Slow Printing

Issue

Print jobs are very slow. This document contains general guidance. You may be able to find more product specific information on the HP website.

Cause

There are seven common causes of slow printing from Microsoft Windows:
  • An incorrect printer driver is selected.
  • The HP Colorsmart driver is set to Best and Glossy or Transparency paper.
  • The system resources are being used by other applications.
  • The computer system is running at the minimum requirements.
  • Bidirectional communication is interfering with the printer operation.
  • Excessive temporary files are using up the system resources.
  • A large number of fonts are installed.

Solution one: Hard reset the printer

  1. Turn the power off. Remove the power cable and the data cable from the unit.
  2. Connect the power cable directly to a wall outlet.
  3. Reconnect the power cable to the unit and turn the power on.
  4. Print a self-test.
  5. If slow printing is still an issue, proceed to the next solution.

Solution two: Ensure the correct printer driver is installed and set as default

Verify that the correct printer driver is installed and set as the default printer. If slow printing is still an issue, proceed to the next solution.

Solution three: Verify the driver settings for Print Quality and Paper Type are correct

Windows 95, 98, and Me

  1. Select Start , Settings , and Printers .
  2. Right-click the HP Deskjet icon and select Properties .
  3. Verify Paper Type is set to Plain Paper .
  4. Select the Setup tab and verify Print Quality is set to Normal or EconoFast .
  5. If any changes were made, try printing again. If slow printing is still an issue, continue to the next solution.
    NOTE: The size and complexity of the documents that you print can make a difference in your printer's performance. Graphics are usually more complex and print more slowly than a file that contains only text. Setting the Print Quality to Econofast can improve print speed; however, EconoFast produces the lowest image quality.

Windows XP

  1. Click Start , click Control Panel , and then click Printers and Other Hardware .
  2. Click View installed printers or fax products .
  3. Click Printing Preferences .
  4. Click the Paper Quality tab
  5. In the Quality Settings, select Normal or Draft .
  6. Try printing again.

Solution four: Turn off all programs

Verify that no software programs are running.

Windows 95, 98, and Me

  1. Close all running applications and try printing again. Use the steps below to close the running applications.
    1. On the keyboard, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to retrieve the Close Program window.
    2. Highlight any program in the list (except Explorer and Systray) and click EndTask .
    3. Repeat Steps a and b until all programs (except Explorer and Systray) are closed.
    4. Once the list shows only Explorer and Systray, click Cancel to close the Close Program window.
  2. Try to print again. If the print speed has not improved, perform Steps 3 through 5.
  3. Disable any applications that are loaded with Windows from the LOAD= and RUN= lines in the WIN.INI file.
    1. Select Start and Run .
    2. Type SYSEDIT in the Open box and click OK . Select the title bar that reads C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI to bring that window to the front.
    3. In the [windows] section, locate the load= and the run= lines. If there are any statements in these lines, place a semicolon (;) at the beginning of each line. The lines should now read ;load= and ;run=.
    4. Select File and Exit . Click Yes to save the changes.
  4. Move all icons out of the StartUp program group.
    1. Right-click Start and select Open . Open Programs and StartUp .
    2. Move (drag and drop) each icon located in the StartUp window to the Desktop. Once all the StartUp icons are on the Desktop, close the open windows.
  5. Restart Windows and try printing again. If slow printing is still an issue, continue to the next solution.

Windows XP

  1. While holding down the CTRL and ALT keys on the keyboard, press the DELETE key.
    The Windows Task Manager appears showing a list of all running programs.
  2. Select a software application from the list and click End Task to forcibly close the software.
  3. Continue closing software applications until done.
  4. Click the Processes tab.
  5. Select the process (task) you want to close and click End Process .
  6. If another window appears stating the task has stopped responding, click End Task .
  7. Continue ending processes (tasks) except for Explorer.
  8. Try printing again. If slow printing is still an issue, continue to the next solution.

Solution five: Verify that your computer meets the minimum system requirements

System resources that have a significant effect on print speed are the following:
  • The processor used by the computer
  • The amount of available random-access memory (RAM)
  • The amount of free disk space
Using a computer system with a faster processor, more RAM, and more than the recommended amount of free disk space will provide better performance than a system that only meets the minimum system requirements.
The minimum system requirements for your printer are listed on the box your printer came in. The minimum system requirements to use your printer can also be found on your printer's web page. If your computer meets the minimum system requirements, continue to the next solution.

