Quick Check for the HP DVD Writer Internal Drives

Introduction

This document provides steps to assist in determining whether service is required on these products. If service is not required, the steps in this document will assist in solving some common product issues. If the product needs more extensive troubleshooting, please click here to find further assistance.
This document can be used with the following HP DVD Writer drives:

Section A: Does the HP DVD-Writer tray open properly?

  1. Connect the DVD Writer to the end of the PC internal power cable (see Figure 4).
  2. Press the EJECT button on the front panel of the HP DVD Writer (Figure 5, call-out 1).
  3. If the tray fails to open, make sure there is no CD or DVD media inside the HP DVD Writer.
  4. Disconnect the power cord from the HP DVD Writer.
  5. Insert a straightened paper clip or a pin into the manual ejection hole in the front panel of the HP DVD Writer (see Figure 5, call-out 2).
  6. If the tray fails to open, the DVD Writer requires service.
  7. If the tray opens, verify that no CD or DVD is in the tray.
  8. Close the tray.
  9. Reconnect the power cord.
  10. Press the EJECT button on the front panel of the HP DVD Writer (see Figure 5, call-out 1).
  11. If the tray fails to open, the HP DVD Writer requires service.
  12. If the tray opens, go to Section B to see if the HP DVD Writer will recognize an original DVD or CD.

Section B: Does the HP DVD-Writer recognize an original CD or DVD?

  1. Check that the HP DVD-Writer is already connected to the PC internal power cord.
  2. Open the tray by pushing the EJECT button on the front panel of the HP DVD Writer (see Figure 6, call-out 1). If the tray fails to open, go to Section A .
  3. Insert an original commercial data, audio or video CD or DVD.
  4. Close the tray.
  5. Check the General Status LED on the front panel of the HP DVD Writer (see Figure 6, call-out 2).
  6. If the General Status LED flashes on and off for a few seconds then stops with the LED remaining off, the HP DVD Writer may have recognized the CD or DVD (go to Step 7).
  7. Turn the computer off, connect the IDE cable (see Figure 7) and turn on the computer. When OS is completely started, open the HP DVD Writer logical unit. If the CD or DVD contents are displayed the HP DVD Writer recognizes the CD or DVD, and is functioning correctly.
  8. If the General Status LED continuously flashes on and off, or is permanently on, the HP DVD Writer fails to recognize the CD or DVD. Repeat Steps 1-7 with a different original CD or DVD. If the General Status LED continues to flash on and off, or is permanently on, the HP DVD Writer requires service.
