Installing the HP Officejet G Series on a Network

Introduction

HP Officejet G series all-in-one products can be connected over networks in two different ways: peer-to-peer (direct) with an HP Jetdirect print server (models 170x, 175x, 300x, or 70x) or by using Windows Print Sharing. Follow the sequences listed below to install the software for the all-in-one product. For assistance at any time during the software installation, click Help . Instructions pertaining to that installation window will appear. Use the table of contents to find help with specific installation problems. For network connection troubleshooting, refer to HP document Network Connection With a Print Server Troubleshooting.
NOTE: Printing and scanning may take longer when using a network connection than when directly connected. The speed available will depend on the amount of network traffic.

Novell clients

It may be possible to have full or partial functionality on a computer running Novell Client. HP does not support the HP Officejet G series all-in-one on a client-server network architecture. For full functionality, the Novell server must be bypassed, and the connection to the print server set to peer-to-peer (or direct). To do this, install either the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) or Internetwork Packet Exchange/Sequenced Packet Exchange (IPX/SPX) protocols. The latest Novell client software should be loaded.

Citrix networks

While connection to a Citrix based network may be possible, HP does not support connection through a Citrix network. HP supports the all-in-one in no other networking configuration than the peer-to-peer networking configuration.

Microsoft(R) Windows XP

This document does not cover installing the HP Officejet G series in Windows XP. To learn about installing the HP Officejet G series all-in-one in Windows XP, refer to HP document Installing the HP Officejet G and K Series Products in Microsoft (R) Windows XP.

Windows 2000

The finished production version of Windows 2000 is now available from HP. The software version required is 2.43 or later (click here to learn how to determine the software version ). This software installs in exactly the same way as the other Windows operating system software.
NOTE: Before upgrading to Windows 2000 or Windows Millennium, uninstall the HP Officejet G series software. Reinstall the software after the new operating system installation is complete.

Uninstaller Utility

In Windows 2000, many items cannot be removed from the Windows Registry by default. Certain permissions require modification to allow a more complete removal of the software. Complete the following steps to enable the permissions in the Windows Registry:
  1. Click Start , and then click Run .
  2. Type regedt32 , and then click OK .
  3. Go to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT window, and highlight the main branch.
  4. Click Security , and then click Permissions .
  5. Set the permission for Everyone to Full , and then click OK .
  6. Select the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE window, and navigate to the System/CurrentControlSet/Enum branch.
  7. Click Security , and then click Permissions .
  8. Set the permission for Everyone to Full , and then click OK .
HP has created an uninstaller utility to assist in removing HP Officejet software. Download the uninstaller utility from the HP Officejet G Series Product Support Web page. Use the uninstaller utility if any of the following circumstances are true:
  • The system was upgraded from another operating system, and other HP all-in-one software was installed before the upgrade and not removed.
  • HP Officejet software has been installed since the computer was upgraded to Windows 2000.
  • The HP Officejet G series software does not install correctly the first time.
Enable the registry permissions as described above, and then run the forced uninstaller.

Windows Millennium Edition (Me)

Windows Me is supported by software version 2.43 and later. Software versions prior to 2.43 can be installed on a computer running Windows Me, but TWAIN scanning and network printer discovery will not function properly. A patch to update these functions with older software versions is available. Download the patch from the HP Officejet G Series Product Support Web page. Refer to the section below on determining the software version to verify the software version number.

Obtaining software

Download HP Officejet G series software from the Internet or order it from HP Software Distribution. The downloaded versions of the HP Officejet G series software do not include the ReadIRIS Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software because of licensing constraints. The HP Officejet G55 and G85 software downloads do not include the networking software because of file size restraints. Those using the HP Officejet G85 series can download the G95 software to gain the network connection option. Order the software CD-ROM from HP to obtain full functionality. Go to the HP Officejet G Series Product Support Web page to download the drivers or order a new CD-ROM.

Software versions

The software version can be found in two places. It is printed on the disk, and a coded version number can be found by clicking Help and About your HP Software from the Director screen.

Before installing the software

Before installing the all-in-one product software, follow the steps below. Client-server networks are not supported. If print jobs must be submitted through a computer that is designated as the host print server (similar to a Novell network), the network configuration is not supported. Print-only functionality may be obtained on client-server networks with an alternative print driver, but Hewlett Packard does not support this connection type. Contact the network solution vendor (such as Novell) for assistance making these network connections.
  1. Follow the directions on the Setup poster for setting up the hardware. Do not connect the all-in-one to the computer until instructed to do so on the Setup poster.
  2. Start with a new Windows session by restarting the computer.
  3. When installing on a Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 system, make sure an administrator login is used to log onto the system.
  4. The HP Officejet G series software uses the languages set in Regional Settings from the Windows Control Panel. These settings must match the version of Windows and the language in use. Verify this setting before installing. Windows is not the same program in other countries and regions of the world.
  5. If the computer has more than one network card, or a network card and a modem (dial-up, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), or cable), install the IPX/SPX network protocol for the network card. Delete the IPX entries for anything other than the network card. During the network portion of the installation, choose to communicate using this protocol instead of the TCP/IP protocol.
  6. Close any programs that open at startup, such as faxing software and antivirus software. Antivirus software usually places an icon next to the time in the lower right corner of the screen. Right-clicking this icon should display a menu that allows shutting down or disabling the antivirus software.
    NOTE: Do not install two different HP Officejet G series product models on a single computer. This will not work. For computers that have more than one version of Windows installed, the all-in-one product can only be installed into one Windows version. Install an alternative print only driver such as an HP Deskjet 970 printer on the secondary operating system.

