Find 32-bit or 64-bit system type if your computer does not start
If your computer does not start, you can find the 32-bit or 64-bit system type that your computer originally came with from the product packaging. You can also find the system type on the web from a product specification document. For HP and Compaq PCs, use the following steps to find your support specification on the web:
  1. In the Search field (or Questions or keywords field) at the top of this page, type your computer model number, a space, and the word "specification".
For example, if you owned a TouchSmart 600-1055 computer, you would type: 600-1055 specification
  2. Click the link on the search results page that matches the Product Specifications for your computer model. A product specification support document opens.
  3. Scroll down to the software section to find the operating system version and system type.
The type should be listed with name of the operating system; for example: Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit). If 32-bit or 64-bit is not listed next to the name of the operating system, the system type is 32-bit.
