Using the HP TouchSmart Software (Windows 7)

This information applies to some HP computers sold in the United States, such as HP Touch 300 and 600 series computers and some IQ500 and IQ800 products that were upgraded to Windows 7. Not all computers sold in the United States can use the Hulu software application.

UPDATING TOUCHSMART

Did you know HP updates its TouchSmart software to add new features and tools? To get the latest features, update the TouchSmart software from the Internet. Go to the HP software and drivers Web site , and type the model of your computer, such as Touch 600-1055. Select your Windows version, and under Software - Solutions , find the HP TouchSmart Application Update . Read the instructions on the Web page to download and install the update.
NOTE:To find the model number for your computer, press the Ctrl + Alt + S keys on the keyboard. A window displays your computer information including the model number.

Use one of the following methods to open the HP TouchSmart software:
  • Press the HP TouchSmart button on the lower-right side of the computer.
  • Double-tap the HP TouchSmart shortcut icon on the computer desktop.

  • Click or tap Start , and then click or tap HP TouchSmart .

Navigating in HP TouchSmart

You can use touch, a stylus (purchased separately), or the wireless keyboard and mouse to select items in the HP TouchSmart software. The HP TouchSmart 3.0 Ultimate software suite offers easy access to your photos, videos, music, the Internet, and other software programs on the HP Touch PC. You can use touch, or the wireless keyboard and mouse to select and deselect, sort, and move items in HP TouchSmart. There is also an onscreen keyboard or Windows Touch Input Panel that enables you to enter text by using touch.
CAUTION:Because the HP Touch screen uses a sensitive touch technology, to avoid damaging the touch screen, do not press on the front of the display bezel or around the screen borders.To achieve the best touch sensitivity, keep the screen clean from foreign objects. Avoid excessive dust accumulation on all sides of the screen. Keep the HP Touch screen surface clean.
There are several ways you can use software programs from within the TouchSmart software.
  • Tap the House icon to go back to the HP TouchSmart homepage.
  • Tap Close or Minimize to exit or minimize HP TouchSmart and return to the Windows desktop.
  • Tap the Back Arrow to return to the previous window.
  • Tap Personalize to change the setting on your HP TouchSmart homepage.
  • Tap Play , Pause , Skip , or Back to listen to music. Tap the Speaker icon to control the volume.
  • To scroll left and right, or up and down, touch and drag your finger across the screen in the direction you want to scroll, and then stop before lifting.
  • To scroll in the top row, touch anywhere on the transparent border of the tiles and drag your finger across the screen in the direction you want to scroll, and then stop before lifting. For more control while scrolling, keep your finger in contact with the screen.
    To move faster, drag your finger and lift it at the end.
    NOTE:If you touch the center of the tile instead of the border, you interact with the item instead of scrolling.

  • To open a tile to full screen mode, tap it once anywhere in the border area.
  • Tile View browsing - drag your finger across the tiles to browse through them, and then tap a tile to open it.

  • Fan View browsing (photos, music, and videos) - tap the Fan icon in the bottom-right corner to select the Fan View, drag the fan left or right, and then tap an item to open it.

  • Two-touch folder preview - press and drag in the row using two fingers to expand folders to a nine-square preview in the Photo, Music, and Video modules.

Personalizing your TouchSmart software

When the HP TouchSmart software is opened, you see large and small tiles which are shortcuts to other TouchSmart features and various software programs and files. The large tiles in the top row are running and are active. The small tiles in the bottom row are not running. Use the upper, large tile area for software programs you use the most often. Use the lower, small tile area to store the rest of your program shortcuts.
If you have several programs open, you can scroll to see and interact with all of them in the TouchSmart Homepage view.

Moving tiles

To move a tile to the bottom row, drag straight down. If you drag at an angle, the tiles in the top roll scroll. When you are dragging a tile, you can see the icon and a blue line where the icon will be placed.
NOTE:When you move a tile to the bottom row, it turns off except for the Music tile. If you are playing music, it continues to play, even when you drag it to the bottom row.
Drag straight up to move an icon from the bottom row to the top row.
To change the order of the top tiles, move the tile to the bottom row, scroll the top row to the location where you want the tile to go, and then drag it there.

NOTE:Active programs use computer resources. Keep only the programs you are using in the top row and drag the others to the bottom row.

Choosing a background

You can select a background image to display on the TouchSmart home page.
  • To add more background images, copy them to the HP TouchSmart folder found in the Public Pictures folder.
  • Supports .jpg and .png file types
  • Images that have a 16:10 or 16:9 aspect ratio display the best.
  • Some images might be cropped when selected as the background.
To set a Desktop background:
  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Personalize button.
  2. Tap Choose Background .
  3. Select an image to use for the background image.

