Uninstalling the Printer Software

Introduction

This document provides instructions for removing the Basic Device Software and other HP software from a Windows or Mac computer. The required Basic Device Software and Product Help that you installed enable full printer functionality.
Important: If you are trying to resolve an issue or an error message, software or driver removal might not resolve the issue. Also, some issues require a more in-depth removal than this document covers. Unless you know that removing the software is the correct solution, search for help documents that pertain to your specific issue or error message.
The software that ships with the printer comes with the printer driver, and other HP software applications. Before you uninstall the HP software, consider whether you want to remove all of the software, or only certain applications.
Use the following table to review common software titles and their descriptions.

Uninstall HP printer software

Select your operating system for instructions on uninstalling HP software.
Click the plus sign () next to your operating system for more information.
Follow these steps to remove the HP print driver and software from a Windows XP computer.
Important: If your printer connects to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer now.

Step one: Uninstall the Basic Device Software

Follow these steps to remove the product driver from your computer.
  1. On the Windows task bar, click Start, and then click All Programs. A list of programs installed on your computer displays.
  2. Click the HP folder, and then click the folder with the name and model number of your HP product.
  3. Click Uninstall, and then follow the on-screen instructions. The Basic Device Software uninstalls.

Step two: Uninstall other HP software through the Windows Control Panel

Remove any additional HP software through the Windows Control Panel. Follow these steps to uninstall the software.
IMPORTANT: If you have multiple HP printers installed on your computer, some of the software components could be shared. Use caution if the uninstaller asks if you want to remove shared files. Other HP printers or software programs might not work correctly if you delete certain files.
  1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start, and then click Control Panel. The Windows Control Panel opens.
  2. Click Add or Remove Programs. A list of currently installed programs opens.
    NOTE:If you do not see any HP software in this list, there is no further software to remove from your computer.
  3. In the list of installed programs, click an HP software title, and then click Change/Remove or Remove. Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall the software.
  4. Disconnect the product from the power source, and then restart the computer.
Follow these steps to remove the HP print driver and software from a Windows Vista computer.
Important: If your printer connects to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer now.

Step one: Uninstall the Basic Device Software

Follow these steps to remove the product driver from your computer.
  1. Click the Windows icon (), and then click All Programs. A list of programs installed on your computer displays.
  2. Click the HP folder, and then click the folder with the name and model number of your HP product.
  3. Click Uninstall, and then follow the on-screen instructions. The Basic Device Software uninstalls.

Step two: Uninstall other HP software through the Windows Control Panel

Remove any additional software specific to your HP product through the Windows Uninstall a program feature. Follow these steps to uninstall the software.
IMPORTANT: If you have multiple HP printers installed on your computer, some of the software components could be shared. Use caution if the uninstaller asks if you want to remove shared files. Other HP printers or software programs might not work correctly if you delete certain files.
  1. On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon (), and then click Control Panel. The Windows Control Panel opens.
  2. Click Uninstall a program. A list of currently installed programs opens.
    NOTE:If you do not see any HP software in the list, there is no further software to remove from your computer.
  3. In the list of programs, click an HP software title, and then click Uninstall. Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall the software.
  4. Press the power button to turn off the HP product, and then unplug the product power cord from the wall outlet.
  5. Restart the computer.
Follow these steps to remove the HP print driver and software from a Windows 7 computer.
Important: If your printer connects to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer now.

Step one: Uninstall the Basic Device Software

Follow these steps to remove the product driver from your computer.

Follow these steps to remove the HP print driver and software from a Windows 8 computer.
NOTE:If you are not using the latest version of Windows 8, the information in this document might not match. You can get the latest version from the Microsoft Store.
Important: If your printer connects to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer now.

Step one: Uninstall the Basic Device Software

  1. Perform the following step for your connection type:
    • USB connection: If your printer connects to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the USB cable from the printer, and then disconnect the cable from the computer.
    • Network connection: If the printer is connected to the network through a wired (Ethernet) or wireless connection, disconnect the printer from the network.
      NOTE:If you plan to reinstall the printer software, leave the printer connected to the network.
  2. Right-click the Start button () in the lower left corner of the screen, click Search, and then type Devices and Printers.
  3. Click Devices and Printers.
  4. Right-click the icon for your printer, and then click Remove Device. The computer uninstalls the printer software.

