In some situations it may be necessary to reinstall Windows Media Center Edition and all of the software originally included with your notebook computer.
CAUTION:Restoring the Media Center Edition operating system will result in the loss of any and all data on the notebook. Please backup any data on a CD-R/RW or other removable media before following these steps.
To reinstall the Media Center operating system, you will need the following CD-ROMs that were included with your notebook:
  • Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition Disc 1
  • Windows XP Professional Disc 2
  • Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition Disc 3
  • Media Center Bonus CD-ROM (Multimedia Feature Pack for Microsoft Windows XP Media Center)
  • Driver Recovery CD-ROM
  • Application Recovery CD-ROM

Solution

Use the following steps to reinstall the Media Center operating system:
  1. Turn on the notebook and insert the Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition Disc 1.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions while the Operating System CD-ROM is inserted.
  3. At the prompt, insert the CD-ROM titled Windows XP Professional CD 2.
  4. When the setup program prompts you, insert the CD-ROM labeled Operating System CD Disc 2.
  5. Once completed, you will be prompted to insert a disc titled "Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 CD". The setup is requesting the incorrect CD-ROM at this point. Instead, insert the CD-ROM labeled Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition Disc 1.
  6. Once the installation is completed, insert the CD-ROM labeled Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition Disc 3.
NOTE:You will not be prompted to insert this CD-ROM.
  7. Once the installation is completed, insert the CD-ROM labeled Media Center Bonus CD (Multimedia Feature Pack for Microsoft Windows XP Media Center).
NOTE:You will not be prompted to insert this CD-ROM.
  8. At this point the Media Center operating system is correctly installed. Insert the Driver Recovery CD-ROM and follow the prompts to install the required software and drivers.
  9. Once the driver installations have completed, insert the Application Recovery CD-ROM and follow the prompts to install the programs and applications that are included with your notebook PC.
