Resolving MSI Startup Errors
This document pertains to HP and Compaq Desktop PCs with Windows 7, Vista, and XP.
An error appears that contains a filename ending with MSI. (MSI refers to the Windows Installer.) This error can appear while Windows is starting up or when a particular software program is opened. This error might appear after using a Registry Cleaner or Registry Fix tool.
See the following error examples. Your error might be slightly different, but it has a filename that refers to or ends with MSI.
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'TrayApp.msi' in the box below.
'HPProductAssistant' the feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available.
After clicking OK, another error message appears. Your message might be slightly different depending on the missing MSI file.
The path 'c:hp\tmp\src\aio\Setup\TrayApp.msi' cannot be found. Verify that you have access to the installation package 'TrayApp.msi' in a folder from which you can install the product TrayApp.
Fixing MSI errors associated with HP software
These types of errors happen because a software application has not finished installing correctly or because an application is trying to repair itself because a file is missing or a registry entry has been removed.
To correct these errors, if you have an installation disc that is associated with the MSI file, insert the disc and click OK. If the error persists, you can search for and browse to the file on your hard drive or reinstall the entire software package.
Common MSI files and their associated software applications that come with HP and Compaq products:
- aiosoftware.msi - HP Photosmart Digital Imaging software
- documentviewer.msi - HP Photosmart Digital Imaging software
- ezarc.msi - Sonic MyDVD
- HpSdpAppCoreApp.msi - HP Easy Internet Signup
- hpproductassistant.msi - HP Photosmart Digital Imaging software
- mydvd.msi - Sonic MyDVD
- Photogallery.msi - HP Photosmart Digital Imaging software
- TrayApp.msi - HP Photosmart Digital Imaging software
NOTE:Do not try to replace only the MSI file. Instead, reinstall the entire software package that is associated with the MSI file. If the error is associated with printer or camera software, reinstall the printer or camera software to re-associate all of the links to the files. You can download HP software applications from the Customer Care web site; or if the software originally came with the computer, you can reinstall them using the HP application recovery process.
For MSI files associated with HP Digital Imaging software (HP Image Zone), insert the installation disc that came with the last HP printer, camera, or scanner that was installed into the top CD/DVD drive. If the disc is not available, download the installation software from HP's Website, use Add/Remove Programs, to remove the current version, and then install the latest version you downloaded from the Web.
Fixing MSI errors for non-HP software
For all other MSI errors, uninstall and reinstall the software associated with the MSI file. For software that came with your HP or Compaq PC, like Sonic MyDVD, reinstall the software using the instructions in one of the following HP support documents, depending on your Windows version:
If errors persist, you can clean up the MSI registry entries by using Microsoft's automated solution. For more information, see Fix problems with programs that can't be installed or uninstalled (in English).
Preventing MSI errors
To prevent these errors from occurring, make sure that registry cleaning and spyware removal utilities do not remove files and registry entries associated with your software. Instead, if you no longer use a particular software title and want to remove all references from the registry, remove the software by using the Add or Remove Programs tool in Control Panel. The software uninstaller will remove the associated entries from the registry.
Some products available for free on the Internet suggest that the registry needs regular maintenance or cleaning. However, use extreme caution when installing and using a registry cleaner. Many registry cleaners generate other MSI errors because they do not recognize valid registry entries and delete them. This can cause more MSI errors and prevent other programs from working.
If you do decide to install a registry cleaner, be sure to research the product thoroughly, and then download and install programs only from software publishers that you trust .
