Using the HP TouchSmart Webcam

This information applies to some HP computers sold in the United States, such as HP TouchSmart 300 and 600 series computers and some IQ500 and IQ800 products that were upgraded to Windows 7. Not all computers sold in the United States can use the Hulu software application.

UPDATING TOUCHSMART

Did you know HP updates its TouchSmart software to add new features and tools? To get the latest features, update the TouchSmart software from the Internet. Go to the HP software and drivers Web site , and type the model of your computer, such as TouchSmart 600-1055. Select your Windows version, and under Software - Solutions, find the HP TouchSmart Webcam Application Update. Read the instructions on the Web page to download and install the update.
NOTE:To find the model number for your computer, press the Ctrl + Alt + S keys on the keyboard. A window displays your computer information including the model number.

HP TouchSmart Webcam

Your HP TouchSmart computer comes with a built-in webcam and array microphones. You can use them to capture videos and have video chats and conference calls by using instant messaging software. You must download the instant messaging software of your choice; it is not included with HP TouchSmart.
The webcam and the microphones are located at the top center of the TouchSmart computer. You can adjust the webcam by using the adjustment lever on the back of the computer.
The optimal distance for recording sound with the array microphone is about two feet (one-half meter) away from the HP TouchSmart PC.

Opening HP TouchSmart Webcam

To open the TouchSmart Webcam, tap the Webcam tile on the HP TouchSmart homepage.

Creating videos with the webcam

Complete the following steps to create a video with the webcam:
  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Webcam tile.
  2. Tap the Capture button on the HP TouchSmart Webcam window. HP TouchSmart Webcam begins to capture the current webcam video.

  3. Add emotion and apply special effects to your webcam video such as frames, emotions, filters, and distortion.
    Emotion effects are added to the webcam video temporarily and disappear after a few seconds. All other effects, such as frames and filters, remain applied to your webcam image until you cancel them, or select another effect. To cancel the effect, tap it again to remove the selection, or use the Eraser tool .
  4. Tap the Stop button to stop capturing your video.
    Your video is displayed in the All Captured Content area.
  5. To review your video, tap it in the captured content area, and tap Play.

  6. Tap Close to keep the video, or Delete to discard it.
    NOTE:Your video is stored in the Webcam folder inside the Documents folder, and is named by the time and date it was recorded.

Taking a photo snapshot

Complete the following steps to take a photo snapshot:
  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Webcam tile.
  2. Add emotion and apply special effects for your photo such as frames and filters.
    Emotion effects are added to the webcam video temporarily and disappear after a few seconds. All other effects, such as frames and filters, remain applied to your webcam image until you cancel them, or select another effect. To cancel the effect, tap it again to remove the selection, or use the Eraser tool .
  3. Tap the Snapshot button. The picture displays in the All Captured Content area.
  4. Your photo displays in the All Captured Content area.
  5. To view your photo, tap it in the captured content area.
  6. Tap Close to keep the photo, or Delete to discard it.
    NOTE:Your photo is stored in the Webcam folder inside the Documents folder, and is named by the time and date it was recorded.

Taking a series of photos in quick succession

Complete the following steps to use the Burst feature to take a series of photos in quick succession:
  1. Open HP TouchSmart, and tap the Webcam tile.
  2. Add emotion and apply special effects for your photo such as frames and filters.
    Emotion effects are added to the webcam video temporarily and disappear after a few seconds. All other effects, such as frames and filters, remain applied to your webcam image until you cancel them, or select another effect. To cancel the effect, tap it again to remove the selection, or use the Eraser tool .
  3. Tap the Burst button in the HP TouchSmart Webcam window.
    HP TouchSmart Webcam takes several pictures in quick succession and your photos appear in the All Captured Content area.
    NOTE:The number of pictures taken with the Burst feature depends on the number specified in Snapshot Settings.
  4. To view a photo, tap it in the captured content area.
  5. Tap Close to keep the photo, or Delete to discard it.
    NOTE:Your photo is stored in the Webcam folder inside the Documents folder, and is named by the time and date it was recorded.

