An 'Alignment page not detected' or 'Alignment failed' Message Displays on the All-in-One

Issue

An 'Alignment page not detected ' or 'Alignment failed ' message displays on the product control panel when aligning cartridges.
Try the following solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue. When one of the solutions resolves the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

Solution one: Make sure that the paper type is appropriate and then reload the paper

Follow these steps to make sure that the paper type is appropriate, and then reload the paper.

Step one: Make sure that the paper type is appropriate

Use the following steps to make sure that you are using an appropriate paper type.
  1. Remove all the paper from the tray.
  2. Make sure that the paper is clean, unused, plain white, and letter or A4 size paper.
    NOTE:Aligning the product using colored, photo, or used paper can cause the alignment to fail.

Step two: Reload the paper

Once you determine that you are using the appropriate paper type, follow these steps to reload the paper in the product.
  1. Pull out the tray extender, and then flip open the paper catch.

  2. Load paper in the input tray with the short edge forward and the print side down. Slide the stack forward until it stops.

    NOTE:Make sure all the paper in the stack is the same size and type and free from rips, dust, wrinkles, and curled or bent edges.
  3. Slide the paper width guide inward until it rests against the edge of the paper.

Step three: Align the cartridges

After you have loaded the appropriate paper type, try the alignment process again. Follow these steps to align the cartridges.
IMPORTANT: To complete the alignment process, the product must successfully print and scan the alignment page. After the alignment page prints, make sure you complete the steps to scan the page.
  1. Open HP Solution Center:
    HP Solution Center opens.
  2. In HP Solution Center, click Settings ( ).
  3. In the Print Settings area, click Printer Toolbox . The Toolbox opens in a new window.
  4. In the Toolbox, click the Device Services tab, and then click Align the Print Cartridges ( ). A dialog box displays.
  5. In the dialog box, click Print Page . The product prints an alignment page.

  6. Lift the scanner lid.

  7. Place the alignment page with the print-side down on the right front corner of the scanner glass.

  8. Close the scanner lid.
  9. Touch OK on the product control panel. The product scans the alignment page and completes the alignment process.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Run the automatic cartridge cleaning utility

Follow these steps to run the automatic cartridge cleaning utility from the HP software, and then try to align the cartridges again.

Step one: Run the automatic cartridge cleaning utility

Follow these steps to run the automatic cartridge cleaning utility.
  1. Open HP Solution Center:
      Click Start , click All Programs , click HP , and then click HP Solution Center .
      Click the Windows icon ( ), click All Programs , click HP , and then click HP Solution Center .
    HP Solution Center opens.
  2. In HP Solution Center, click Settings ( ).
  3. In the Print Settings area, click Printer Toolbox . The Toolbox opens in a new window.
  4. In the Toolbox, click the Device Services tab, and then click Clean the Print Cartridges ( ). A dialog box displays.
  5. In the dialog box, click Clean to begin the cleaning process. The product cleans the cartridges.
    NOTE:Mechanical noises during the cleaning process are normal. The product prints a test page when the cleaning process finishes.
  6. Examine the test page.
    • If the black and all of the colors are present, and not faded or streaked, continue to the next step to align the cartridges again.
    • If the black or any of the colors are missing, faded, or streaked, skip to Solution three: Clean the cartridge contacts .

Step two: Align the cartridges

After running the automatic cartridge cleaning utility, try to align the cartridges again.
IMPORTANT: To complete the alignment process, the product must successfully print and scan the alignment page. After the alignment page prints, make sure you complete the steps to scan the page.
  1. Open HP Solution Center:
      Click Start , click All Programs , click HP , and then click HP Solution Center .
      Click the Windows icon ( ), click All Programs , click HP , and then click HP Solution Center .
    HP Solution Center opens.
  2. In HP Solution Center, click Settings ( ).
  3. In the Print Settings area, click Printer Toolbox . The Toolbox opens in a new window.
  4. In the Toolbox, click the Device Services tab, and then click Align the Print Cartridges ( ). A dialog box displays.
  5. In the dialog box, click Print Page . The product prints an alignment page.

  6. Lift the scanner lid.

  7. Place the alignment page with the print-side down on the right front corner of the scanner glass.

  8. Close the scanner lid.
  9. Touch OK on the product control panel. The product scans the alignment page and completes the alignment process.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Clean the cartridge contacts

Follow these steps to clean the cartridge contacts, and then try to align the cartridges again.

