Setting Up the Printer in OS X v10.8 Mountain Lion network for HP Printers

  • PrintPrint

Introduction

With the release of OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, HP is providing updated print drivers and software for your printer. These updates are available through Apple Software Update. You do not need to download a driver from HP to use your printer with Mountain Lion.
NOTE:If your HP printer was previously set up and working with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or OS X 10.7 Lion, your printer is still supported when you update your Mac to the Mountain Lion operating system. HP recommends that you run Apple Software Update to make sure that you have the latest HP software installed.
Depending on the printer functionality, one or more of the following software components might be included in the HP driver update for Mountain Lion:
  • HP full-feature print driver
  • HP fax driver
  • HP Utility
NOTE:A scan driver is not included in the Apple Software Update for Mountain Lion for your printer. You will no longer be able to scan with your printer when you install the HP driver update with Apple Software Update.
After updating your Mac to Mountain Lion, you might receive one of the following messages if you try to install older HP printer software designed for previous versions of Mac OS, either from an original product CD or from HP Software & Driver Downloads.
  • 'HP Installer can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer'
Figure 1: Example of the 'HP Installer can't be opened...' message

  • 'This HP software may not be compatible...'

To resolve these messages, continue with the instructions in this document to install the updated HP software for Mountain Lion using Apple Software Update.
If your printer was supported in OS X 10.7 Lion, it is supported in Mountain Lion. Go to HP Printers Supported in Mac OS X 10.6, OS X 10.7, and OS X 10.8 to see if your printer is supported.