Step two: Uninstall other HP software

Remove any additional software specific to your HP printer through the Windows Uninstall a program feature. Follow these steps to uninstall the software.
Important: If you have multiple HP printers installed on your computer, some of the software components might be shared among them. Use caution if the uninstaller asks if you want to remove shared files. Other HP printers or software programs might not work correctly if you delete certain files.
  1. Right-click or tap and hold the bottom left corner of the screen, and then click or tap Programs and Features. The Programs and Features window opens with a list of installed programs.
    NOTE:If you do not see any HP software in the list, there is no further software to remove from your computer.
  2. In the list of programs, click or tap an HP software title, click or tap Uninstall, and then click or tap Yes. Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall the software.
  3. Repeat the preceding step to remove other HP software titles.
  4. Press the Power button () to turn off the HP printer, and then unplug the printer's power cord from the wall outlet.
  5. Restart the computer.
Follow these steps to manually uninstall the HP software.
  1. From the computer desktop, double-click the Macintosh HD, and then click Applications.
  2. Click the Hewlett-Packard folder.
  3. Double-click the HP Uninstaller, and then click Continue.
  4. Select the product to uninstall, and then click Uninstall.
  5. When prompted, type the Administrator name and Password, and then click OK.
  6. From the Macintosh HD menu, click Users.
  7. Click the correct user name.
  8. Click Library.
  9. Click Preferences.
  10. Click and hold the cursor on the first file that starts with "HP," and then drag the file to the Trash icon on the taskbar. Complete this step for each file that starts with "HP."
  11. Close out of Preferences.
  12. Click the Trash icon on the taskbar, click the Empty button, and then click OK to empty the trash.
    NOTE:By clicking OK, all items in your trash will be permanently deleted from your computer. To delete one item in the trash, click that item to highlight it, and then click OK.
Choose the method you originally used to install the printer software, and then follow the steps to remove the print driver and other software from a computer with Mac OS X v10.6, OS X v10.7, OS X v10.8, or OS X v10.9.
    1. From the computer desktop, double-click the Macintosh HD, and then click Applications.
    2. Click the Hewlett-Packard folder.
    3. Double-click the HP Uninstaller, and then click Continue.
    4. Select the product to uninstall, and then click Uninstall.
    5. When prompted, type the Administrator name and Password, and then click OK.
    6. From the Macintosh HD menu, click Users.
    7. Click the correct user name.
    8. Click Library.
    9. Click Preferences.
    10. Click and hold the cursor on the first file that starts with "HP," and then drag the file to the Trash icon on the taskbar. Complete this step for each file that starts with "HP."
    11. Close out of Preferences.
    12. Click the Trash icon on the taskbar, click the Empty button, and then click OK to empty the trash.
      NOTE:By clicking OK, all items in your trash will be permanently deleted from your computer. To delete one item in the trash, click that item to highlight it, and then click OK.
    1. From the computer desktop, double-click the Macintosh HD icon.
    2. Double-click the Library folder.
    3. Double-click the Printers folder.
    4. Right-click the HP folder, and then select Move to Trash.
    5. When prompted, type the Administrator name and Password for the computer, and then click OK. Wait for authentication to complete.
    6. Double-click the PPDs folder.
    7. Double-click the Contents folder.
    8. Double-click the Resources folder.
    9. Find you product in the product list, and then right-click on your product and select Move to Trash.
    10. When prompted, type the Administrator name and Password for the computer, and then click OK. Wait for authentication to complete.
    11. Click the Trash icon on the taskbar, click the Empty button, and then click OK to empty the trash.
      NOTE:By clicking OK, all items in your trash will be permanently deleted from your computer. To delete one item in the trash, click that item to highlight it, and then click OK.
    12. On the upper-left corner of the computer desktop, click the Apple menu icon (), and then click System Preferences on the drop-down menu.
    13. Click Print & Fax.
    14. In the Printers list, click your HP product, and then click the Minus button () to delete it.
