Cleaning the All-in-One
With normal usage, your HP All-in-One should be cleaned every six months; for high usage, every three months, and then as necessary to correct cleaning-related problems. This document contains the recommended cleaning methods for all models of the following product families:
- All HP Officejet All-in-Ones
- HP Officejet Pro All-in-Ones
- HP Printer/Scanner/Copiers (PSC)
- HP Color Copiers
- HP Inkjet Faxes
WARNING: Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer before following any of the cleaning procedures to avoid the chance of electrical shock. Also, unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. Wait for 30 seconds for the static to be discharged before plugging it back into the wall outlet.
CAUTION: Never spray cleaning fluid directly into the unit. Any time a cleaning solution is used on a part, allow the part to dry thoroughly before continuing. Never use any kind of cleaning solution on silver-painted components. Cleaning solutions may remove the paint.
Use a soft cloth lightly moistened with water to wipe the exterior case, keypad, and control panel. A mild detergent may be used for more stubborn stains.
NOTE:Purified or distilled water is recommended.
Scanner glass and white scan backing
- Black spots or lines appear in copies and/or faxes.
- The message Replace Scanner Cover displays in the front panel display window.
- Special copy features such as Clone are not working correctly.
The scanner glass position and size will depend on the product.
- Scroll-fed products have a narrow glass strip located under the front panel or under the scanner cover.
- Flatbed products have a large scanner glass under the top cover.NOTE: The underneath side of the scanner glass cannot be cleaned on any product. This is unlikely to be necessary and should only be done by an authorized service provider.
NOTE: The HP Officejet K and Fax 1200 series do not have a scanner glass. Go to the section below to clean the white reference.
Clean the glass using a soft, lint-free cloth lightly moistened with a non-abrasive glass cleaner.
NOTE: Do not spray fluids directly on the HP product. Spray the fluid on the cloth used for cleaning. Fluids may damage the electrical circuits.
Cleaning the white reference strip or pad
After cleaning the glass, it is important to clean the white scan backing or reference strip.
The reference strip or scan backing is used to calibrate the scanner mechanism and provides a white background when scanning. It must be clean and white for proper calibration and operation.
For scroll fed all-in-ones
The reference strip is a narrow white strip located on the bottom of the scanner cover (see Figure 3) or under the front panel (see Figure 4), depending on the product. It sits directly over the scanner glass when the scanner cover is inserted or the front panel is closed.
For flatbed all-in-ones
The white reference is the large white area under the document (top) cover.
Clean the white reference strip using a soft, lint-free cloth lightly moistened with a non-abrasive glass cleaner.
NOTE:Do not spray fluids directly on the HP product. Spray the fluid on the cloth used for cleaning. Fluids may damage the electrical circuits.
Clean the rollers if the paper fails to feed smoothly into the unit. Clean them with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water.
NOTE:Purified or distilled water is recommended for cleaning the rollers.

CAUTION:Turn off the unit and unplug the power cord from the back of the unit and the power outlet before cleaning the rollers.
HP Officejet 500, 600, and 700 series, PSC 300 series, and Fax 910 and 920
Remove the paper tray from the back of the unit to access the paper feed rollers shown in the figure below.
Remove the scanner cover to access the internal paper feed rollers (shown in the figure below).
HP Officejet Pro 1150, 1170 series Color Copier 110, 120, 140, 145, 150, and 155
Remove the paper supply tray to access paper feed rollers.
HP Officejet R, T, G, V, D, K, 4100, 5100, 5500, 6100, 6200, and 7100 series PSC 500, 700, 900, PSC 1200, PSC 1300, PSC 1600, PSC 2100, 2170, PSC 2200, PSC 2350, PSC 2400, and PSC 2500 series Color Copier 160, 170, 180, 190, 260, 270, 280, and 290 Digital Copier 310, 410, 610
Remove the rear access door to access the paper feed rollers. There will be some slight differences depending on the model but they are basically the same.
Pull open the front panel to access the document feed rollers.
The service or capping station
The following models have ink service stations or capping stations that should be cleaned.
- HP Officejet 500 series
- HP Officejet 600 series
- HP Officejet 700 series
- HP PSC 300 series
The service station caps the nozzles when the unit is idle to keep the ink from drying, and is located where the cartridges return when the unit is finished printing or turned off (usually on the right side). You will need to reach behind the casing to clean the service station.

Using the figure above, follow the instructions below to clean the service station:
- Turn on the power to the unit and open the top cover and/or the cartridge access door. The carriage will move to the center allowing access to the cartridges.
- Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Use a clean, soft cloth or cotton swab lightly moistened with water to gently clean Wiper 1 (call-out 1) and the top surface of the color cartridge cap (call-out 2). Always use a light touch when cleaning the print cartridge caps. Excessive force will unseat the caps and damage the print cartridges.
- Use a soft, clean cloth or cotton swab lightly moistened with water to gently clean Wiper 2 (call-out 3) and the top surface of black ink cartridge cap (call-out 4).NOTE: For units with only one ink cartridge, call-outs 3 and 4 of the above graphic will not be present.
- Repeat until all ink and debris is removed.NOTE: Purified or distilled water is recommended. It is also possible to replace the ink service station on some models. Review the user-replaceable parts list for the product to determine if this is possible.
Problems sometimes corrected by cleaning
Frequent paper jams on HP Officejet 500, 600, 700, PSC 300, HP Fax 910, 920

Cleaning did not resolve a problem
If you are experiencing a problem with your unit that cleaning did not resolve, try the solutions listed below before having the unit serviced:
- Try cleaning the unit again. In some cases, repeating the cleaning steps will resolve the problem.
- Search for other documents that may cover the issue you are experiencing.
