Back HP Customer Care
Mobile Battery Pack Replacement Program
Description
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, on October 14, 2005, HP announced a worldwide voluntary recall and replacement program for battery packs used in certain HP notebooks. HP customers affected by this program will be eligible to receive a replacement battery pack for each verified, affected, recalled battery pack, at no cost.
The computer industry has recently experienced battery pack recalls by other computer manufacturers. However, HP believes that this current battery pack recall is unrelated to any of those recalls.
HP and the battery pack cell manufacturer identified a defect in assembled battery packs manufactured between March 2004 and September 2004. HP considers the defect to pose a potential safety hazard to customers.
An internal short can cause the battery cells to overheat and melt or char the plastic case, posing a burn and fire hazard.

  3. If the notebook model is listed above turn off the notebook.
  4. Disconnect the AC adapter from the notebook.
  5. Remove the battery pack from the notebook. For assistance refer to the user guide supplied with the notebook.
Figure : The battery packs can be identified by a bar-code label attached to the battery pack. See the following illustrations of the affected batteries.
The affected battery packs can be identified by a bar-code label attached to the battery (label location shown in the following illustrations). If the bar-code number starts with GC , IA , L0 , or L1 , and the battery pack is identified through the program Web site at http://www.hp.com/support/BatteryReplacement as being part of the replacement program, the customer should replace it immediately through the process identified on the Web site.
Resolution
Based on the nature of this issue, HP is requesting that customers immediately discontinue use of the subject battery packs by discharging the battery pack, removing it from the notebook, and ordering a replacement battery pack.
NOTE:
The notebook will function using AC power without a battery pack installed in the notebook.
Battery Pack Discharge Instructions
HP’s major concern is for the safety of the customer. To minimize the probability of battery pack failure, we strongly recommend that the affected battery pack be discharged immediately and not used further.
CAUTION:
All data must be saved and all active programs closed before discharging the battery pack. When the battery pack is discharged, any unsaved data may be lost when the notebook shuts down.
Discharge the battery pack using the following instructions:
  1. Disconnect the notebook from its external power source, but do not turn off the notebook.
  2. Run the notebook on battery power until the battery pack is fully discharged. When the battery pack is fully discharged, the battery light is turned off and the notebook shuts down.
  3. Remove the battery pack from the notebook.
