Printing from an Apple or Android Mobile Device with HP Wireless Direct

Introduction

If you want to print wirelessly from your Apple or Android mobile device, you can use HP wireless direct printing.
HP wireless direct printing is a feature that allows you to print directly to your HP printer without a network, using a direct peer to peer wireless connection. The instructions in this document provide steps to print with wireless direct printing using Apple's AirPrint or the HP ePrint mobile app.

Printing with HP wireless direct

Follow these steps to print from your mobile device using wireless direct. Your HP printer does not need to be on a wireless network.

The following video demonstrates how to print to an HP Wireless Direct printer from an iPad using Apple's AirPrint.
NOTE:This video shows an HP LaserJet Pro 100 printer, but the steps are the same for your printer.

Step one: Turn on HP wireless direct

Follow these steps to turn on the HP wireless direct feature.
  1. On the product control panel, press the Setup button ().
  2. Press the Right Arrow button () to select Network Setup, and then press OK.
  3. Press the Right Arrow button () to select Wireless Menu, and then press OK.
  4. Press the Right Arrow button () to select Wireless Direct Settings, and then press OK.
      If Wireless Direct Settings is not available in the Wireless menu, you might need to update the HP product firmware. Follow these steps to update the HP product firmware.
      1. Click the link, Get Software and Drivers .
      2. If prompted, type your product name or number, and then click Search.
      3. From the list of matches, click your product.
      4. If prompted, click Software & Drivers Download.
      5. Under Select your operating system, then click 'Next': , click the Down Arrow (), select your operating system, and then click Next.
      6. Click Firmware.
      7. Click the product firmware name.
      8. Click View Directions (), and then read the installation instructions.
      9. Click Download.
      10. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the firmware.
  5. Press the Right Arrow button () to select Wireless Direct, and then press OK.
  6. Press the Right Arrow button () to select On, and then press OK.
  7. Press the Right Arrow button () to select Wireless Direct Name, and then press OK.
    NOTE:When searching for available printers from your Apple mobile device, this is the name that displays for your HP product. To change this name, you will need to connect your product to a computer connected to a wireless network and then access the HP Embedded Web Server (EWS) to change the Bonjour name.
  8. Press the Right Arrow button () to select Wireless Direct Mode, and then press OK.
  9. Press the Right Arrow button () to select Print Only or Open Network, and then press OK.
      The Print Only option allows mobile users to access the printing function of the product. The Open Network option allows mobile users access to the printing function, as well as other product features, such as the EWS. However, choosing the Open Network option might require additional security precautions such as password protection.

Step two: Print from your mobile device

Choose one of the following options to print from your mobile device.
Click the plus sign () for more information.
Follow these steps to print to the HP printer with AirPrint. AirPrint is a feature built into the iOS on your Apple mobile device.
  1. From your Apple mobile device, tap Settings ().
  2. Tap Wi-Fi, and then tap the Wi-Fi toggle to On, if it is currently off. A list of wireless networks displays.
  3. From the list of available networks, tap the name of the HP wireless direct printer.

    NOTE:If the HP wireless direct name does not display, you might be out of range of the HP wireless direct signal. Move closer to the printer until the name displays in the list of networks on your device.
      When connecting the Apple device to the HP wireless direct printer in the network list, you might notice the spinning connection-status icon does not stop. This is expected behavior. You can ignore the spinning circle icon and assume that your Apple device is connected to the printer.
      The spinning circle icon indicates that the HP wireless direct connection does not provide Internet access. Since HP wireless direct is merely a connection between your mobile device and the printer, the mobile device cannot access the Internet through the printer.
      If the spinning circle icon does not go away after 10 seconds, to confirm a good connection, tap the information icon () next to HP wireless direct name. Tap DHCP and confirm that the assigned IP Address is 192.168.223.x (where 'x' is 100, 101, and so forth).
  4. If prompted, enter the HP wireless direct password.
  5. On your Apple device, open the photo, document, or webpage that you previously navigated to that you want to print.
    • Photo:
      1. Open Photos, and then open a photo of your choice.
      2. Tap the action icon ().
      3. Tap Next, and then tap Print.
    • Webpage:
      1. Tap the Safari icon, and then select the webpage that you previously opened.
      2. Tap the action icon (), and then tap Print.
  6. Select your HP wireless direct printer, change your print options as desired, and then tap Print.
Follow these steps to print to the HP printer with the HP ePrint mobile app.
    The HP ePrint mobile app is available for Apple iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch (running iOS 4.2 or later). The app is available for free in the Apple App Store or as an update to HP ePrint Home & Biz on Apple devices.
    1. On your Apple device, open the App Store.
    2. In the Search feature, type HP ePrint, and then tap Search.
    3. In the Search results section, tap HP ePrint, tap FREE, and then tap INSTALL.
    4. If prompted, provide your iTunes account information, and then tap OK.
  1. Turn off Bluetooth.
      Bluetooth is a wireless connection that might interfere with printing. Follow these steps to turn off Bluetooth on your Apple device.
      1. Tap the Settings icon ().
      2. Tap Bluetooth. Make sure that the toggle shows Off.

