'Printing In Ink-Backup Mode' Error Message Displays on the Computer

  • PrintPrint
This document is for the Deskjet 6940, 6943, 6980, and 6983 printer series.
When the printer detects that only one print cartridge is installed, ink-backup mode is initiated. The printer still functions in this printing mode, but the printing speed is slower and the quality of the printouts is affected.

Solution

If you receive the ink-backup mode message and two print cartridges are installed in the printer, follow the steps in Method one. If you receive the ink-backup mode message when one print cartridge is installed in the printer, follow the steps in Method two.

Method one: Remove the tape from second print cartridge

If you receive the ink-backup mode message and two print cartridges are installed in the printer, verify that the plastic tape has been removed from each print cartridge. When the protective piece of plastic tape covers the print cartridge contacts, the printer cannot detect that the print cartridge is installed.
  1. Open the printer cover.
  2. Wait until the print cartridge cradle moves to the right side of the printer and is idle and silent, and then lift the print cartridge latch to the open position.
  3. Remove the print cartridge from the cradle.
  4. Verify that the plastic tape has been removed from the print cartridge.
CAUTION:Do not touch the print cartridge ink nozzles or copper contacts. Touching these parts will result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. Do not remove the copper strips. They are required electrical contacts.
  5. Hold the print cartridge so that the copper strips are on the bottom and facing toward the printer, and then slide the print cartridge into the cradle as shown.
    Figure 1: Insert the cartridge
  6. Push down on the print cartridge latch until it snaps closed.
    Figure 2: Close the latch
  7. Repeat steps 3, 4, 5, and 6 for the remaining cartridge, if necessary.
  8. After installing both cartridges, close the top cover. The printer will automatically align the print cartridges.

Method two: Insert the missing print cartridge

  1. Open the printer cover.
  2. Wait until the print cartridge cradle moves to the right side of the printer and is idle and silent, and then lift the print cartridge latch for the missing print cartridge to the open position.
  3. Remove the print cartridge from its packaging and carefully remove the pink plastic tape. Hold the print cartridge so that the copper strips are on the bottom and facing toward the printer.

CAUTION:Do not touch the print cartridge ink nozzles or copper contacts. Touching these parts will result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. Do not remove the copper strips. They are required electrical contacts.
  4. Hold the print cartridge so that the copper strips are on the bottom and facing toward the printer, and then slide the print cartridge into the cradle as shown.
    Figure 4: Insert the cartridge
  5. Push down on the print cartridge latch until it snaps closed.
    Figure 5: Close the latch
