Using HP Update

This document is for HP printers and HP PCs.
HP Update provides an automated way to keep your HP computer and printer software current. This document explains how to use HP Update, and answers frequently asked questions about HP Update.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of HP Update

Go to the HP Update Software Utility website to install the latest version of the software. HP Update works with Windows operating systems.

Step 2: Run HP Update and check for updates

Select your operating system, and then follow these steps to open HP Update and check for updates.
  1. Open HP Update.
    • Windows 8
      Press the Windows () + Q keys, type HP Update into the Search field, and then click HP Update from the list of results.
    • Windows 7/Vista
      Click Start (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
    • Windows XP
      Click Start, click All Programs, click the HP folder, and then click HP Software Update.
    The Welcome to HP Update window opens.
  2. In the Welcome to HP Update window, click Next.

    HP Update checks for the latest updates.
    If new updates are available, make sure the check box next to each update is selected, and then click Next to begin downloading and installing the updates.
    If no updates are available, click Finish.

Step 3: Adjust HP Update settings

HP recommends that HP Update automatically checks for updates and notifies you only when an update is available. Select your operating system, and then follow these steps to receive notifications and adjust how often HP Update automatically checks for new updates.
  1. Open HP Update.
    • Windows 8
      Press the Windows () + Q keys, type HP Update into the Search field, and then click HP Update from the list of results.
    • Windows 7/Vista
      Click Start (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
    • Windows XP
      Click Start, click All Programs, click the HP folder, and then click HP Software Update.
  2. In the HP Update window, click Settings.

    • If you want HP Update to automatically check for updates, click Automatically check the web for updates. Only notify me when an update is available.
    • If you want to schedule updates, click Every, and then select the desired frequency from the drop-down list.
    HP Update should be set to check for updates every week. It is not recommended to turn off HP Update checks.
  3. Click OK.
    NOTE:HP Update always notifies you before downloading and installing updates.

Review this list of frequently asked questions to get answers about HP Update.
HP Update takes an inventory of the HP software that is installed on your computer and checks an HP Internet server to see if newer versions of each software exists. After checking, it displays a list of only those updates needed for your computer or printer. You can then choose to install some or all of those updates.
HP Update proactively offers software, hardware, driver, and firmware updates as they become available. Having the most current version of software can result in better product performance, product enhancements, and a more secure operating environment.
Depending on your settings, an HP Update window will either display before the program checks for updates or after it finds needed updates. In either case, click Continue in this window to open HP Update and install new updates.
HP Update is for software provided by HP or software used to support HP products. While HP Update is a very useful update tool, not all updates are made available through HP Update. To see all updates that are available, visit HP Software Downloads .
If you do not want the HP Updates window to open automatically and download updates, select your operating system, and then follow these steps to turn off HP Updates.
  1. Open HP Update.
    • Windows 8
      Press the Windows () + Q keys, type HP Update into the Search field, and then click HP Update from the list of results.
    • Windows 7/Vista
      Click Start (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
    • Windows XP
      Click Start, click All Programs, click the HP folder, and then click HP Software Update.
  2. In the HP Update window, click Settings.
    The HP Update Settings window displays.
  3. In the Check for software updates on the web section, select Never.

  4. Click OK.
If the HP Update window is cut off at the bottom of the screen, you can try the following tips to troubleshoot the issue.
  • If you have Windows Vista, right-click above the Software Update message (over the Windows desktop) to close the Windows sidebar, and then select Close Sidebar.
    You can open Windows Sidebar again from the tray icon or Start menu.
  • Temporarily set the display resolution to 1024x768 or higher to see if the problem is related to the display resolution.
  • De-select Keep the taskbar on top of other windows from taskbar properties in Windows.
  • Change DPI Scaling to default (96dpi).
    Select your operating system, and then follow these steps to change the dpi scaling to the default settings.
    • Windows 8
      1. Press the Windows () + Q keys.
      2. Type Control Panel into the Search field.
      3. Click Control Panel from the list of results.
      4. Click Display.
      5. Under Change the size of all items, click and drag the slider towards Smaller until it stops.
      6. Click Apply.
      7. Close the window, and then restart your computer.
      When your computer restarts, the HP Advisor and HP Update windows display properly.
    • Windows 7
      1. Click Start (), and then click Control Panel.
      2. Click Appearance and Personalization, and then click Display.
      3. Click Smaller - 100% default, and then click Apply.
      4. Close the window and restart your computer.
      When your computer restarts, the HP Advisor and HP Update windows display properly.
    • Windows Vista
      1. Click Start (), and then click Control Panel.
      2. Click Appearance and Personalization, and then click Personalization.
      3. Click Adjust font size (DPI) in the left column.
      4. Click Default scale (96) DPI - fit more information, and then click OK.
      5. Click Restart Now.
      When your computer restarts, the HP Advisor and HP Update windows display properly.
    • Windows XP
      1. Right-click an open area of the desktop, and then select Properties.
        A Display Properties window opens.
      2. Click the Settings tab, and then click Advanced.
        An Advanced Settings window opens.
      3. On the General tab, select Normal size (96 DPI) from the drop-down list, and then click OK.
      The HP Advisor and HP Update window display properly.
If HP Update fails and an error code displays, read the error code that displays in the message and refer to the following list for further information.
Error code 9994, 9995, 9996
You do not need to install the update for one or more of the following reasons:
  • The update requires certain hardware or software that is not installed on your computer (examples: keyboard replaced with a non-HP keyboard or Microsoft .NET software is not installed).
  • The computer does not meet a certain minimum hardware or software requirement (examples: 4 GB minimum memory, 200 MB free disk space, or .NET version 2.0 required and 1.0 is installed).
  • The same or newer version of software is already installed (computer already has the updated software).
  • The update is not needed for your computer.
Error code 9997 or 9998.
Yes. HP has completed extensive evaluation and testing to make sure that HP Update meets or exceeds all security standards.
CAUTION: If a computer that is not running the latest version of HP Update accesses a website running malicious code, a security vulnerability allows the registry to be manipulated. Download and install the latest version of HP Update to avoid any potential security threats.
HP Update scans the computer for installed HP software and products and uses this information to determine if any updates are available for the HP software on your system. The IP address of your computer is used only to transmit this data. HP Update does not create a unique identifier that can be used to identify the computer. HP Update does not collect your name, address, email address, or other forms of personally identifiable information.

  1. Open HP Update.
    • Windows 8
      Press the Windows () + Q keys, type HP Update into the Search field, and then click HP Update from the list of results.
    • Windows 7/Vista
      Click Start (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
    • Windows XP
      Click Start, click All Programs, click the HP folder, and then click HP Software Update.
    The HP Update window displays.
  2. Click Help, and then click HP Update Privacy Statement.
