Information

Edge synchronization failing with event ID: 1024, 1036, and 1004 which is causing mail flow issue.
Log Name: Application
Source: MSExchange EdgeSync
Event ID: 1024
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic
Computer: HOSTNAME.ADDomain.local
Description: Failed to connect to the ADAM instance on Edge Transport server with the exception "The Supplied credential is invalid." . This may be due to a failure to resolve the name of the Edge Transport server in DNS HOSTNAME.ADDomain.local, an error 50636 when trying to connect to the Edge Transport server HOSTNAME.ADDomain.local, problem of network connectivity, an invalid certificate, or an expired subscription. Check the configuration of server and network.
Log Name: Application
Source: MSExchange EdgeSync
Event ID: 1036
Level: Error
Computer: HOSTNAME.ADDomain.local
Description: Microsoft Exchange could not connect to HOSTNAME.ADDomain.local with credentials ESRA.hostname.Hostname.0 cn =, CN = Services, CN = Configuration, CN = {79E3FE64-B4B8-49ED-A4E3-406593E5FA49} . The password hash is a7LRqj ZGzgLqDLS9pJXrMVLNkBQlQ9yRryBAxo/so +3 =. The cause is a replication account expired. Re-subscribe the Edge Transport server by running the command again in the New-EdgeSubscription Edge Transport server and HOSTNAME.ADDomain.local on this server. No need to run the Remove-EdgeSubscription.

Message: The Microsoft Exchange EdgeSync service could not confirm the credential for replication account %1 for the subscribed server %2. The start date is %3. The password hash is %4. Verify that the Microsoft Exchange Credential Service is running properly on the subscribed server.

Details

Starting the Microsoft Exchange Credential Service (EdgeCredentialSvc) on the target Edge Transport server stopped the above said events.

Explanation:
This error event indicates that the Microsoft Exchange EdgeSync service did not validate the future replication account credentials that are required to replicate Active Directory data to the Edge Transport server. The replication account and the target Edge Transport server are specified in the event description.
This error event does not indicate that the replication account credentials that are currently being used are invalid. Instead, it indicates that the set of replication credentials that must be used next is not valid. EdgeSync performs this proactive check to verify that it can log on with the new credentials 15 days before the Edge Transport server will switch to the new credentials.
What is this Microsoft Exchange Credential Service?
This service is installed on Edge Server. It is required service which should be running all the time and it is dependent on Microsoft Exchange ADAM.
Who is responsible for this service: "EdgeCredentialSvc.exe".
Path from where it is executed: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Bin\EdgeCredentialSvc.exe".
The Edge Credential service is part of the Edge Subscription process. It runs only on the Edge Transport server. This service creates the reciprocal ESRA accounts in ADAM so that a Hub Transport server can authenticate to an Edge Transport server to perform EdgeSync synchronization. The Microsoft Exchange EdgeSync service does not communicate directly with the Edge Credential service. The Edge Credential service communicates with ADAM and installs the ESRA credentials whenever the Hub Transport server updates them.
Functions:
  • It keeps the track of any credential changes on ADAM.
  • It will update the credential changes on Edge Transport.
