Mac OS X: How Do I Find Which Mac OS X Version Is on My Computer?

Learn how to find the Mac OS X version and build number on your computer. This information is helpful when you update the software or the operating system.
Finding your Mac OS X version number
To find the Mac OS X version number, click the Apple () icon, and then click About This Mac. The About This Mac window opens, and displays the OS X version number.

In the example, the version is 10.7 (OS X Lion).
Finding your Mac OS X build number
Follow these steps to view the build number for your Mac.
  1. Click the Apple () icon, and then click About This Mac. The About This Mac window opens.
  2. Click the word ' Version' to toggle through the version, build, and serial number information for your Mac.

NOTE:
You can also access the OS X version and build number from the System Information dialog box. In the About This Mac window, click More Info to open the System Information dialog box.
