CD Drive Tray will not Eject a Disc
How do I get my DirectCD disc to eject?
There are several issues that may prevent a disc from ejecting. If there is a problem ejecting a disc, try the following options:
If writing to a DirectCD formatted disc, the DirectCD software must be loaded into memory before trying to eject the disc. If the software has been disabled in the System Configuration Utility, or removed from the Program Files/Startup group, a formatted disc will not eject. After disabling DirectCD through the System Configuration Utility, components of DirectCD are still loaded from the registry. When an eject request is made, DirectCD attempts to launch the EjectWizard. EjectWizard cannot launch because it is disabled in the System Configuration Utility.
Load DirectCD and eject the disc
- Click Start, Run, type MSCONFIG in the Open: box, and click OK.
- Click the Startup tab, and place a check mark in the Adaptec DirectCD box. (see Figure 1)
- Click Apply, and then click OK.
- When prompted to restart the system, click Yes.
- After the system restarts, eject the disc.
- Click Start, and Run.
- Type DIRECTCD, in the Open: box, and click OK.
- Wait several seconds for the DirectCD software to load into memory, then eject the CD.
Eject the DirectCD formatted (locked) disc
A disc that has been formatted with DirectCD is in use by DirectCD while it is in the drive; it cannot be ejected using the DRIVE EJECT button. Use the DirectCD Wizard to eject the disc. This is because DirectCD must write UDF information to the disc before the disc can eject.
- Right-click the CD drive icon on the task bar.
- Select Eject (this will only work for formatted discs).
- Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
- Right-click the drive letter for the HP CD-Writer drive, and select Eject.
Verify that the drive has power. Disconnect and reconnect the power lead or power cord. If the drive is an external model, plug the power directly into a wall outlet rather than to a surge protector. If the drive is an internal model, use a different power lead for the drive.
If other CD software is running that can take control of the drive, such as audio players, or possibly other packet writing software, the disc may not eject. Verify that no other CD playing or writing software is running in the background.
It may be necessary to manually eject a CD from the HP CD-Writer if the drive door will not open via normal ejection methods. This situation can occur for a number of reasons. Some of the causes can be loss of power to the drive, incorrect insertion of a disc, or an internal mechanical failure inside the HP CD-Writer drive.
NOTE: Not all drives have a manual eject feature. See the procedures below to determine if the drive has the manual eject feature.
NOTE: Different models of HP CD-Writer drives will have different faceplates. Not all drives will look exactly like the drive in Figure 1 below.
Locating the manual eject feature
Check for a small hole on the faceplate of the HP CD-Writer drive. Depending on the model of the drive, the location of the manual eject hole will vary. If the HP CD-Writer drive has a manual eject feature and the hole is present, proceed to “Steps to manually eject discs”, below.
Steps to manually eject discs
- Close all programs and shut down the computer.
- Unplug the PC from the power outlet.
- Locate the manual release hole on the HP CD-Writer faceplate.
- Find something small enough to be inserted into the release hole, such as a sturdy paper clip. Straighten the paper clip so that it can be inserted into the release hole.
- Insert the paper clip straight into the release hole until resistance is felt.
- Once the resistance is felt, keep inserting the paper clip in a pumping motion. The drawer should slowly come out about a quarter of an inch.
- Remove the paper clip.
- Firmly grasp the edges of the CD drawer and gently pull until the drawer is all of the way out.
- Remove the CD.
- Once the disc has been removed, plug the PC back in to the power outlet and restart the system.
