Issue

A cartridge alignment page prints every time you turn on or turn off the product, or start a print job.
To ensure the highest-quality prints, the product performs a semi-automatic alignment process each time you install or replace the cartridges. The product prints an alignment page during this alignment process. To complete the process, you must place the alignment page on the scanner glass and scan the page. If you do not scan the alignment page, the product continues to print an alignment page every time that you turn on or turn off the product until you complete the full alignment process.
Try the following solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue. When one of the solutions resolves the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

Solution one: Complete the alignment process

Follow these steps to complete the alignment process.
  1. Make sure that the alignment page prints on unused, bright white paper.
NOTE: If you need to create a new alignment page, load the tray with unused, letter or A4 size, bright white paper, turn off the product, and then turn on the product again. The product automatically prints a new alignment page.
  2. Lift the scanner lid.
  3. Place the top of the alignment page face down in the left front corner of the glass.
Figure 1: Place the alignment page face down
Illustration: Place the alignment page face down
  4. Close the scanner lid.
  5. Press the Scan button.
The On/Resume light blinks during the alignment process.
  6. After the On/Resume light stops blinking, the alignment is complete.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Remove, inspect, and reseat the cartridges

Follow these steps to remove, inspect, and reseat the cartridges.
  1. If the On/Resume button is not lit, press the On/Resume button to turn on the product.

  6. Use your thumb to press down on one of the cartridges to release it, and then pull the cartridge toward you and out of its slot.
CAUTION:Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or nozzles. If you touch these parts, it might result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.
  7. Inspect the cartridge:
    • Check the electrical contacts for debris.
    • Make sure no protective tape remains over the nozzles.

  9. Close the cartridge access door. The product prints an alignment page.
IMPORTANT: Scan the alignment page to complete the alignment process.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Clean the electrical contacts

Follow these steps to clean the electrical contacts.
  1. Gather the following items:
    • Clean, distilled water. Use bottled water if you cannot use distilled water.
CAUTION:Do not use tap water. Tap water might contain contaminants that might damage the cartridge.
    • Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that does not stick to the cartridges (coffee filters work well).
    • Clean sheets of paper or paper towels on which to rest the cartridge while cleaning.
  2. Lower the cartridge access door until it stops.

  4. Use your thumb to press down on one of the cartridges to release it, and then pull the cartridge toward you and out of its slot.
CAUTION:Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or nozzles. If you touch these parts, it might result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.
  5. Place the cartridge on a clean sheet of paper with the cartridge nozzles facing up.
  6. Disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet.
  7. Clean the cartridge contacts.
    1. Dip a swab in the distilled or bottled water, and then squeeze the excess water from it.
    2. Hold the cartridge by its sides, and then clean the copper-colored contacts only. Do not touch or clean the nozzles.

    3. Set the cartridge on a clean sheet of paper with the cartridge nozzles facing up.
  8. Clean the electrical contacts inside the product.
    1. Dip a fresh swab in the distilled or bottled water, and then squeeze the excess water from it.
    2. Clean the electrical contacts inside the product with the fresh swab.

    3. Allow ten minutes for the contacts to dry, and then reinstall the cartridges.
  9. Close the cartridge access door, and then reconnect the power cord.
  10. Press the On/Resume button to turn on the product. The product automatically prints an alignment page.
IMPORTANT: Scan the alignment page to complete the alignment process.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Install new cartridges

Follow these steps to install new HP cartridges.
NOTE: If you remove and install the same cartridge, the product does not align the cartridges. The product remembers the alignment values for each cartridge.
  1. Remove the new cartridge from its package.
  2. Use the pull tab to gently remove the plastic tape.
    Figure 13: Remove the tape
    Illustration: Remove the tape
    1 - Copper-colored contacts
2 - Plastic tape with pink pull tab (must be removed before installing)
3 - Nozzles under the tape
CAUTION:Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or nozzles. If you touch these parts, it might result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.
  3. Slide the new cartridge forward at a slight upward angle into the empty slot. Use your index finger to push the cartridge forward until it clicks into place.
    Figure 14: Insert the cartridge
    Illustration: Insert the cartridge
  4. Close the cartridge access door. The product prints an alignment page.
IMPORTANT: Scan the alignment page to complete the alignment process.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution five: Reset and relocate the product

A power reset drains power from the product and returns the product to the same settings after restarting. To eliminate any potential power deficiencies that might hinder a successful alignment, HP suggests you move the product to another location and plug the product directly into a wall outlet. Follow these steps to reset and relocate the product.
  1. Press the On/Resume button to turn on the product.
  2. With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
  3. Relocate the printer to a different power outlet, preferably an outlet in a different room.
  4. Plug the power cord directly into the wall outlet. Do not use a power strip, extension cord, or surge protector.
CAUTION:Do not reconnect the power cord to the back of the product at this time.
  5. Load letter or A4 size unused, plain white paper in the tray.
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the back of the product.

Solution six: Service the product

If you have completed all the preceding steps and are still experiencing a problem, service the product.
Determine if your product is in warranty or out of warranty. If you need help determining your product’s warranty status, go to HP’s Warranty Check Tool .
  • If your product is in warranty , contact HP.
  • If your product is out of warranty , fees might apply for contacting HP.

Cause

This issue occurs most often when all of the alignment steps are not completed, particularly the step to scan the alignment sheet. The product does not align the cartridges without completion of this step.
To avoid this issue:
  • Complete all of the alignment steps.
  • Print the alignment sheet on plain, bright white paper only so that the product can correctly read the scanned alignment page.
  • Do not use remanufactured or refilled cartridges. Refilled or remanufactured cartridges might be damaged during the refilling process or have clogged ink nozzles.
  • Replace empty or damaged cartridges. Complete all of the alignment steps after you replace any cartridges.
