How to Print Internal Clean Cartridge Tests

Introduction

This document outlines the procedure for utilizing the built-in internal cartridge clean tests on specific HP Photosmart printers. The internal clean cartridge tests can be used to clear the cartridge nozzles of obstructions as well as verify that the printer internal firmware is functioning properly. It is always preferable to perform all these tests when the communication cable has been disconnected from the printer, and after having turned off the printer and turned it on again.

HP Photosmart 100 and 130 printers

  1. Ensure that the memory card has been removed from the memory card slot.
  2. Make sure 10 x 15 mm paper is loaded in the In Tray face up.
  3. Hold the Print button for about five seconds or until the printer makes a noise. The printer will appear to pause for several seconds prior to printing the test page.
  4. Once the test page has printed, examine the printed page. If the printout is not clear or contains lines in the print perform another test page. This process may need to be attempted up to three times.
  5. If after three attempted cleanings the problem still persists, contact HP Support.

HP Photosmart 145 printers

  1. Ensure that the memory card has been removed from the memory card slot.
  2. Make sure 10 x 15 mm paper is loaded into the In Tray printing surface up.
  3. On the control panel, press the Right Arrow button once to highlight Clean Cartridge Test Page.
  4. Press the OK button.
  5. Once the level one clean cartridge test page has printed, the printer will display a "clean cartridge more?" message.
  6. Examine the level one page. If the print is not clear and/or there are lines in the color bars, continue to Step 7. If the print quality is acceptable and there are no flaws with the color bar, press the Cancel button.
  7. Press OK to print the second level clean cartridge page.
  8. Once the second level clean cartridges test page has printed the printer will display a "Clean cartridge maximum amount?' message. Examine the level one page. If the print is not clear and or there are lines in the color bars, continue to Step 9. If the print quality is acceptable and there are no flaws with the color bar, press the Cancel button.
  9. Press OK to print the third level clean cartridge page.
  10. Once the third level clean cartridges test page has printed, examine the page. The printer will provide the option for another clean cartridge test page. If the problem persists, contact HP Support.

HP Photosmart 1315 printers

  1. Ensure that the memory card has been removed from the memory card slot.
  2. Make sure plain white paper is loaded into the In Tray.
  3. On the control panel, press the Menu button.
  4. Press the Down button twice to select Clean cartridges.
  5. After confirming that paper is loaded into the paper tray, press the OK Check Mark button to print the first clean cartridge page.
  6. Examine the level one page. If the print is not clear and/or there are lines in the color bars, continue to Step 7. If the print quality is acceptable and there are no flaws with the color bar, press the Cancel button.
  7. Press the OK Check Mark button to print the second level clean cartridge page.
  8. Once the second level clean cartridges test page has printed, examine the level two page. If the print is not clear and/or there are lines in the color bars, continue to Step 10. If the print quality is acceptable and there are no flaws with the color bar, press the Cancel button.
  9. Press the OK Check Mark button to print the third level clean cartridge page.
  10. Once the third level clean cartridges test page has printed examine the printed page. If the problem persists, contact HP Support.

HP Photosmart 7150 and 7260 printers

  1. Make sure plain paper is loaded into the In Tray.
  2. To perform the first level cartridge cleaning is a spit and wipe, press and hold the Power button while pressing the Cancel button twice, then release the Power button. The printer will generate a series of noises as it performs the cleaning.
  3. Print a test page from the computer.
  4. Once the cleaning has completed and the test page has printed, examine the test page. If the print is not clear and/or there are lines in the color bars, continue to Step 5. If the print quality is acceptable, disregard the subsequent steps.
  5. To perform a second level cartridge cleaning, press and hold the Power button while pressing the Cancel button twice. Release the Power button and press the Resume button. The printer will generate a series of noises as it performs the cleaning.
  6. Print a test page from the computer.
  7. Once the cartridge cleaning has completed and the test page has printed, examine the test page. If the print is not clear and/or there are lines in the color bars, continue to Step 8. If the print quality is acceptable disregard the subsequent steps.
  8. To perform a super clean, press and hold the Power button while pressing the Cancel button twice. Press the Resume button twice then release the Power button. The printer will generate a series of noises.
  9. Print a test page from the computer.
  10. Once the super clean has the completed and the test page has printed, examine the test page. If the print is not clear and/or there are lines in the color bars, continue to Step 11. If the print quality is acceptable disregard the subsequent step.
  11. To perform a pen nozzle test, press and hold the Power button while pressing the Cancel button eight times. Press the Resume button four times then release the Power button. The printer will generate a series of noises then print a page displaying a test pattern. If there are gaps in the printouts the cartridge(s) may need to be replaced.

