Removing and Replacing the Motherboard

Before you begin

  • You need a Phillips head screwdriver.
  • Remove all CDs and DVDs from the optical drive.
  • Turn off the computer, and disconnect all cables. Be sure to disconnect the network cable before disconnecting the power cord.
  • Transfer the computer to a clear, flat, stable work surface over a non-carpeted floor.
  • Place the computer face-down on a soft flat surface. HP recommends that you place the computer on a blanket, towel, or other soft cloth to protect the touch screen surface from scratches or other damage.
  • Do not remove a component from the protective packaging until you are ready to install it.
WARNING:Make sure the computer is disconnected from power before starting.
CAUTION:This product contains components that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a noncarpeted floor, use a static dissipative work surface (such as a conductive foam pad), and wear an ESD wrist strap connected to a grounded surface.

Removing and replacing the motherboard

To replace the motherboard, first remove it per the instructions below.

Use the following steps to remove the motherboard:
Step 1

Remove the rear cover.

Pull out the USB dongle.

Remove the five screws securing the motherboard shield to the computer.

Each of the screw locations is marked with a stencil of an arrow.

Carefully lift and pull the shield from the computer.

If present, remove the motherboard connector from the board on top of the VESA mount.

Remove the four screws from the VESA mount.

Pull out the VESA mount.

Loosen the four screws on the CPU thermal module.

Remove the screw from the radiator end of the CPU thermal module.

Carefully lift the CPU thermal module off the unit.

Loosen the four screws on the MXM thermal module (if present on the unit) that connect it to the graphics card.

Remove the screw from the radiator end of the thermal module.

Remove any cards present on the motherboard:

Remove the TV tuner connector bracket.

Remove the memory by pressing out on the retaining levers releasing the memory card. Repeat for the second memory card.

Next, remove the CPU.

Gently lift the CPU from the motherboard.

Detach all the system connectors. There are many connectors. Take care to detach all the connectors before removing the board.

Remove the 9 screws connecting the motherboard to the frame.

Lift the motherboard off of the computer.

Put the motherboard in an antistatic bag.

Use the following steps to replace the motherboard:
Step 1

Lift the cables and connectors away from the board and align the screw holes in the motherboard with the standoffs on the computer.

Replace the nine screws to fasten the motherboard to the frame.

Reattach all the motherboard connectors.

Ensure that all connectors have been reconnected to the motherboard.

Replace cards and components:

Replace the MXM thermal module assembly.

First clean the thermal grease from the MXM graphics card.

Apply new thermal grease or a pad to the graphics card.

Align the MXM thermal module back onto the unit.

Tighten the four screws over the MXM graphics card and replace the radiator screw.

Replace the MXM thermal module assembly.

First, clean the thermal grease from the CPU and the thermal module.

Apply the cleaner.

Wipe clean with a cloth.

Apply new thermal grease or a pad to the CPU.

Spread the grease evenly over the CPU.

Align the thermal module back on the unit.

Tighten the four screws on the thermal module.

Replace the radiator screw.

Replace the VESA mount.

Find the two small holes on the VESA mount and the two locator pegs on the bracket.

Align the holes on the mount with the pegs on the bracket and place the VESA mount back on the computer.

Replace the four screws to secure the VESA mount.

Reconnect the motherboard connector on top of the VESA mount if present.

Find the small locating slot on the side of the EMI motherboard shield.

Find the alignment tab on the frame.

While placing the shield back over the motherboard, align the slot on the shield with the alignment tab.

Carefully lower and press the shield into place.

Replace the five screws to reattach the motherboard shield to the frame.

Replace the USB dongle.

Replace the rear cover.
