Setup Instructions

1. Make Sure Everything is in the Box

  1. HP Printer/Scanner/Copier
  2. Paper/document loading tray
  3. Power cord
  4. Bidirectional parallel cable
  5. HP Printer/Scanner/Copier software on CD-ROM
  6. Adobe PhotoDeluxe (TM) software on CD-ROM
  7. Black and color print cartridges
  8. User’s Guide
  9. Photo Projects for the Entire Family book
  10. Ready, Setup, Go Guide
  11. Scan/copy sleeves (for copying and scanning photos and small documents)

2. Install the Paper/Document Tray

Before you start:
  1. Remove the orange tape from the paper/document tray.
  2. Hold the sides of the tray.
  3. Insert the bottom tabs into the guides.

3. Connect the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier to Your PC

Important: Be sure to use the enclosed bidirectional parallel cable to connect the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier to your PC. For safety, turn off the PC before connecting the cable.
  1. Connect the cable firmly to the cable port on the back of the HP Printer/ Scanner/Copier. Snap both metal clips into the notches on the connector.
  2. Plug the other end of the cable into the parallel (LPT1) port on the back of your PC.
    NOTE:Do not use the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier with a switchbox or any other device that shares the printer port.

4. Connect the Power Cord

  1. Plug the power cord firmly into the power socket on the back of your HP Printer/ Scanner/Copier.
  2. Plug the other end of the power cord into a grounded electrical outlet.
  3. WARNING: To avoid the possibility of electric shock, make sure the outlet is grounded. If you are using a power strip, make sure it is turned on. The HP Printer/Scanner/Copier will automatically turn on.

5. Insert the Print Cartridges

  1. After the HP Printer/Scanner/ Copier finishes start-up (about 10 seconds), open the cover. The empty print cartridge holder moves into view.
  2. Remove the color print cartridge from its packaging. Hold the top of the cartridge and gently remove the tape. Important: Be careful not to touch the copper contacts or the ink nozzles on the bottom of the cartridge.
  3. Place the color print cartridge into the cartridge holder on the right. Slide in the bottom of the cartridge until it snaps into place, then push the top forward until it snaps into place.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3, placing the black print cartridge into the cartridge holder on the left.
  5. Close the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier cover.

6. Load the Paper

  1. Pull up the paper extension on the top of the paper supply tray.
  2. Pull the document loading tray completely forward.
  3. Load at least 20 sheets of paper into the paper supply tray. The paper fits behind the stack guides. Load sheets with the print side facing the front of the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier. If necessary, adjust the paper guides by pinching and sliding them. Tip: After placing the paper into the paper supply tray, tap the end of the stack to make sure it is settled into the tray.
  4. Push the document loading tray back into position.

7. Install the Software

If you do not have a CD-ROM drive, call 1-888-HPDISKS (1-888-473-4757) to receive the software on 3.5-inch diskettes by overnight mail.
NOTE: As part of the installation, you are prompted to install OmniPage Limited Edition 5.0. OmniPage uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to convert a scanned document into text you can edit with your word processor.

Windows 95 or Windows 98

  1. Turn on your PC. (If you did not turn off your PC in Step 3, restart it now.)
  2. If the New Hardware Found or Update Device Driver Wizard message displays, click Cancel. Insert the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier CD into the CD-ROM drive. The Welcome screen displays (this may take a moment). Continue to step 3. If the Welcome screen does not display: From the Windows Start menu, choose Run, then type d:\setup.exe where "d:" represents the letter of the CD-ROM drive. Click OK. Continue to step 3.
  3. At the Welcome screen, click Install the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier software on your PC. If you are using a notebook PC or will disconnect the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier often, click Install the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier software on your notebook PC. Follow the instructions on the screen.
    NOTE: If you install using the Notebook PC method, the Printer/Scanner/Copier software does not load into your Startup Group.
  4. Insert the Adobe PhotoDeluxe CD into the CD-ROM drive. From the Windows Start menu, choose Run. Click Browse, select your CD-ROM drive, and then select Install.exe. Click OK to close the Browse dialog box, then click OK to close the Run dialog box. After the software is done installing, you must click Install Required Fonts and ATM to complete the installation and have full functionality in the PhotoDeluxe software.
    NOTE: When you install Adobe PhotoDeluxe, the Create button is added to the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier Manager Software, allowing you to quickly scan images into creative projects.

Windows 3.x

  1. Turn on your PC. (If you did not turn off your PC in Step 3, restart it now.)
  2. Insert the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier CD into the CD-ROM drive. Choose Run from the File menu in the Program Manager, then type d:\setup.exe where "d:" represents the letter of the CD-ROM drive. Click OK.
  3. At the Welcome screen, click Install the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier software on your PC.

8. Align the Print Cartridges

Any time you change the print cartridges (or put in new ones), do an alignment to make sure they are set up properly.
  1. Start the HP Printer/Scanner/Copier Manager.
    Windows 95/98: Double-click the desktop icon.
    Windows 3.x: Click the desktop icon and choose Start HP Printer/Scanner/Copier Manager.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Choose Settings and Maintenance.
  4. Select the Maintenance tab.
  5. Click Align Print Cartridge.
  6. Click Align.
  7. Follow the instructions on the screen.