HP Jetdirect network installation

The HP Officejet G95 all-in-one product comes with the HP Jetdirect print server 170x. A working network must be in place before installing the all-in-one product. If the HP Jetdirect print server 170x is purchased separately (for the HP Officejet G55, G55xi, G85 and G85xi all-in-one products), it must be the latest version to achieve full network compatibility.
The HP Jetdirect 170x Office Connect, HP Jetdirect 175x, HP Jetdirect 300x and HP Jetdirect 70x print servers may also be used to connect the all-in-one product to a network. The HP Jetdirect 300x must have firmware version H.08.05 or later to achieve full network capability. Determine the firmware version by pressing the TEST button on the HP Jetdirect print server. A page is printed that shows the firmware version. Visit the HP External Print Server Web site to obtain a firmware update for the HP Jetdirect print server.
The HP Jetdirect 500x print server can also be used provided the HP Officejet G series is connected to parallel port number 1 of the Jetdirect 500x. The HP Jetdirect 500x print server must have firmware version H.08.05 or later to achieve full network capability.
NOTE: If the networking option on the Installation Type dialog box is unavailable, the software was either downloaded or an early version. Please view the information above on obtaining software to obtain the latest version on CD-ROM.
Complete the following steps to install to the network:
  1. Connect the all-in-one to the HP Jetdirect print server as shown in Figure 1 below. Do not use the installation CD included in the print server package, when installing using the "Networked" setup type. The print server software is incorporated into the all-in-one product network installation. Turn on all components.

  2. Allow three to five minutes to pass and then print a test page from the HP Jetdirect print server by pressing the Test button on the back of the print server. This test will verify that the connection is good and list the network information for the print server. Find the IP address on the Test page.
  3. Insert the all-in-one product CD into the CD-ROM drive. If the software does not automatically open, then click Start , click Run , type (D):\SETUP.EXE (where "D" is the letter of the CD-ROM drive), and then click OK .
  4. The software installation windows will appear.
  5. Click Install to start the software installation.
  6. A Welcome message will appear. Select Next to continue.
  7. Accept the HP Software License Agreement by clicking Yes .
  8. The Installation Type menu should appear, review the options available.
  9. Select the Networked installation type, and then click Next . If the Networked option is unavailable, see the information above about obtaining the drivers . Some downloads of the Officejet G software do not include the network portions.
  10. A different destination folder can be selected. HP recommends that you accept the default location by clicking the Next button.
  11. There is an opportunity to change the name of the driver icons that will be added to the Printers folder. If no name change is required, click Next to continue.
  12. The installer will now copy the driver files to the hard drive.
  13. When the installation is complete, a message will appear indicating that the installation is complete. There is an opportunity to take the product tour at this time. Click Next to continue.
  14. Carefully read and follow the directions in the final installation screen. Verify that all of the hardware is connected and that the HP Officejet G series is turned on. Click Finish when you have read the information on the screen and verified that the hardware is connected and ready. The computer may shut down at this point. If it does, turn the computer back on.
  15. The network setup window will appear. Select the Search for HP Officejet option. The network installation wizard will search the Local Area Network (LAN) for any all-in-one products that are connected. Click Next to continue.
  16. The wizard should find the all-in-one product and perform the setup.
    1. If more than one all-in-one product is found, verify that the IP address matches the one from the printout. Highlight the correct entry, and then click Next .
    2. If the all-in-one product is not listed, manually enter the IP address by backing up one window in the installation and selecting the option to enter the IP address instead of searching for the unit. Enter the IP address from the test page, and then click Next .
  17. A screen to determine the network communication mode will appear. Select the mode that is correct for the network, and then click Next to continue.
  18. A dialog box asking if there will be any applications that print in DOS will appear. The all-in one product does not support DOS printing. Select No , and then click Next to continue.
  19. Faxing models will proceed to the Fax Setup Wizard. Setup is complete for HP Officejet G55 models. When the setup is complete and/or at the end of the Fax Setup Wizard, a Print Test Page window appears. Click Print Test Page to verify the installation. Click Next to continue.
  20. When the setup is complete, a Congratulations message confirming that the installation was complete should appear.
  21. The installation software performs a system test at the end of the installation.