Using HP TouchSmart Webcam with instant messaging software

You can use HP TouchSmart Webcam with an instant messaging program, but you must first enable your software to work with HP TouchSmart Webcam. (Check your messaging program's instructions for steps.)
This example is for Windows Live Messenger.
  1. In the Windows Live Messenger main window, select Tools, and then select Audio and Video Setup.
  2. In Step 3 of the Audio and Video Setup wizard, select HP Web Camera Filter.

  3. Tap the Finish button to save your changes and enable HP TouchSmart Webcam.

Having a video chat or making conference calls

To set up a video chat, you must have a connection to the Internet, an ISP, and software that enables you to make video calls over the Internet. As with chat or instant messenger software, you can use this kind of software to chat with one or more people at a time. This software might require a separate subscription, and is not included with HP TouchSmart.
Before you can set up a video chat, you must do the following:
  1. Download an Internet messenger or video phone call program. Make sure the person you are calling has compatible video calling software.
  2. Enable your webcam as the default video input. This is usually done through the video setup in the software program Tools menu.
  3. Send your video call by following the instructions for the video calling software program.
To start a video chat in HP TouchSmart Webcam:
  1. Tap Start .
  2. Open the Internet messenger or video phone software program.
  3. Start a video call.
    For example, in Windows Live Messenger, click Action, Video, and then click Start a Video Call.
  4. Select an online contact and click OK.
  5. HP TouchSmart Webcam opens. When your online contact answers, begin your Video Call.
  6. To close the call, click Hang Up in the Internet messenger or video phone call program. Then close HP TouchSmart WebCam.

Using an avatar on your live webcam video

Avatars are character effects that use facial feature tracking to mimic your facial movements and actions. Use an avatar for a video chat session if you are camera shy, or if you want to record a video with different characters.
To use an avatar, use the following steps:
  1. Position your face in the center of the webcam preview window, and about 30 - 45 cm (12 to 18 in) away from the webcam.
    NOTE:A well-lit environment is required for the avatar effect to work correctly.
  2. Tap the Avatar tab.
  3. Select the desired avatar to turn it on.
  4. Hold your head still for about 5 seconds so the software can correctly calibrate and recognize your facial features.
  5. After the software has recognized your facial features, the avatar mimics many of your motions, such as eye blinks, winks, and head nods.

Enabling the on-hold picture

The on-hold picture feature allows you to substitute a static picture for a live webcam image when you are conducting a video call through an instant messenger or live video phone call program.
  1. Open the Internet messenger or video phone call program, and start a video call.
    HP TouchSmart Webcam opens.
  2. Tap the On hold button located at the far right of the effects button row, and select a picture to apply.

  3. To stop the on-hold picture and return to live webcam, show your Webcam in the Internet messenger or video phone call program.

Adjusting the microphone volume

To adjust the microphone volume, use the following steps:
  1. Right-click the Volume icon on the taskbar, and click Recording Devices.
  2. In Recording Devices, click Microphone, and then click Properties.

  3. In the Microphone Properties, click the Levels tab and move the slider to adjust the volume for the microphone.

Adjusting the webcam settings

Complete the following steps to adjust the webcam settings:
Tap Settings .
In the Capture settings, you can select the capture quality, choose whether to capture audio, and choose to use a 3-second delay before the webcam begins capturing video.

In the Display settings, you can adjust brightness and contrast, and access the Advanced Display settings.

In the Snapshot settings, you can set the number of snapshots the camera takes for the Burst feature, and adjust the shutter speed.

Using face tracking

The face tracking feature helps keep facial images centered and proportioned on the screen. To enable face tracking, tap Zoom, select Face tracking, and tap OK.
NOTE:It has been reported that lighting conditions can affect the performance of the face tracking feature. To improve performance of the face tracking feature try to increase the light to the face while decreasing the amount of light in the background. If the lighting conditions cannot be adjusted, select Disable zoom or Manual zoom instead.

Finding the Webcam version

To find the TouchSmart Webcam version, tap Settings , and then tap About.
