Using Recovery Manager to Restore Software and Drivers (Windows 8)

This document pertains to HP and Compaq PCs that came with Windows 8 installed.
This document explains how to reinstall software programs and hardware drivers that were originally installed on the computer at the factory.
NOTE:If your computer was configured to order, you might need to reinstall certain software programs using the specific software installation discs that came with your computer.
Use the information in one of the following sections to help reinstall software or drivers, depending on whether you have a notebook or a desktop computer.

Reinstalling software on HP notebook computers with Windows 8

Use the following steps to reinstall factory installed applications and drivers on computers manufactured with Windows 8.
On HP notebook computers manufactured with Windows 8, drivers and applications are restored from the same screen in Recovery Manager.
  1. From the Start screen, type recovery to open the Search charm, and then select Recovery Manager from the search results.
    If prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. If prompted by User Account Control to allow the program to make changes to the computer, click Yes.
  2. Under I need help immediately, click Drivers and Applications Reinstall and wait for Recovery Manager to generate a list.

  3. Select the checkbox next to the drivers you want to reinstall, and then scroll down to the list of applications.

  4. Select the checkbox next to the applications you want to reinstall, and then click the Install button.
    NOTE: Some PCs might not have software applications to install and an applications section might not be available. This is normal and software should be installed from HP's web site or the web site of the software developer.

  5. When the Installation is completed message appears, click the OK button.

  6. Close all open applications, and then restart the computer.

Reinstalling software on HP desktop and All-in-One computers running Windows 8

Follow the steps in one of the sections below, depending on whether you want to reinstall software or drivers on your HP desktop computer manufactured with Windows 8.
Use the following steps to reinstall factory-installed software programs on desktop computers manufactured with Windows 8:
  1. From the Start screen, type recovery to open the Search charm, and then select Recovery Manager from the search results.
    If prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. If prompted by User Account Control to allow the program to make changes to the computer, click Yes.
  2. Under I need help immediately, click Software Program Reinstallation.

  3. On the Software Program Reinstallation welcome screen, click Next.

  4. Look in the Factory installed programs list for the software program you want to reinstall, and then click Next.
    If the program you want to reinstall is not listed, select the checkbox next to The program is not in the list, and then click Next. Follow the onscreen instructions to reinstall the program.

  5. On the Reinstallation progress window, if no message appears prompting you to uninstall the application, click Next.
    If prompted to uninstall the application before reinstalling, follow the steps below, return to the Reinstallation progress window, and then click Next:
    Press the Windows + X keys.
    Select Programs and Features from the menu.
    Under Programs and Features, select the program you want to remove from the list, and then click Uninstall or Uninstall/Change at the top of the program list.
    Read and respond to any messages that may open while the software is being removed from your computer.

  6. Wait while Recovery Manager reinstalls the program.

  7. When the reinstallation is complete, select the radio button next to Yes to restart the computer immediately, or No if you want to restart later, and then click Finish.

Use the following steps to reinstall factory installed hardware drivers on desktop computers manufactured with Windows 8:
  1. From the Start screen, type recovery to open the Search charm, and then select Recovery Manager from the search results.
    If prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. If prompted by User Account Control to allow the program to make changes to the computer, click Yes.
  2. Under I need help immediately, click Hardware Driver Reinstallation.

  3. On the Hardware Driver Reinstallation welcome screen, click Next.

  4. Select the driver you want to reinstall from the list of factory installed drivers, and then click Next.
    If the driver you want to reinstall is not listed, select the checkbox next to The driver is not in the list, and then click Next. Follow the onscreen instructions.

  5. After the driver installation is complete, click Finish to restart the computer.
