control panel, print a Network Configuration Report. Consult your manual for steps if you are unsure how to print this report.
  2. Check the Active Connection Type in the General Information section on the report. The connection type should be Wireless.
  3. Check the status in the 802.11 Wireless section on the report. The status should be Connected. The printer IP Address also displays in the 802.11 section of the report for active wireless connections.
  4. Make sure that the Network Name (SSID) on the report is the same as the name of the wireless network for your networked printer.
    • If the HP printer is connected to the correct wireless network, continue to the next step.
    • If the HP printer is not connected to the correct wireless network, go to HP Customer Care , type your product number in the search field, and then browse for the support document on connecting your printer to a wireless network.
Step four: Turn on the Apple device and check the network connection
Follow these steps to connect the Apple device to the network.
  1. Turn your Apple device back on.
  2. Tap the Settings icon ().
  3. Tap Wi-Fi.
  4. Make sure that Wi-Fi is set to On, and that there is a checkmark next to your wireless network name.
  5. Move your Apple device as close to the router as possible, but no closer than 6 ft (1.8 m).
  6. Return to the Settings menu, tap General, and then make sure that Bluetooth is set to Off.
  7. Try to print.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Update the printer and the Apple device
Follow these steps to update the printer firmware, and then update your Apple device to the most current version of the iOS mobile operating system.
Step one: Update the printer firmware
Choose one of the following methods to check for and install updates for your HP printer.
Method one: Get firmware updates from the printer control panel
If the product connects to a network with internet access, you can update the firmware through the front panel. In most cases, the firmware will automatically update as necessary. In order for this to occur, you must enable web services.
Follow these steps to activate HP Web-connected printing services, and to update the firmware.
  1. On the product control panel, touch Apps, Web Services, or ePrint, depending on your product model.
  2. If prompted to enable Web services, touch Yes, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. If prompted to update the product, touch Yes, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
Method two: Download the firmware from the HP website
  1. If the Welcome to HP Support page opens, follow these steps:
    1. Type your printer model number.
    2. Click Go.
      You might need to select your printer model number from a list of similar printer models.
  2. Select your operating system, and then click Next.
    A list of drivers and other downloads display.
  3. Scroll down the page, and then click Firmware.
  4. Click Download, and then follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the firmware.
Step two: Upgrade the Apple device to the most current version of iOS
  1. Turn on your Apple device.
  2. Tap the Settings icon ().
  3. Tap General, and then tap Software Updates.
  4. If an update is available, tap Download, and then tap Install or Install Now.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.
Solution three: Make sure that your router can forward Bonjour packets, and then restart the Apple device
Follow these steps to make sure that your router can forward Bonjour packets, and then turn the Apple device off and on.
Step one: Make sure that your router can forward Bonjour packets
Not all wireless routers support Bonjour
Bonjour is a technology that is built into Mac OS and iOS. This technology discovers devices such as printers that are installed on the same network as a Mac or Apple mobile device. Bonjour is the default method for discovering devices on a network.
or all of Bonjour's features. Since Bonjour is the default method for discovering printers on a network, you must first make sure that your wireless router supports Bonjour.
Check the specifications or support documentation for your router, or contact the router manufacturer, to make sure that your router supports Bonjour. It must also support forwarding Bonjour packets.
  • If your router supports Bonjour, continue to the next solution in this document.
  • If your router does not support Bonjour, contact the router manufacturer for options. Alternatively, you can work around the issue by adding the printer with the printer IP address.
Step two: Restart the Apple device
Follow these steps to power off the Apple device, and then turn it back on again.
  1. Hold your Apple device vertically with the Home button () at the bottom of the device.
  2. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button () on the top of your Apple device for a few seconds until a red slider displays.
  3. Slide the slider to the right to turn off your device.
  4. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button () on the top of your Apple device until the Apple logo displays to turn on the device.
  5. Try to print from your Apple device.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.
Solution four: Try printing from another device or computer, and reset the printer
Follow these steps to try printing from another device on the same network as the HP printer, and then reset the printer.
Step one: Try to print from another device or computer
Try to print from another networked device to the HP printer. Examples of networked devices include your computer and another Apple device.
Step two: Reset the HP printer
  1. Press the Power button or switch to turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
  2. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  4. Wait at least 15 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  7. If the printer does not turn on by itself, press the Power button or switch to turn it on.
  8. Try to print from your mobile device.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.
Solution five: Update your router with the most recent firmware, and then try to print
Check with the manufacturer of your router for an available firmware update, and for instructions on how to install it.
Once you have successfully updated the firmware, try to print with Apple AirPrint.

AirPrint supports the following paper and photo paper sizes.
NOTE:Different paper and media sizes might display depending on the app you are printing from and on the printer.
  • Letter
  • Legal
  • A4
  • 4 x 6 inch photo media
  • A6 photo media
With AirPrint, you do not have the option to select different paper sizes. Paper and media sizes are automatically selected depending on the app you are printing from, your printer, and the region in which you are using AirPrint.
For example, from Apple’s Photo application, if your printer has a separate photo paper tray, AirPrint uses 4 x 6 inch photo media as the default paper size. If the printer does not have a separate photo paper tray, AirPrint uses letter-size paper. If you are printing from Apple’s Safari web browser, letter-size paper is the default paper size in the US region, and A4 is the default paper size in Europe.
While a print job is being sent to the printer, Print Center will display in the recently used apps list. After the print job is finished, Print Center will not be available.
To display the list of recently used apps, press the Home button () twice on the Apple device. Print Center displays at the bottom of the Home screen.
NOTE:Print Center is strictly a status monitor for print jobs, and will only display while a print job is being sent to the product.

Apple AirPrint supports printing Web pages, emails, and photos.
Choose one of the following methods to cancel an AirPrint job.
  • From the printer control panel: Press the Cancel button () to cancel the print job.
  • From the Apple device: Press the Home button () twice, tap the Print Center icon at the bottom of the screen, and then tap Cancel Printing in the Print Summary menu.
