HP BIOS application selected is corrupt or missing

This document pertains to HP PCs with the HP Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) beginning in late 2008.
During the startup process, the system performs a checksum test of the BIOS. If the checksum is incorrect, the BIOS is assumed to be corrupt and the system will install a hidden copy of the BIOS to correct the problem, and the startup process continues. The following message will be displayed for 15 seconds before the computer automatically reboots. You have the option of pressing Enter to proceed without waiting 15 seconds.
The CMOS checksum is invalid.
The CMOS will be reset to the default configuration and will be rebooted.
Please check your BIOS Setup options to see if they changed.

After the computer starts, a second message is displayed to indicate that the BIOS has been reset. This is an informational message and no additional action is required. However, if this error occurs more than once, there may be an issue with the installed version of the BIOS, and you should install an updated BIOS.

Run HP Support Assistant

To resolve a BIOS error, you should run HP Support Assistant to check the computer for the latest BIOS and other issues.
  • Go to the www.hp.com/go/helpandsupport Web page to download and install the latest version of HP Support Assistant.
  • Open HP Support Assistant.
  • Run a tune-up:
    • On computers running Windows 8, click Updates and tune-ups, and then click Tune-up in the left navigation panel. Under Change tune-up tasks, toggle each of the buttons to Yes, and then click Start tune-up now. Complete all recommended actions.
    • On computers running Windows 7 or Vista, click Maintain, click Tune up, click Tune up now or Start tune-up, and then click Start now. Complete all recommended actions.

Install an updated BIOS

To resolve a BIOS issue, you should install the latest BIOS for your computer. See Downloading or Updating Software and Drivers for HP Computers for more information.