HP Photosmart 7350 printers

  1. Ensure that the memory card has been removed from the memory card slot and that plain white paper is loaded into the In Tray.
  2. On the control panel, press the left side of the Tools button until Clean the Print Cartridges? is displayed on the readout screen.
  3. Press the OK button.
  4. After confirming that paper is loaded into the paper tray, press the OK button.
  5. Examine the printed page. If the print is not clear and/or there are lines in the color bars continue to Step 6. If the print quality is acceptable and there are no flaws with the color bar, press the Cancel button.
  6. Press OK to print the second level clean cartridge page.
  7. Once the second level clean cartridges test page has printed, examine the printed page. If the print is not clear and/or there are lines in the color bars continue to Step 8. If the print quality is acceptable and there are no flaws with the color bar, press the Cancel button.
  8. Press OK to print the third level clean cartridge page.
  9. Once the third level clean cartridges test page has printed, examine the page. If the problem persists contact HP Support.

HP Photosmart 7550 printers

  1. Ensure that the memory card has been removed from the memory card slot.
  2. Make sure plain white paper is loaded into the In Tray.
  3. On the control panel, press the Menu button. Using the directional arrows, select Clean Cartridges .
  4. Press the OK button.
  5. After confirming that paper is loaded into the paper tray, press the OK button.
  6. Once the level one clean cartridge test page has printed, examine the printed page. If the print is not clear and/or there are lines in the color bars, continue to Step 7. If the print quality is acceptable and there are no flaws with the color bar, select No using the directional arrows, then press OK .
  7. Press OK to print the second level clean cartridge page.
  8. Once the second level clean cartridges test page has printed, examine the printed page. If the print is not clear and/or there are line in the color bars, continue to Step 9. If the print quality is acceptable and there are no flaws with the color bar, select No using the directional arrows, then press OK .
  9. Press OK to print the third level clean cartridge page.
  10. Once the third level clean cartridges test page has printed ,examine the page. If the problem persists contact HP Support.

HP Photosmart 7660 printers

  1. Make sure plain paper is loaded in the In Tray.
  2. Press the Left Arrow menu button four times.
  3. Ensure that the printer display indicates "clean cartridges."
  4. Press OK .
  5. Ensure plain paper is loaded into the tray then press OK again to print a level one clean cartridge test.
  6. Once the level one clean cartridge test page has printed, examine the level one page. If the print is not clear and/or there are lines in the color bars, continue to Step 7. If the print quality is acceptable and there are no flaws with the color bar, press the Cancel button.
  7. Press OK to print the second level clean cartridge page.
  8. Once the second level clean cartridges test page has printed, examine the printed page. If the print is not clear and/or there are lines in the color bars continue to Step 9. If the print quality is acceptable and there are no flaws with the color bar, press the Cancel button.
  9. Press OK to print the third level clean cartridge page.
  10. Once the third level clean cartridges test page has printed examine the page. If the problem persists contact HP Support.

HP Photosmart 245, 7755, 7760, and 7960 printers

  1. Make sure plain paper is loaded in the In Tray. For the Photosmart 245, the paper should be loaded face up.
  2. Press the Menu button.
  3. Press the Down Arrow until the Tools is highlighted.
  4. Press the OK button.
  5. Press the Down Arrow until Clean Cartridges is highlighted.
  6. Press OK .
  7. Press OK again to print a level one clean cartridge test.
  8. Once the level one clean cartridge test page has printed, examine the printed page. If the print is not clear and/or there are lines in the color bars, continue to Step 9. If the print quality is acceptable and there are no flaws with the color bar, press the Down Arrow once then press OK .
  9. Press OK to print the second level clean cartridge page. Yes is selected by default
  10. Once the second level clean cartridges test page has printed, examine the printed page. If the print is not clear and/or there are lines in the color bars, continue to Step 11. If the print quality is acceptable and there are no flaws with the color bar, press the Down Arrow once then press OK .
  11. Yes is selected by default, press OK to print the third level clean cartridge page.
  12. Once the third level clean cartridges test page has printed examine the page. The printer will not ask you to print another clean cartridge test page. If the problem persists contact HP Support.
