'Paper Mismatch,' or 'Paper Size Mismatch' Error Message Displays When Printing Envelopes in Microsoft Word in Windows

Issue

When printing envelopes in Microsoft Word in Windows, a 'Paper Mismatch' or 'Paper Size Mismatch' error message occurs. This message might display on the product control panel or on the computer.
Try the following solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue. When one of the solutions resolves the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

Solution one: Resume the print job

Ignore the error and continue printing. The printout might still be acceptable even if the paper size and type settings are not an exact match.
  1. Press OK on the control panel to clear the error message.
  2. Try the print job again.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Adjust the print settings and envelope settings

Use the product software, also known as the printer driver, to change the print settings for your envelope size and type. Then, use the Envelopes and Labels tool in Microsoft Word to select your envelope size.

Step one: Adjust the print settings

  1. In Microsoft Word, click File , and then click Print .
  2. Make sure that your product is in the Name drop-down list box, and then click Properties .
  3. Click the Paper/Quality tab, and then click Advanced . The Advanced Options dialog box opens.
  4. Select an envelope size from the Paper Size drop-down list, and then click OK to close the Advanced Options dialog box.
  5. Follow these steps to select the desired paper type.
    1. From the Properties dialog box, make sure that the Paper/Quality tab is still selected.
    2. Select a paper type from the Media drop-down list, and then click OK to close the Properties dialog box.

Step two: Set the correct envelope size

Set the correct envelope size in the Envelopes and Labels dialog box before printing envelopes.
  1. In Microsoft Word, click Tools , click Letters and Mailings , and then click Envelopes and Labels .
  2. In the Envelopes and Labels dialog box, click the Envelopes tab.
  3. Click Options .
  4. From the Envelope size drop-down list, select the appropriate paper size.
  5. Click OK , and then click Close to close the Envelopes and Labels dialog box.
  6. Click File , and then click Print to print the envelope.
NOTE:When you finish printing the envelopes, return the paper size and the paper type settings to the defaults.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Disable the automatic paper type sensor

If you tried Solution one and Solution two and are still receiving an error message, disable the automatic paper type sensor.
  1. In Microsoft Word, click File , and then click Print .
  2. Make sure that your product is in the Name drop-down list box, and then click Properties .
  3. Click the Paper/Quality tab.
  4. Click the drop-down list under Media , and then select Plain paper .
  5. Click OK to close the Properties dialog box.
  6. In the Print dialog box, click OK to print the envelope.

Step two: Set the correct envelope size

  1. In Microsoft Word, click the Page layout tab. In the Size drop-down list, click the appropriate envelope size.
  2. Make sure that the selected envelope size matches the envelope size loaded in the product.
  3. In the Orientation drop-down list, click the appropriate orientation.
  4. Follow these steps to select the feed method:
    1. Click the Mailings tab, and then click Envelopes . The Envelope and Labels dialog box opens.
    2. Click the Envelopes tab.
    3. Type the delivery address in the Delivery address: text box.
    4. Type the return address in the Return address: text box.
    5. Double-click the Feed image ( ) and select the appropriate feed option.
    6. Click OK .
  5. Try the print job again.

Solution three: Disable the automatic paper type sensor

If you tried Solution one and Solution two and still receive a 'Paper Mismatch' error, disable the automatic paper type sensor.
  1. In Microsoft Word, click the Office button ( ), and then click Print .
  2. Make sure that your product is in the Name drop-down list box, and then click Properties .
  3. Click the Paper/Quality tab.
  4. Click the drop-down list under Media , and then select Plain paper .
  5. Click OK to close the Properties dialog box.
  6. In the Print dialog box, click OK to print the envelope.
Paper mismatch errors occur because the printer scans the width of the envelope before printing. If the paper size setting in the printer driver does not match the paper actually loaded in the printer, the printer reports a 'Paper Mismatch' error.
