HP Scan to Network Folder or Digital Fax to Network Folder Fails to Install or Function in Windows with Norton Security Software

Issue

The HP Scan to Network Folder or Digital Fax to Network Folder fails to install or work in Windows with any of the following Norton software installed on the computer:
  • Norton Internet Security 2010, 2011, or 2012
  • Norton 360 Version 4.0 or 5.0
In addition, you might experience one of the following issues:
  • The firewall blocks the initial setup and completion of the Scan to Network Folder or Digital Fax to Network Folder setup wizard.
  • After installing the Norton software, the Scan To Network Folder or the Digital Fax to Network Folder that you previously set up no longer functions from the product control panel.
Click the plus sign () next to your operating system for more information.
Follow these steps in Windows XP to make sure that your computer is configured to allow network sharing.

Step one: Allow access to the specified network folder

  1. Click Start (), and then click My Computer.
  2. Right-click the Shared Documents folder, and then click Sharing and Security.
    NOTE:If the Shared Documents folder is not located in My Computer, navigate to the network folder where you currently (or plan to) send scans or faxes, and then right-click that shared folder.
  3. Under the Network Sharing and Security heading, click If you understand the security risks but want to share files without running the wizard, click here.
  4. In the Enable File Sharing window, select Just enable file sharing, and then click OK.
  5. In the Sharing Properties window, select Share this folder on the network, and then select Allow network users to change my files.
  6. Click Apply.
  7. When prompted to reboot the computer, click Reboot Now.
    NOTE:You must reboot (restart) your computer in order for the new changes to take effect.

Step two: Enable Internet connection sharing

  1. Click Start (), and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Network and Internet Connections.
  3. Click Network Connections.
  4. Right-click the active network connection, and then click Properties.
  5. Click the Advanced tab.
  6. Select Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection, and then click OK.
  7. Your computer network is now successfully set to complete the Scan and Fax to Network Folder or Digital Fax to Network Folder Wizard.
Follow these steps in Windows Vista to make sure that your computer is configured to allow network sharing.

Step one: Make sure that the computer user account is password protected

  1. Click the Windows icon (), and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click User Accounts, and then select the account you used to log into the computer.
  3. Click Change your Windows password, and then find the user account you used to log into the computer.
    • If the user account is password protected, continue to the next step.
    • If the user account is not password protected, click Create a password for your account to create a password, and then continue to the next step.

Step two: Define the network location

  1. Click the Windows icon (), and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Network and Internet.
  3. Click Network and Sharing Center.
  4. Click Customize next to Your Network. The Set Network Location window opens.
  5. Select Private, click Next, and then click Close.

Step three: Make sure that the network sharing and discovery options are correct

  1. Open the Network and Sharing Center window.
  2. In the Sharing and Discovery section, make sure that the following network options are set to On:
    • Network Discovery
    • File Sharing
    • Public Folder Sharing (password required)
    • Printer Sharing (password required)
    • Password Protected Sharing
  3. Your computer network is now successfully set to complete the Scan and Fax to Network Folder or Digital Fax to Network Folder Wizard.
Follow these steps in Windows 7 to make sure that your computer is configured to allow network sharing.

Step one: Make sure that the computer user account is password protected

  1. Click the Windows icon (), and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click User Accounts, and then select the account you used to log into the computer.
  3. Click Change your Windows password, and then find the user account you used to log into the computer.
    • If the user account is password protected, continue to the next step.
    • If the user account is not password protected, click Create a password for your account to create a password, and then continue to the next step.

Step two: Define the network location

  1. Click the Windows icon (), and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Network and Sharing Center.
  3. In the View your active networks section, click Public network under your network name. The Set Network Location window opens.
  4. Select Home Network or Work Network, and then click Close.

Step three: Make sure that the network sharing and discovery options are correct

  1. Open the Network and Sharing Center window.
  2. Click Choose homegroup and sharing options.
  3. In the Share libraries and printers section, select Documents.
  4. In the Other homegroup actions section, click Change advanced sharing settings.
  5. In the Advanced sharing settings window, make sure that the following network options are turned on:
    • Network discovery
    • File sharing
    • Public folder sharing (read and write access)
    • Password protected sharing
  6. Click Save changes.
  7. Your computer network is now successfully set to complete the Scan and Fax to Network Folder or Digital Fax to Network Folder Wizard.