Step one: Clean the cartridge contacts

Follow these steps to clean the cartridge contacts.
  1. Gather the following materials:
    • Dry foam-rubber swabs, lint-free cloth, or any soft material that will not come apart or leave fibers (coffee filters work well)
    • Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might contain contaminants that can damage the cartridges)
      CAUTION:Do not use platen cleaners or alcohol to clean the cartridge contacts. These can damage the cartridge or the product.
  2. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
  3. Open the cartridge door. The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

  4. Press down on the cartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge toward you to remove it from its slot.

    CAUTION:Do not remove both cartridges at the same time. Remove and clean each cartridge one at a time. Do not leave a cartridge outside the product for more than 30 minutes.
  5. Hold the cartridge by its sides.

  6. Dip a clean foam-rubber swab or lint-free cloth into distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from it.
  7. With the damp swab or cloth, clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge.
    WARNING:Do not clean the ink nozzles on the cartridge. Clean only the copper-colored contacts.

  8. Allow the cartridge contacts to dry for approximately 10 minutes.
  9. Lightly moisten another cotton swab with distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from the swab.
  10. Use the swab to clean the contacts in the carriage, located inside the product. Allow the contacts to dry for approximately 10 minutes.
  11. Hold the cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the product, and then insert the cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle. Make sure that the icon on the cartridge matches the icon on the slot.

  12. Push the cartridge forward into its slot, and then press it upward until it snaps into place.

  13. Repeat these steps for the other cartridge.
  14. Close the cartridge door.

Step two: Align the cartridges

After cleaning the cartridge contacts, try to align the cartridges again.
IMPORTANT: To complete the alignment process, the product must successfully print and scan the alignment page. After the alignment page prints, make sure you complete the steps to scan the page.
  1. Open HP Solution Center:
      Click Start , click All Programs , click HP , and then click HP Solution Center .
      Click the Windows icon ( ), click All Programs , click HP , and then click HP Solution Center .

  2. In HP Solution Center, click Settings ( ).
  3. In the Print Settings area, click Printer Toolbox . The Toolbox opens in a new window.
  4. In the Toolbox, click the Device Services tab, and then click Align the Print Cartridges ( ). A dialog box displays.
  5. In the dialog box, click Print Page . The product prints an alignment page.

  6. Lift the scanner lid.

  7. Place the alignment page with the print-side down on the right front corner of the scanner glass.

  8. Close the scanner lid.
  9. Touch OK on the product control panel. The product scans the alignment page and completes the alignment process.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Replace the problem cartridge

A common reason for alignment failure is a cartridge problem. Follow these steps to replace the cartridge associated with the streaked or missing color on the alignment page.
NOTE:After you replace one or both cartridges, the product automatically prompts you to print an alignment page to align the cartridges.

Step one: Replace the problem cartridge

Follow these steps to replace the problem cartridge.
  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
  2. Open the cartridge door. The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

  3. Press down on the cartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge toward you to remove it from its slot.

    CAUTION:Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  4. Remove the new cartridge from its packaging, and then pull the pink pull tab to remove the plastic tape.
    CAUTION:Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or ink nozzles. Also, do not re-tape the cartridges. Doing so can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  5. Hold the cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the product, and then insert the cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle. Make sure that the icon on the cartridge matches the icon on the slot.
    • The tri-color cartridge goes in the slot on the left
    • The black cartridge goes in the slot on the right

  6. Push the cartridge forward into its slot, and then press it upward until it snaps into place.
  7. Repeat these steps to replace the other cartridge, if necessary.
  8. Close the cartridge door.

    The HP product prompts you to print an alignment page. Continue to the next step to complete the alignment process.

Step two: Align the cartridges

After you replace one or both cartridges, the product automatically prompts you to print an alignment page to align the cartridges. Follow these steps to complete the cartridge alignment process.
  1. Make sure that plain white paper is loaded in the input tray.
  2. Touch OK on the product control panel. The alignment page prints.
  3. Lift the scanner lid.

  4. Place the alignment page with the print-side down on the right front corner of the scanner glass.

  5. Close the scanner lid.
  6. Touch OK on the product control panel. The product scans the alignment page and completes the alignment process.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution five: Service the All-in-One

If you have completed all the preceding steps and are still experiencing a problem, service the product.
Determine if your product is in warranty or out of warranty. If you need help determining your product’s warranty status, go to HP’s Warranty Check Tool .

  • If your product is out of warranty , fees might apply for contacting HP.
