An Alignment Page Prints Every Time that the All-in-One is Turned On or Off or a Print Job is Started

  • PrintPrint

Issue

A cartridge alignment page prints every time you turn the product on or off, or start a print job.

Solution

To ensure the highest-quality prints, the product performs an automatic alignment process when you setup the product for the first time, and when you replace the cartridges as part of normal maintenance. The product prints an alignment page during this alignment process. You must complete the full alignment process or the product continues to print an alignment page each time you turn the product on or off, or start a print job.
Follow these steps to resolve the issue.

Step one: Complete the alignment process

Follow these steps to complete the alignment process.
  1. Make sure the product is loaded with plain, white, letter or A4 sized paper that has no other printing on it.
  2. Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
  3. Wait for 30 seconds.
  4. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
The cartridge alignment process begins within 20 seconds.
  5. Wait for the cartridge alignment process to fully complete. This might take a few minutes. The process completes when the alignment page prints and the product is idle and silent.
  6. Turn off the product, and then turn the product back on.
    • If an alignment page does not print when you turn on the product, the issue is resolved.
    • If an alignment page continues to print when you turn on the product, continue to Step two: Remove, inspect, and reseat the cartridges.

Step two: Remove, inspect, and reseat the cartridges

The cartridges might not have full electrical contact with the product. Follow the steps below to remove, inspect, and reseat the cartridges to make sure they are correctly installed.
NOTE:HP cannot guarantee the quality of remanufactured or refilled cartridges.
  1. Make sure the product is on. The Power button () is lit when the product is on.

  2. Load letter or A4 sized unused, plain white paper in the tray.
  3. Lower the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the right side.

  4. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent.
  5. Use your thumb to press down on one of the cartridges to release it, and then pull the cartridge toward you and out of its slot.
CAUTION:Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or nozzles. If you touch these parts, it might result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.
  6. Inspect the cartridge:
    • Check the electrical contacts for debris.
    • Make sure no protective tape remains over the nozzles.

  7. To replace the cartridge, slide it forward into the empty slot, and then gently push on the upper part of the cartridge until it clicks into place.
  8. Close the cartridge access door.

The cartridge alignment process starts within 20 seconds.
    • If an alignment page does not print, the issue is resolved.
    • If an alignment page continues to print, continue to Step three: Clean the cartridge contacts.

Step three: Clean the cartridge contacts

Follow these steps to clean the cartridge contacts.
  1. Gather the following items:
    • Clean, distilled water. Use bottled water if you cannot use distilled water.
CAUTION:Do not use tap water. Tap water might contain contaminants that might damage the cartridge.
    • Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that do not stick to the cartridges (coffee filters work well).
    • Clean sheets of paper or paper towels on which to rest the cartridge while cleaning.
  2. Place the cartridge on a clean sheet of paper with the cartridge nozzles facing up.
  3. Disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet.
  4. Clean the cartridge contacts.
    1. Dip a swab in the distilled or bottled water, and then squeeze the excess water from it.
    2. Hold the cartridge by its sides, and then clean the copper-colored contacts only. Do not touch or clean the nozzles.

    3. Allow ten minutes for the contacts to dry, and then reinstall the cartridges.
  6. Close the cartridge access door, and then reconnect the power cord.
  7. Press the Power button () to turn on the product. The cartridge alignment process starts within 20 seconds.
    • If an alignment page does not print, the issue is resolved.
    • If an alignment page continues to print, continue to Step four: Install new cartridges.

Step four: Install new cartridges

HP recommends that you use genuine HP cartridges. HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP cartridges or refilled HP cartridges. If you do not use genuine HP cartridges, the following solutions might not resolve your print quality issue.
If the current cartridges are not genuine HP cartridges, or if you believe they are defective, HP suggests you replace them. Follow these steps to install a new cartridge.
  1. Remove the new cartridge from its packaging, and then pull the pink pull tab to remove the plastic tape.
CAUTION:Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or nozzles. If you touch these parts, it might result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

The cartridge alignment process starts within 20 seconds.
    • If an alignment page does not print, the issue is resolved.
    • If an alignment page continues to print, continue to Step five: Reset the product.

Step five: Reset and relocate the product

A power reset drains power from the product and returns the product to the same settings after restarting. To eliminate any potential power deficiencies which might hinder a successful alignment, HP suggest you move the product to another location and plug the product directly into a wall outlet. Follow these steps to reset and relocate the product.
  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  2. With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
  3. Relocate the printer to a different power outlet, preferably an outlet in a different room.
  4. Plug the power cord directly into the wall outlet. Do not use a power strip.
CAUTION:Do not reconnect the power cord to the back of the product at this time.
  5. Load letter or A4 sized unused, plain white paper in the tray.
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the back of the product.
  7. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
The cartridge alignment process starts within 20 seconds.
    • If an alignment page does not print, the issue is resolved.
    • If an alignment page continues to print, continue to Step six: Service the product

Step six: Service the product

Contacting HP for service in all countries/regions except Asia Pacific.
If you have completed all the preceding steps and are still experiencing a problem, service the product.

  • If your product is in warranty, Contact HP to obtain service.
  • If your product is out of warranty, Contact HP to find an authorized service provider or to setup service (fees might apply).

Cause

The product aligns the cartridges each time you install or replace the cartridges. The alignment page continues to print when you turn the product on or off, or when you start a print job, for any of the reasons below:
  • The automatic alignment process is not complete.
  • The cartridges are not correctly installed.
  • One of the cartridges is defective.
  • One of the cartridges is low or out of ink. Black and all three colors must be available.
  • The new cartridge still has some of the protective tape on it.
  • The contacts on the cartridge do not correctly meet the contacts in the carriage.
  • The cartridge is remanufactured or refilled. Refilled or remanufactured ink cartridges might be damaged during the refilling process or have clogged ink nozzles.
  • The product needs to be serviced.
