Maintenance and Cleaning

ISSUE:
What should I do to clean and maintain my HP Officejet G Series?
SOLUTION:
See the information below.
General
The HP Officejet G Series product is designed to print up to 5000 pages per month. Proper maintenance and cleaning may extend the life of the HP Officejet G Series and keep it performing like new. Follow the procedures listed below approximately once every six months depending on usage and environment. Clean the HP Officejet G Series more often in high use situations or if it is in a dirty environment.
WARNING: Before following any of the cleaning procedures, unplug the power cord.
CAUTION: Cleaning fluid should never be sprayed directly into the unit. Any time a cleaning solution is used, the part should be thoroughly dry before continuing.
Exterior
Use a soft cloth moistened with water to wipe the exterior case, keypad and control panel. A mild detergent may be used for more stubborn stains.
NOTE: Purified or distilled water is recommended.
Components
Scanner glass
Dirty glass (fingerprints, smudges, a hair, and so on) slows down performance by as much as half a minute and affects the accuracy of special features such as Fit to Page and Clone. This is because the unit is actually processing the smudges on the glass.
  1. Turn off the unit, unplug the power cord, and raise the lid.
  2. Clean the glass using a soft, lint-free cloth lightly moistened with a non-abrasive glass cleaner.
The document lid backing
Minor debris can also accumulate on the white document backing located underneath the unit's lid. Keep this backing clean so that it does not slow down performance or affect the accuracy of special features such as Fit to Page and Clone. Do not use paper-based wipes as these may scratch the backing.
  1. Turn off the unit, unplug the power cord, and raise the lid.
  2. Wipe the white document backing using a soft, lint-free cloth lightly moistened with a non-abrasive glass cleaner. Clean gently to loosen debris; do not scrub the backing.
  3. Dry the backing with a chamois or soft cloth.
Print a self-test report
The self-test report indicates whether the unit is operating properly. This report can only be generated from the front panel. To do this using the front panel:
  1. Press Menu.
  2. Choose one of the following:
    • For models G55 or G55xi, press 2, and then press 2 again.
    • For models G85, G85xi, or G95, press 3, and then press 5.
The unit prints a report, which contains the following:
  • Product information: This information is necessary when calling HP Customer Care for assistance.
  • Print-cartridge test patterns: The left patterns are for the black cartridge; the right patterns are for the color cartridge. If there are gaps in the lines, clean the print cartridges (for more information, see "Clean the print cartridges").
  • Print-cartridge fill patterns: If any of the lines are not solid (that is, they contain gaps or streaks), one of the cartridges may be low on ink. Replace the appropriate cartridge, and perform another self-test.
  • Margin indicators: The lines on each side, the top, and the bottom of the page show the print margins.
Clean the print cartridges
The print cartridges have microscopic nozzles that can clog when exposed to the air for more than a few minutes. The unit is designed to prevent nozzles from drying out when it is idle and when it is turned off using the ON button located on the front panel. A print cartridge that is not used for long periods of time can also clog, resulting in a noticeable decrease in print quality.
Clean the ink cartridges when the Self-Test Report shows streaking or white lines through any of the colored bars. Do not clean cartridges unnecessarily. This wastes ink and shortens the life of your print cartridges.
If copy or print quality still seems poor after cleaning the cartridges, replace the cartridge that is affected.
To print the Cleaning Page using the front panel:
  1. Press Menu.
  2. For models G55 or G55xi, press 3, and then press 1. For models G85, G85xi, or G95, press 7, and then press 1.
A page prints to confirm cleaning. You can either discard or recycle this page.
To print this Cleaning Page using the PC:
  1. In the Director, click Settings, and then choose Maintenance.
  2. Click Clean print cartridges.
  3. After you are finished, click Close.
On the Macintosh cleaning the cartridges is supported using the front panel only.

Paper rollers
The three large paper rollers are located inside the machine and are accessed via the rear access door or by removing the HP Two-Sided Print accessory if the unit is equipped with one. These rollers should be cleaned only when the unit is having problems feeding paper into the HP Officejet G Series. To clean the paper rollers follow the steps below in order.
  1. Turn off the HP Officejet G Series and unplug power cord from the power source.
  2. Unlock and remove the rear access door or remove the HP Two-Sided Printing Accessory.
  3. Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water to clean the paper rollers. Rotate the rollers gently to clean the entire surface.
NOTE: Purified or distilled water is recommended.
  4. Let the rollers dry.
  5. Close and lock the rear access door or reinstall the Two Sided Printing Accessory.
  6. Plug the HP Officejet power cord back into the power source.
Document rollers
Models equipped with an automatic document feeder should clean the document rollers. The document rollers feed the original document from the document tray onto the scanner glass. These rollers should be cleaned only when the unit is having problems feeding paper into the HP Officejet G Series. To clean the document rollers:
  1. Turn off the unit and unplug the HP Officejet G Series power cord from the power source.
  2. Lift up the top cover to expose the scanner glass.
  3. Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water to clean the document rollers. The rollers are located on the underside of the top cover.
NOTE: Purified or distilled water is recommended.
  4. Let the rollers dry.
  5. Close the top cover.
  6. Plug the HP Officejet power cord back into the power source.
HP Two-Sided Printing accessory
The rollers and outside of the HP Two-Sided Printing accessory should be cleaned.
  1. Turn off the HP Officejet G Series and unplug the power cord.
  2. Use a soft cloth moistened with water to wipe any dust or debris from the outside of the HP Two-Sided Printing accessory.
  3. Remove the HP Two-Sided Printing accessory.
  4. Press the button on the top of the accessory to open it.
  5. Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water to clean the six paper feed rollers.
  6. Let the rollers dry.
  7. Close the accessory cover and make sure it is fully closed.
  8. Reinstall the HP Two-Sided Printing accessory. Make sure that it is securely snapped back into place, otherwise skewed pages may occur.
  9. Plug the HP Officejet power cord back into the power source.
NOTE: Purified or distilled water is recommended.