  2. Tap the Settings icon ().
  3. Tap Wi-Fi, and then tap the Wi-Fi toggle to On, if it is currently off. A list of wireless networks appears.
  4. From the list of available networks, tap the name of the HP wireless direct printer.

    NOTE:If the Wireless Direct Name disappears from the list of available networks at any time, you have moved out of range of the printer. Simply move closer to the printer until the name reappears in the list of networks.
      When connecting the Apple device to the HP wireless direct printer in the network list, you might notice the spinning connection-status icon does not stop. This is expected behavior. You can ignore the spinning circle icon and assume that your Apple device is connected to the printer.
      The spinning circle icon indicates that the HP wireless direct connection does not provide Internet access. Since HP wireless direct is merely a connection between your mobile device and the printer, the mobile device cannot access the Internet through the printer.

  5. If prompted, enter the HP wireless direct password.
  6. Choose which file type you want to print:
      1. Make sure that your HP printer is turned on.
      2. On your Apple device, tap the HP ePrint mobile app icon.

      3. Tap Photos, and then tap Camera Roll, Photo Library, or the name of the photo album that you want to print from.
      4. Tap a photo to open the Preview screen.
      5. Use any of the following options to edit your photo. When you are done editing, tap the photo once to return to the Preview screen.
        • Resize the photo: Pinch open and pinch close to make the image larger or smaller. Note that the quality of a photo can be poorly affected if it is enlarged too much.
        • Reposition the photo: Drag the photo to position it on the preview page.
        • Rotate the photo: Place two fingers on the photo and move them to rotate the photo on the preview page.
        • Undo edits: Double-tap to undo any changes and scale the photo to fit the preview page.
      6. Tap Print.
      Follow these steps to print a Web page with the HP ePrint mobile app.
      NOTE: You must activate the ePrint mobile app to print Web pages. Go to Getting started with the HP ePrint mobile app for steps to activate the app with HP ePrint.
      1. Make sure that your HP printer is turned on.
      2. On your Apple device, tap the HP ePrint mobile app icon.

      3. Tap Web to open the ePrint mobile app Web browser.
      4. Tap the Web address field at the top of the screen, type the name of the website that you want to print a page from, and then tap Done. The website opens.
      5. Navigate to the Web page that you want to print, and then tap Print. The Preview screen displays.
      6. Tap the Settings icon () to change any of the following print settings.
        • Number of copies: Click the plus sign or minus sign to change the number of copies that you want to print.
        • Color or monochrome printing: Next to Color, select On to print the Web page in color, or select Off to print the page in black and white.
      7. Tap Preview to return to the Preview screen, and then tap Print.
      Sending documents as email attachments is an easy way to transfer documents to your Apple device. Follow these steps to print a document attached in an email message with the HP ePrint mobile app. You can print a PDF, .txt file, or a Microsoft Office Word, Excel, or PowerPoint document with the HP ePrint mobile app.
      NOTE: You must activate the ePrint mobile app to print Web pages. Go to Getting started with the HP ePrint mobile app for steps to activate the app with HP ePrint.
      1. Make sure that your HP printer is turned on.
      2. From your email account on your computer, attach the document that you want to print to an email message, and then send it to your email address.
      3. On your Apple device, tap the HP ePrint mobile app icon.