Solution six: Validate that bidirectional communication is not interfering with the printer operation

Try the following steps:

Windows 95, 98, and Me

  1. Select Start , Settings , and Printers .
  2. Right-click the HP Deskjet printer icon and select Properties , Details , and Port Settings .
  3. Remove the checkmarks next to Spool MS-DOS® Print Jobs and Check Port State Before Printing and click OK .
    NOTE: If DOS applications are being used with an HP Deskjet 720c, 820c, or 1000c series printer, the option Spool MS-DOS Print Jobs must remain checked in order to allow the DOS applications to print.
  4. Select Spool Settings and select the option Print directly to the printer . This will change the Spool Data format from EMF to RAW.
  5. Click OK , Apply , and OK .
  6. Select Start and Run .
  7. Type the name of the HP configuration program in the Open box and click OK .
  8. Click Continue .
  9. Remove the checkmarks from any of the following entries that are present and click OK .
    • Bidirectional communication
    • Network Bidirectional Communication
    • Launch Toolbox when Printing
    • Run Status Monitor when Printing
  10. If prompted, click Restart Windows .
  11. Try printing again.

Solution seven: Remove temporary files to free up resources

Delete unneeded temporary files.
NOTE: Delete temporary files carefully to ensure that necessary files are not deleted. All temporary files use the extension .TMP. If you are unsure about the proper procedures for identifying, locating, or selecting temporary files for deletion, contact Microsoft Windows Technical Support for assistance.

Windows 95, 98, and NT 4.0

  1. Right-click Start and click Find .
  2. Search for all *.TMP files on the C:\ drive.
    1. Type *.TMP on the "Named" line.
    2. Type C:\ on the "Look in" line.
    3. Make sure there is a checkmark next to Include Subfolders and select Find Now .
  3. If any files are returned in the Search Results list, delete them.
    1. Select Edit and Select All .
    2. Select File and Delete . Click Yes or Yes to All .

Windows XP

  1. Right-click Start and click Find .
  2. In the "All or part of the file name:" box, type c:\*.tmp .
  3. Click Search . A list of files with the .TMP extension will be display.
  4. Delete the unnecessary .TMP files by highlighting them and pressing the Delete key.

Windows Me and 2000

  1. Right-click Start and click Search .
  2. Search for all *.TMP files on the C:\ drive.
    1. Type *.TMP in the "Named" field.
    2. Type C:\ in the "Look in" field.
    3. Click Search Options .
    4. Ensure there is a check in Advanced Options .
    5. Ensure there is a check in Search Subfolders .
    6. Click Search Now .
  3. If there are any files in the Search Results list, delete them.
    1. Select Edit .
    2. Click Select All .
    3. Select File and Delete .
    4. Click Yes or Yes to All.

Solution eight: Reduce the number of installed fonts

Windows keeps track of all installed fonts in the memory. Having a large number of fonts installed will reduce the amount of memory available for Windows applications to use. Removing unused fonts can release some of this memory for use by Windows applications, which may improve overall system performance.
NOTE: Increased performance will be most noticeable in Windows 3.1x.

Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, and NT 4.0

  1. Select Start , Settings , Control Panel , and Fonts .
  2. Delete any font that will not be used on a regular basis.
    1. Highlight the font(s) that will not be used. Multiple fonts may be selected by holding down the Ctrl key while selecting each font that is to be deleted.
    2. Select File and Delete . Click Yes to remove the selected font(s).
    3. Repeat Steps a and b until all unneeded fonts have been removed.
  3. Try printing again.

Windows XP

  1. Click Start , then click Control Panel .
  2. In the upper-left corner, click Switch to classic view .
  3. Double-click the Fonts icon.
  4. You may delete any font that will not be used.
    1. Highlight the font(s) that will not be used. Multiple fonts may be selected by holding down the Ctrl key while selecting each font that is to be deleted.
    2. Select File and Delete . Click Yes to remove the selected font(s).
    3. Repeat Steps a and b until all unneeded fonts have been removed.
  5. Try printing again.
