NOTE: The light patterns described in this document are also described as flashing or flashing lights. Flash means the same thing as blink in this document. If your lights flash or blink, this describes the same symptom.

Step one: Fix the blinking lights

Printer lights blink in certain patterns to tell you about specific problems. Follow the steps below if your printer lights are blinking or click here to learn more about your printer lights and buttons (bpd09166) (in English).
Read this document until you see the pattern that your lights are making.
NOTE: There may be more than one reason why your printer lights are blinking, so you may see several solutions.
RESUME LIGHT OFF
POWER LIGHT OFF
Problem

The printer is off.

Solution

Press the POWER button to turn on the printer.
Problem

The POWER light is off and the printer isn’t working.

Solutions

Make sure the printer is connected to an active power source.

  1. Try disconnecting and reconnecting to the power source, or try a different power source.
  2. If connected to a surge protector or power strip make sure it is in the ON position.
  3. Check any breakers to make sure the power source is active.
  4. Press the POWER button a couple of times to see if it will cycle the power.


  • If these steps resolved the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue with 'Step two:Service the product'.
RESUME LIGHT OFF
POWER LIGHT ON
Problem

The POWER light stays on and the RESUME light is off.

Solution

The printer is waiting for you to send it a document to print. Choose the print command from the software that you are using.

Problem

The RESUME light stays on and the printer won’t print.

Solution

1. Turn the printer off.

2. Wait for about a half minute.

3. Turn the printer on.

  • If these steps resolved the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue with 'Step two:Service the product'.
RESUME LIGHT BLINKING
POWER LIGHT ON
Problem

The top cover is open.

Solution

Close the top cover.
Problem

The printer prints a page with an e in the corner or prints miscellaneous letters or symbols.

Problem

The top cover sensor (black plastic arm located on the right side of the right hinge of top cover) is sticking.

Solution

Open the top cover.

1. Locate the top cover sensor (black plastic arm located on the right side of the right hinge).

2. Move the sensor up and down to stop it from sticking.

3. Close the top cover. The RESUME light should stop flashing.
Problem

The printer detects an out-of-paper condition.

Solution

1. Load paper in the IN (paper) tray.

2. Press the RESUME button.
Problem

The printer is not feeding paper correctly.

Solution

Make sure that the paper in the IN tray is loaded properly. The paper should be aligned squarely in the tray with the paper-width and paper-length adjusters fitted snug against the stack of paper.
Problem

The printer did not eject paper when it should have.

Solution

Press the RESUME button. The paper will eject to the OUT tray.
Problem

The printer is waiting for you load paper.

Solution

1. Load paper.

2. Press the RESUME button.
Problem

The printer detects a defective or improperly installed print cartridge, one of both cartridges is out of ink, or a cartridge is missing.

Solution

1. Open the top cover of the printer, the RESUME light will flash and the print cartridge cradle will move to the center of the printer.

2. Lift up one of the print cartridge latches.

3. Grasp the top of the print cartridge and pull it out of its cradle.

4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for the other print cartridge.

NOTE: If you are going to insert new cartridges or are having problems with the cartridges that you are using, make sure that you have removed any tape covering the ink nozzles and do not touch the ink nozzles or the gold-covered contacts.

5. To insert each cartridge, tilt the cartridge towards you as you are inserting it into its cradle.

6. Push the cartridge down firmly into its cradle slot.

7. Close the print cartridge latch.

8. Make sure that you have completed Steps 5-7 for each cartridge.

9. Close the top cover of the printer.

The RESUME light should stop flashing.
Problem

The print cartridge contacts are dirty.

Solution

1. Open the top of the printer, the RESUME light will flash and the print cartridge cradle will move to the center of the printer.

2. Lift up one of the print cartridge latches.

3. Grasp the top of the print cartridge and pull it out of its cradle.

4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for the other print cartridge.

5. Clean each print cartridge with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth to clean each print cartridge by wiping once from the bottom of the copper contact strip to the top.

6. To insert each cartridge, tilt the cartridge towards you as you are inserting it into its cradle.

7. Push the cartridge down firmly into its cradle slot.

8. Close the print cartridge latch.

9. Make sure that you have completed steps 5-8 for each cartridge.

10. Close the top cover of the printer.

The RESUME light should stop flashing.

Problem

There is a paper jam in the printer.

Solution

The printer carriage is stuck.

Solution

Problem

The printer is not working correctly.

Solution

1. Turn the printer off.

2. Wait for about a half minute.

3. Turn the printer on.

4. If this does not correct the problem, then turn the printer off again.

5. Unplug the power and printer cable from the printer.

6. Plug the power and printer cable back into the printer.

7. Turn on the printer.

  • If these steps resolved the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue with 'Step two:Service the product'.
Problem

The computer has the wrong printer driver (software) for the printer.

Problem

Your printer and computer are not communicating correctly.

Solution

1. Turn the printer off.

2. Disconnect the printer cable.

3. Turn the printer on.

4. Print a self-test page by holding down the RESUME button for five seconds (or until a paper feeds into the printer). If the self-test printout is OK, the printer is OK.

5. Reconnect the printer cable.

6. Try to print.

7. If the lights continue to blink alternately, try another printer cable.

  • If these steps resolved the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue with 'Step two:Service the product'.

Problem

The printer is not working.

Solution

1. Turn the printer off.

2. Wait for about a half minute.

3. Turn the printer on.

4. If this does not correct the problem, then turn the printer off again.

5. Unplug the power and printer cable from the printer.

6. Plug the power and printer cable back into the printer.

7. Turn on the printer.

  • If these steps resolved the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue with 'Step two: Service the product'.

Step two: Service the product

These steps apply to all countries/regions except Asia Pacific.
If you have completed all the preceding steps and are still experiencing a problem, service the product.
Determine if your product is in warranty or out of warranty. If you need help determining your product’s warranty status, go to HP’s Warranty Check Tool .

  • If your product is out of warranty, fees might apply for contacting HP.