  4. Tap Preview to see how the background will look. Tap the X in the upper-right corner to close the preview.
  5. Tap Done to apply the background.
  6. To return to the default background, tap Use Desktop Background .

Creating a new program tile

Use the following steps to create a new program tile:
  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Personalize button.
  2. Select Create a new tile .
  3. Tap Windows Program . A list displays that contains the programs from All Programs in the Windows Start Menu.

  4. Select the program you want to add and then tap OK .

  5. Click Done to return to the TouchSmart home page.
    Your Web site link displays in the small tile area on the bottom of the HP TouchSmart homepage.

Adding a Website tile

Use the following steps to add a Website tile:
  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Personalize button.
  2. Select Create a new tile .
  3. Select Website . A list displays that contains the Internet Explorer favorites.

  4. Select a Web site from the list or type in the URL for the Web site, starting with www or http:// (for example, www.hp.com/go/touchsmart).
  5. Tap OK , and then tap Done to return to the HP TouchSmart homepage.
    Your Web site link displays in the small tile area on the bottom of the HP TouchSmart homepage.

Deleting a tile

Use the following steps to delete a TouchSmart program tile:
  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Personalize button.
  2. Under the Manage My Tiles list, select a tile to delete, then tap Delete . Confirm Yes .
  3. Tap Done .
    The tile is removed from the Tile View. This does not delete your program, only the shortcut from the Tile View in HP TouchSmart.

Adding back a deleted TouchSmart program tile

Use the following steps to add back a deleted TouchSmart program tile:
  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Personalize button.
  2. Select Create a new tile .
  3. Select HP TouchSmart Program . A list displays that contains the deleted TouchSmart Program tiles.
  4. Select the program you want to add, tap OK , and then tap Done to return to the HP TouchSmart homepage.
    The tile is returned to the Tile View.

Changing a tile color

Use the following steps to change the color of a tile:
  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Personalize button.
  2. Under the Manage My Tiles list, select a tile to change.
  3. In the Choose a Color area, tap a color.

  4. Then tap Done to return to the HP TouchSmart homepage.

Browser

TouchSmart Browser is a simple viewer that allows you to monitor your favorite Web sites, download files, and search for information.

Calendar

TouchSmart Calendar is a shared calendar where you can manage your family’s schedule. You can also view scheduled events for today and tomorrow, e-mail calendar events with Google mail, and print your schedule.

Canvas

TouchSmart Canvas is a virtual interactive collage. Open the Canvas tile and create collages of photographs that you can share or use as a desktop background.

Clock

From the TouchSmart homepage, you can view up to three clocks in the large Clock tile, or you can view the main clock in the small tile.

DVD

Use TouchSmart DVD to watch your DVDs and Blu-ray discs (if the computer model includes a BD drive) from the TouchSmart Homepage.

Hulu

Using Hulu, you can watch TV shows, movies, and movie trailers from the TouchSmart Homepage. Hulu accounts are free.

Link

With TouchSmart Link, you can transfer photos from your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone to your HP Touch computer.

Music

With TouchSmart Music, you can use touch to quickly browse your music collection, play CDs, view song titles, view album art, and create playlists.

Netflix

Netflix is a way to watch movies instantly in TouchSmart after signing into a Netflix account. You must have an Internet connection, a Netflix (fee-based) subscription, and movies in your Netflix Instant Queue.

Notes

With TouchSmart Notes, you can create text and voice notes by using touch, mouse, keyboard, video, or by recording a voice note. You can also create to-do lists, and print your notes and lists.

Photo

With TouchSmart Photo, you can view, edit, and print your photos or upload them to Snapfish. You can also create and view slideshows, and then burn them to CD or DVD.

Recipe Box

Use TouchSmart Recipe Box to organize all your recipes in one place. You can add and edit recipes, organize them by category, and browse for a recipe on the Internet. The interactive voice command feature allows your Touch computer to dictate recipe ingredients and procedures while you cook.

Twitter

TouchSmart Twitter is a way to send short text messages to your friends and followers, and see comments and opinions from the Twitter community.

Video

With HP TouchSmart Video, you can capture your videos with the built-in webcam, play them back, burn them to DVD, create movies, and then upload them to YouTube.

Weather

Use TouchSmart Weather to get a two-day weather forecast (select models only).

Webcam

Your HP Touch computer comes with a built-in webcam and array microphones. You can use them to capture videos, and have video chats and conference calls by using instant messaging software.

Increasing TouchSmart software performance

The HP TouchSmart software performs better when there are less software programs open. Applications in the top row are running. Active applications are using computer resources so keep only the applications you are using on the top and drag the others to the bottom row.
Many software programs open when Windows opens - even if you do not use the software. You can prevent these software programs from opening by removing them from the startup folder or by using a software tool called MSConfig.