Using Windows Print Sharing to share the HP all-in-one on a network

If the all-in-one product is locally installed to a computer that is on a network, other computers can print to it. If the network server is running Windows NT, Windows 2000 or Windows 95/98 with Windows 95/98 clients, the server can automatically load the required drivers onto the client computer using the point-and-print feature. If the network uses a Windows 9X server, the driver will have to be loaded manually onto a Windows NT 4.0 or 2000 client computer. This type of installation is called peer-to-peer.
NOTE: Windows Printer Sharing will only allow access to the printing functionality of the HP all-in-one. The HP all-in-one must be connected using an HP Jetdirect print server to gain access to advanced features.
All of the computers must be connected to the network and the printer must be installed on the local or host computer before setting up printer sharing. File and Print sharing must be enabled on all computers. This feature is enabled automatically in Windows NT and 2000; however, it is necessary to enable this feature manually in Windows 95 and 98. Complete the following steps to enable File and Print sharing:
  1. Right-click NetworkNeighborhood , and then click Properties .
  2. If File and print sharing for Microsoft (R) networks is not shown in the list of installed network components, click File and Print Sharing .
  3. Select the desired sharing option.
  4. Click OK to save the changes and exit this dialog box.
  5. Follow any instruction messages that appear and restart the computer.
    NOTE: The Server (host) must be set up before setting up the client computers.

Setting up the server or host

NOTE: You must be logged on as an administrator to complete these steps in Windows NT and 2000.
  1. The printer should be connected directly to the computer and install the software using the local (not a network) installation type option.
  2. On the Windows taskbar, click Start , click Settings , and then click Printers .
  3. Right-click the all-in-one product printer icon, and then click Sharing from the menu. The Properties dialog box will appear with the Sharing section open.
  4. Click SharedAs , and then enter a unique name for the printer in the Share Name box to identify the all-in-one product. Write this name down because it will be required to set up the client computers. Click OK if the server (host) computer is running Windows 95/98 or Windows NT and 2000 servers that only have Windows NT and 2000 clients to finish the setup.
  5. If you are setting up a Windows NT server that supports Windows 95/98 clients, complete the following steps:
    1. Click WINDOWS 95 in the Alternative Drivers section. This will enable point-and-print to download the correct driver to the Windows 95/98 client computers.
    2. Click OK , and then insert the software CD-ROM (close the install window if it appears).
    3. In the Printer Drivers for Windows 95 dialog box, click Browse . Browse to the all-in-one product CD-ROM and open the Drivers, WIN95 folder (even if you are using Windows 98).
    4. Double-click the HPOP9507.INF file.
    5. Click OK to save the changes and exit.

Setting up a point-and-print client

Use these steps with the following connection types:
  • A Windows 95/98 server (host computer) with only Windows 95/98 clients
  • A Windows NT 4.0 or 2000 server (host computer) connected to another computer
    NOTE: Windows 95/98 servers that must connect to a Windows NT 4.0 or 2000 client must use the peer-to-peer instructions below this section.
  1. Double-click Network Neighborhood .
  2. Find the name of the computer that is attached to the all-in-one product and double-click it. Find the name of the server by right-clicking Network Neighborhood on the server, and then selecting Identification .
  3. Double-click the shared name of the all-in-one product.
  4. A message Before You Can Use the Printer… appears. Click Yes and follow the instructions to set-up the printer.

Setting up a peer-to-peer client

Use these steps when setting up a Windows NT 4.0 or 2000 client to work with a Windows 95/98 server.
  1. Click Start , click Settings , and then click Printers .
  2. Double-click the AddPrinter icon. In Windows 2000, click Next .
  3. In Windows NT 4, select My Computer . In Windows 2000 select LocalPrinter and clear the Automatically Detect My Printer check box. Click Next to continue.
  4. In Windows NT 4.0, click Add Port . In Windows 2000, click Create New Port .
  5. In Windows NT 4.0, click LocalPort , and then click NewPort to continue. In Windows 2000, verify that LocalPort is in the window, and then click Next .
  6. The Enter a Port Name dialog box will appear. Type in the name of the server and the share name of the printer. Find the name of the server by right-clicking NetworkNeighborhood on the server, and then selecting Identification . The line will look similar to this: \\hostcomputer\HPOffice
  7. Click OK to close the Port Name dialog box, and then click Close on the PrinterPorts dialog box.
  8. Verify that the new port exists in the AvailablePorts list, and then click Next .
  9. Select HaveDisk , and then insert the all-in-one product CD-ROM. Quit the installer if it starts.
  10. Change the drive letter to point to the CD-ROM drive, and then click Browse .
  11. In the dialog box, open the Drivers folder, and then open either the Windows NT 4.0 folder or the Windows 2000 folder.
  12. In Windows NT 4.0, double-click the HPOPNT07.INF file. In Windows 2000, double-click the HPOP2K07.INF file.
  13. Click OK to continue, and then follow the rest of the Add Printer Wizard menus to finish the install.
  14. Verify the installation by printing a test page.
