Error: PXE-E61: Media Test Failure

This document pertains to HP or Compaq desktop computers with Windows XP.
The following error message appears:
PXE-E61: Media Test Failure
This error is probably occurring because the main bootable hard drive is no longer "connected" to the computer and the next usable bootable device in the boot path is the network card. Use the following steps to resolve the error:
NOTE:If the computer was recently moved or bumped, make sure the hard drive cables are firmly attached to the motherboard and the hard drive before using the steps in this document.

Step 1: Remove all removable storage devices

Remove connected devices, remove power, and restart the computer:
  1. Disconnect any, personal media drives, pocket media drives, USB or 1394 (Firewire) devices that are attached to the computer, especially USB thumb drives.
  2. Remove any CD and DVD discs from their drives.
  3. If the computer has a floppy disk drive, remove any floppy disks from the drive.
  4. Press and hold the Power button for 5 Seconds to turn off the computer.
  5. Disconnect the power cable to the computer.
  6. With the power cable disconnected, press the power button again for five seconds. This may reset the firmware for the hard drive to its defaults .
  7. Plug in the power cable only and turn on the computer.
  8. If the error persists, go to the next step.
    If the computer starts without the error, one of the removable storage volumes may be preventing the computer from starting or the hard drive was not reponding. Do not leave the removable device in the computer when shutting the computer off. You are done.

Step 2: Make sure a network device is not selected as the first boot device in BIOS

The computer may be attempting to boot from the network device.
  1. Turn on the computer by pressing the power button on the PC and press the F1 key repeatedly when the first screen opens.
  2. Use the arrow keys to select the BOOT screen (from the menu at the top of the screen).
  3. Use the arrow keys to select the BOOT Device Priority (or similar).
  4. Press Enter.
  5. Read the instructions on the page to move any reference to a netwrok device to the bottom of the list. You should also move the optical drive (ODD) to the top of the list.
  6. Once the selections have been made, press F10 to Save settings and exit.

Step 3: Test the Hard Drive

Test the hard drive using the SMART hard drive test:
  1. Press and hold the Power button for 5 Seconds to turn off the computer.
  2. Press the F1 key repeatedly after the computer is turned on. A BIOS setup utility should appear.
  3. After the BIOS Setup Utility is displayed, use the Down Arrow key to select the hard disk drive name and press Enter.
  4. Select SMART Extended Self-Test, press Enter, and wait for the test to complete.
  5. If the test fails, the hard drive should be replaced.
    If the test passes, go to the next step to update the BIOS.

Step 4: Update the BIOS

Download and install the latest BIOS for your computer . If, after updating the BIOS and restarting the computer, the error goes away, you are done. If the error persists or a BIOS update is unavailable, go to the next step to recover the computer.

Step 5: Recover the operating system

To reinstall the Windows XP operating system, perform a system recovery (or reinstall Windows if the computer was upgraded to XP). You may need to start the computer from a set of recovery discs (or from a Windows Installation disc if Windows was upgraded to XP). Step 6: Repair the computer

If the preceding steps do not resolve the error, the hard drive or BIOS may have failed and the computer should be serviced.