      4. On the ePrint app home screen, tap Email.
      5. Tap your email account, tap Inbox, and then tap the email message with the attached document.
          If you have not added your email account to the ePrint mobile app yet, follow these steps to add the account.
          1. From the app home screen, tap the Settings icon ().
          2. Tap Email accounts, and then tap Add account.
          3. Tap your email service, and then enter your email address, domain (optional), username, and password.
          4. Tap Sign in.
      6. At the bottom of the message, tap the attachment to open it.
      7. Tap Print.
      Many Apple and third-party document management apps support printing with the HP ePrint mobile app. Follow these steps to print a document from a supported app.
      NOTE: You must activate the ePrint mobile app to print Web pages. Go to Getting started with the HP ePrint mobile app for steps to activate the app with HP ePrint.
      1. Make sure that your HP printer is turned on.
      2. Launch the document management app on your Apple device.
      3. Tap the Action icon ( or ), and then tap Open in.
      4. Tap HP ePrint.
        NOTE: If HP ePrint is not an available action menu item, the app does not support printing with ePrint at this time.
      5. Tap Print.
Follow these steps to print to the HP printer with the HP ePrint mobile app.
    The HP ePrint mobile app is available for Android mobile devices running OS 2.2 or later. The app is available for free from Google Play or as an update to HP ePrint Home & Biz.
    1. On your mobile device home screen, tap the Play Store icon, and then tap Apps.
    2. Tap the All applications tab, and then tap the Top free tab.
    3. Scroll to, and then tap HP ePrint.
    4. Tap Install, and then tap OK to download and install the HP ePrint mobile app.
  1. Turn off Bluetooth.
      Bluetooth is a wireless connection that might interfere with printing. Follow these steps to turn off Bluetooth on your Android device.
      1. On your Android device home screen, tap Settings.
      2. Tap Wireless & Networks.
      3. Tap Bluetooth Settings. The Bluetooth Settings screen opens.
      4. Tap the checkmark in the box next to Bluetooth to turn off the Bluetooth connection.
  2. Go to Settings ().
  3. Turn Wi-Fi to ON if it is currently off.
  4. From the network list, select the HP printer name based on the Wireless Direct Name found in the first step.
    NOTE:If the Wireless Direct Name disappears from the list of available networks at any time, you have moved out of range of the printer. Simply move closer to the printer until the name reappears in the list of networks.
  5. On your Android device, tap the HP ePrint mobile app icon.
  6. Choose which file type you want to print:
      1. Make sure that the HP printer is turned on and connected to the local wireless network.
      2. Make sure to load the HP printer with the correct type of paper.
      3. On your mobile device, tap the HP ePrint icon.

      4. Tap Photos.
      5. Tap a photo thumbnail to preview the photo.
      6. To edit the photo, tap the center of the photo, and then make any changes.
      7. When you have made any changes, tap the photo again to return to the preview screen.
      8. Tap Print, or, if necessary, tap Print Setup to select another HP printer or to change the print settings.
      1. Make sure that the HP printer is turned on and connected to the local wireless network.
      2. Make sure to load the HP printer with the correct type of paper.
      3. On your mobile device, tap the HP ePrint icon.

      4. Tap the Web icon, and then type the Web address.
      5. Tap Print. The HP ePrint mobile app shows a preview of the printable area.
      6. Tap Print, or, if necessary, tap Print Setup to select another HP printer or to change the print settings.
      Your mobile device saves files in one of the Saved Files folders when you transfer files from your computer to your mobile device, or when you use your mobile device to scan files. Follow these steps to print files stored on your mobile device with the HP ePrint mobile app.
      1. Make sure that the HP product is turned on and connected to the local wireless network.
      2. Make sure to load the HP product with the correct type of paper.
      3. On your mobile device, tap the HP ePrint icon.

      4. Tap Documents.
      5. Tap the file under the Files tab to preview it.
        NOTE:The Recently Viewed tab shows recently viewed files.
      6. Tap Print, or, if necessary, tap Print Setup to select another HP product and to change the print settings.
