Aligning Cartridges

Introduction

Aligning the cartridges is necessary to obtain the best possible printing performance. The product allows for aligning the cartridges using either the control panel of the product or HP software.
Aligning the cartridges requires the product to print an alignment page. The format of the alignment page might vary by model.

NOTE: Printing unnecessary alignment pages shortens cartridge life. Print alignment pages sparingly.

Aligning cartridges

Use one of the following methods to align the cartridges.

Method one: Print an alignment page using the All-in-One control panel

NOTE:This video shows the HP Officejet J4580 All-in-One printer. The outside of the printer might not look the same as your printer, but the steps are the same.

  1. Make sure letter or A4, unused white paper is loaded in the input tray.
    NOTE:If colored paper is loaded in the input tray when aligning the cartridges, then the alignment will fail. Load unused plain white paper into the input tray, and then try the alignment again.
  2. Press the Setup button ( ) on the control panel of the product.
  3. Press the right arrow button ( ) to select Tools , and then press OK .
  4. Press the right arrow button ( ) to select Align Cartridge , and then press OK . The All-in-One prints a cartridge alignment sheet.
  5. Load the cartridge alignment sheet face down on the scanner glass in the right-front corner with the top of the page to the right.

  6. Close the scanner lid, and then press OK . The All-in-One aligns the cartridges.
  7. Recycle or discard the cartridge alignment page.
NOTE:The All-in-One prompts you to align the cartridges every time you install a new cartridge.

Method two: Print an alignment page using the computer

  1. Make sure letter or A4, unused white paper is loaded in the input tray.
    NOTE:If colored paper is loaded in the input tray when you align the cartridges, then the alignment fails. Load unused plain white paper into the input tray, and then try the alignment again.
  2. Open the Printer Toolbox .
    1. Open HP Solution Center .
    2. Click Settings .
    3. Click Printer Toolbox .
  3. Click the Device Services tab, and then click Align the Print Cartridges . The product prints a print cartridge alignment page.
  4. Lift the scanner lid.
  5. Load the cartridge alignment page face down on the scanner glass in the right-front corner with the top of the page to the right.

  6. Lower the scanner lid, and then press OK . The All-in-One aligns the print cartridges.
  7. Recycle or discard the print cartridge alignment page.
