Printer Will Not Print After Upgrading to Windows 7

Issue

The solutions in this document address the issue of the product not printing after upgrading to Windows 7 from Windows Vista. The following symptoms might also accompany this issue, and this document does not address these other symptoms:
  • Printer will not print
  • Print jobs are stuck in the print queue
  • No response from product

Solution one: Use an automatic tool to remove the print driver

NOTE:Some of the following steps require you to restart the computer. Consider bookmarking this page on your Web browser, so that you can reference it after restarting the computer.
Follow these steps in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Step one: Uninstall the HP product

    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the back of the product.
      NOTE:Do not reconnect the USB cable until prompted to do so when you reinstall the software.
    2. On the taskbar, click the Windows icon (), and then click All Programs.
    3. Click HP, and then click the folder for your HP product.
    4. Click Uninstall, and then follow the on-screen instructions to remove your HP product.

    3. Click Uninstall, and then follow the on-screen instructions to remove your HP product.

Step two: Download and then use the Printer Driver Removal Utility

  1. Follow the on-screen instructions to save the software to your computer.
  2. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to run the utility and remove any print drivers on your computer.
  3. Continue to the next step.

Step three: Install the latest software from the HP website

  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. If the Welcome to HP Support page opens, follow these steps:
    1. In the Enter product name or number field, type your printer model or number.
    2. In the Questions or keywords field, type driver, and then press Enter.
      You might need to select your printer model number from a list of similar printer models.
    3. Next to the image of your printer, click the name of your printer.

    4. On the HP support site, click Drivers.
  4. Select your operating system, and then click Next.
    A list of drivers and other downloads display.
  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver - Product Installation Software.
  6. Click Download next to the full feature software and driver listed, and then follow the prompts to save the driver to your computer.
  7. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Remove the print drivers manually

Follow these steps in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Step one: Uninstall the HP product

    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the back of the product.
      NOTE:Do not reconnect the USB cable until prompted to do so when you reinstall the software.
    2. On the taskbar, click the Windows icon (), and then click All Programs.
    3. Click HP, and then click the folder for your HP product.
    4. Click Uninstall, and then follow the on-screen instructions to remove your HP product.

    3. Click Uninstall, and then follow the on-screen instructions to remove your HP product.

Step two: Remove the drivers and the driver package

  1. On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon ().
  2. In the Search programs and files text box, type print.
  3. In the window that opens, click Print Management. The Print Management window opens.
  4. In the left pane, double-click Print Servers, right-click the icon for your computer, and then click Properties. The Print Server Properties window opens.
    NOTE:This illustration might not look exactly like the window on your computer, but the instructions are the same.

  5. Click the Drivers tab, click to highlight the name of the HP product you want to remove, and then click Remove. The Remove Driver and Package window opens.
  6. Click Remove driver and driver package, and then click OK.

  7. When the driver removal completes, click Apply, and then restart your computer.

Step three: Install the latest software from the HP website

  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. If the Welcome to HP Support page opens, follow these steps:
    1. In the Enter product name or number field, type your printer model or number.
    2. In the Questions or keywords field, type driver, and then press Enter.
      You might need to select your printer model number from a list of similar printer models.
    3. Next to the image of your printer, click the name of your printer.

    4. On the HP support site, click Drivers.
  4. Select your operating system, and then click Next.

  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver - Product Installation Software.
  6. Click Download next to the full feature software and driver listed, and then follow the prompts to save the driver to your computer.
  7. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

Cause

When you installed the Windows 7 print driver for your product, the Windows 7 installer did not remove the Windows Vista print driver correctly. Windows 7 tries to use the Windows Vista print driver instead of the correct Windows 7 print driver, which causes this issue.
