How do I change my default email program from Windows Mail to something else; such as MSN, Yahoo Mail, or Gmail?

Email programs such as MSN, Yahoo Mail, Gmail, and other Web-based email programs cannot easily be configured as a default email application. The email messages of these applications are read using a Web browser (such as Internet Explorer or Firefox) or with a mail reader program such as Windows Live Mail.
Windows Live Mail is a new email reader from Microsoft that has the capability of reading mail from multiple accounts, including MSN, Yahoo Mail, and Gmail. For more information about obtaining Live Mail for free and how to use Live Mail, go to the Microsoft Web page Windows Live Mail (in English). After downloading Live Mail, you can make it your default email program.
To make Windows Live Mail the default email program:
  1. Click Start , Default Programs. Then click Set program access and computer defaults.
  2. If prompted, enter your administrator password.
  3. Click Custom under Choose a configuration.
  4. Select Windows Live Mail under Choose a default email program.

How do I set up an email account in Windows Mail?

Windows Mail does not support Web-based (HTTP) email; such as MSN, Yahoo Mail, or Gmail.
Windows mail supports the following email protocols:
  • Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3)
  • Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP)
  • Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)
For detailed instructions on how to set up Windows Mail, see Setting Up Windows Mail (Vista) .

How do I transfer my Outlook mail to Windows Mail?

Microsoft Outlook mail is not compatible with Windows Mail. To transfer Outlook mail files to Windows Mail, Outlook mail must be imported from Outlook to Outlook Express (which formats email differently than Outlook). Then the newly formatted Outlook Express mail can be imported to Windows mail.
The procedures for obtaining a copy of Outlook Express, exporting Outlook files to Outlook Express, and for exporting Outlook contacts to Outlook Express are detailed at: Windows Vista Mail Cannot Read Outlook Files .

What does Microsoft recommend?

Microsoft recommends Windows Live Mail for most Windows Vista users. See the Microsoft Help and How-to page: So long Outlook Express! (in English).
Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail have differences between them. For details, see the Microsoft Help and How-to page: Working with Windows Mail (in English).
