This document provides information on the Lithium-Ion battery testing utility supplied with HP and Compaq notebook PC computers.
Which HP and Compaq notebook PCs are supported by the HP Battery Check?
All 2006 or later HP notebook PCs are supported by the HP Battery Check.

What is the Battery Check?
The HP Battery Check is an easy to use utility that is available on HP Notebook PCs that provides information on the status of the batteries installed in the notebook PC. It reports on the condition of both the primary and secondary battery if the individual notebook is equipped with a secondary battery.
On the Battery Check display panel, the information is organized into three indicator areas - Installed Batteries, Health, and Storage Capacity. These indicators update every five seconds. Messages displayed on the panel provide useful information about the battery status, and any actions that need to be taken. Where can I get the Battery Check if it is not on my notebook PC?
The Battery Check utility was installed when the supported PCs were manufactured. If the utility was removed from the PC, click on this link to download and install HP Battery Check for Windows XP.
For computers with Vista or Windows 7 operating systems, the preferred battery testing method is to install the HP Support Assistant which supports the Battery Check and other helpful testing and maintenance tools.
How do I start the Battery Check?
The Battery Check utility can be launched by clicking the Battery Check icon on the desktop , or click Start and then click HP Battery Check.
What do the different battery status indicators mean?
The Battery Check utility provides three indicators of the current battery status: Charge Remaining, Battery Health and Storage Capacity.
The Charge Remaining indicator is the electrical charge remaining on the battery. This value is also indicated by the Power icon located in the Windows system tray. If more than one battery is installed in the notebook, the Total Battery Power Remaining is indicated on the Battery Check utility. This value is the summation of the remaining charge on all of the batteries installed in the notebook PC.
The Battery Health indicator provides the overall status of all of the battery cells built into your battery. A notebook battery has multiple cells. The Battery Health status is valid only when the notebook is plugged into the AC Adapter and only one battery is installed.
- If the Battery Health status is "Replace", one or more of the cells can no longer accept a charge or the storage capacity is "Low" and the battery should to be replaced. Instructions stating where to purchase a replacement battery or if the battery is covered by HP under warranty will display.
- If the Battery Health status is "Invalid", either the AC adapter is not connected, more than one battery is installed or the battery is not installed correctly. Please follow the instructions in the Battery Check to correct the condition.
The Storage Capacity indicator provides the amount of storage capacity remaining in the battery. Over time, the storage capacity of a Lithium Ion battery will decay. The rate of decay depends on the usage of the battery. Every time the battery is charged and discharged the battery storage capacity is lowered, and the useful discharge time will become shorter. Eventually the battery will have to be replaced because the battery discharge time will be too short to be useful.
How do I know when to replace the battery?
The Battery Check utility will indicate when to replace your battery when an internal cell is not charging properly or when the storage capacity has reached a "Low" state. Instructions will be provided in the drop down message on where to purchase a replacement battery. A Warranty ID will be provided in the instructions if the battery is possibly covered by the HP Warranty.
NOTE:To assure you always have battery power when you need it, HP recommends purchasing a second battery when the storage capacity indicator turns Green-Yellow. The drop down message will provide instructions on where you can purchase a second battery for your notebook PC.
The Battery Check indicates the battery should be replaced. Is it covered under warranty?
As with all batteries, the maximum capacity of this battery will decrease with time or use. Loss of battery capacity will vary depending on the product configuration and usage, including but not limited to: product model, applications running, power management settings, and product features. The battery warranty does not cover natural deterioration of battery capacity. Your battery is only warranted from defects in materials or workmanship resulting in failure. To determine if your battery has had a warranted failure you may be required to run the HP Battery Check. If the Battery Check indicates the battery should replaced and a Warranty ID is provided in the instructions to contact HP, then the battery replacement may be covered under warranty.
NOTE:If there is a discrepancy around the warranty coverage on the battery, the proof of purchase of the PC or the battery will be required by HP to validate the warranty start date.
Why is the battery health "good" but the battery does not hold a charge?
There are two factors involved. The Battery Health indicator provides a check of the charge capability of the cells in the battery. The Storage Capacity indicator provides an accurate overall status of the cell storage capacity. Even though the cells in the battery can be charged, the storage capacity of the battery cells may have degraded. If the Storage Capacity is rated as Green or Green-Yellow, and the Health is rated as Good, the battery is operating as it was designed. How can I maximize the discharge time of the battery?
The discharge time will vary. It depends on the features you are using in your notebook PC during the time you are using the battery. For example, if you are playing a movie from DVD and you are connected to a wireless network, your battery life will be shorter than normal. If you are just reading or editing a file or answering email on a wired network connection, you will experience maximum battery life. Please note that your maximum discharge time will shorten as the storage capacity decays.
Tips for maximizing discharge time:
- Lower the brightness on the display.
- Check the Power Management settings are set to "Max Battery".
- Remove the battery from the notebook PC when it is not being used or charged for a long period
- Purchase another battery to extend the overall operating time on battery.
- Store the battery in a cool dry location.
Will the battery performance degrade over time?
The storage capacity of a notebook PC battery will degrade over time based upon notebook usage. Degradation is a normal condition of all rechargeable batteries and is not limited to notebook PCs or HP products. If the notebook is used on battery power often, requiring one or more recharges per day, the battery will experience a high degree of degradation and will need to be replaced sooner than a battery that is used occasionally. Also, temperature and humidity impact the storage capacity of a battery. It is best to store the battery and notebook in a cool dry place.
Under normal operating conditions, a battery should perform well for over a year, but it will hold less of a charge every time it is recharged. The HP Battery Check utility validates that every battery is operating normally by checking the condition of the cells of the battery. The Health status will change to "Replace" if the cells are not functioning normally.

How should I dispose of the battery I replace?
Lithium Ion batteries should never be sent to a land fill. Please see the HP Product Recycling Web site (in English) for options for disposing of a notebook PC battery. Also check your local area battery retailers for options they may provide.
Is the Battery Check accurate?
HP has tested the Battery Check on thousands of batteries and the check has proven to be over 99% accurate. If you feel the battery check is not correct, please contact HP to talk to a support specialist.
Why does the notebook PC need to be charging to check the status of the battery?
The HP Battery Check utility is an HP patent-pending battery diagnostic. It is over 99% accurate and takes less than a second to complete. For accuracy, it must check that all battery cells are charging properly. This can only be accomplished when the AC adapter is attached and charging the notebook PC battery.
How do I check the two batteries in my notebook?
If the notebook has multiple batteries, the batteries must be tested individually. For testing accuracy, the battery being checked must be receiving a change from an operating AC adapter. When two batteries are installed, the battery check can not determine which battery is being charged. To test multiple batteries:
- Remove one of the batteries and connect the AC Adapter to the PC.
- Allow the Battery Health check to update (5-10 seconds) and report the status of the first battery.
- Swap batteries to check the other battery.
Why did my battery not last 12 months?
Each time you charge or discharge a battery some of its life is used. The more often it is recharged and discharged, the faster the battery's useful life will degrade. To maximize the lifetime usefulness of your battery, charge it fully and remove it from the laptop when using A/C power. Only use the battery when A/C power is not available, and keep the battery stored in a cool dry place between uses.
