Checking Ink Levels for HP Officejet Pro 8100 ePrinters

Introduction

This document contains steps for checking how much ink is left in the cartridges of your HP product.
NOTE:Ink level warnings and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. When an indicator shows low-ink levels, consider having a replacement cartridge available to avoid possible printing delays. You do not need to replace cartridges until print quality becomes unacceptable.
Click the plus sign () for more information.
When the product is idle, the estimated ink levels display on the product control panel.

1 - Example of the estimated ink levels
Check the ink levels from the software for your operating system.
Follow the steps for your Windows operating system.
  1. Open the HP printer software:
      On the Windows taskbar, click Start ( ), click All Programs , click HP , click the folder for your HP printer, and then click the icon for your HP printer ( ). A window opens with several menu options.
      On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon ( ), click Programs , click HP , click the folder for your HP printer, and then click the icon for your HP printer ( ). A window opens with several menu options.
      On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon ( ), click All Programs , click HP , click the folder for your HP printer, and then click the icon for your HP printer ( ). A window opens with several menu options.
      On the computer screen, right-click and hold the bottom left hand corner, and then click Search ( ). Click Apps ( ), type Officejet 8100 in the search box, and then click your printer icon. A window opens with several menu options.
  2. Click Estimated Ink Levels in the Shopping Resources section. The HP Toolbox opens and displays a graphic of the estimated ink levels for each cartridge.

    NOTE:If the estimated ink levels do not display when the HP Toolbox opens, click the Estimated Ink Levels tab.
Choose one of the following options to check the ink levels from the software.
Follow these steps to check the ink levels from HP Utility.
NOTE:HP Utility is available only if you selected Add HP Utility to Dock during the software installation.
  1. Use one of the following methods to open HP Utility:
      Choose the steps for your Mac OS.
        1. On the main menu, click the Apple icon ( ), and then click System Preferences .
        2. Click Print & Fax . The Print & Fax window opens.
        3. Under Printers , click your product, if more than one printer is listed.
        4. Click Open Print Queue . The Print Queue window opens.
        5. Click Utility . HP Utility opens.
        1. On the main menu, click the Apple icon ( ), and then click System Preferences .
        2. Click Print & Fax . The Print & Fax window opens.
        3. Under Printers , click your product, if more than one printer is listed.
        4. Click Printer Setup .
        5. Click the Utility tab.
        6. Click Open Printer Utility . The HP Utility opens.
      1. Click the HP Utility icon in the Dock. The HP Utility opens.
      2. Under Printers , click your product, if more than one printer is listed. HP Utility opens.
  2. Under Information and Support , click Supplies Status . The estimated ink levels display.
Use one of the following methods to open HP Ink Widget and check the ink levels.
NOTE:HP Ink Widget is available only if you selected Add HP Ink Widget to Dashboard during the software installation.
Click the Dashboard icon in the dock. The estimated ink levels display.

Use one of the following methods to open HP Ink Widget from a keyboard.
  • Mac keyboard : Press the Dashboard key on the keyboard
    The estimated ink levels display.
  • Other keyboards : Press the F12 key.
    The estimated ink levels display.
Follow these steps to print a printer status report.
  1. Load plain, white paper in the paper tray.
  2. On the product control panel, press and hold the Cancel button ( ) for three seconds. The product prints a printer status report.
