Installing the Printer Software for a Wireless Network Connection

Introduction

This document explains how to install the print drivers and other software for your printer to use it on a wireless network. If you have more than one computer on the network, install the printer software on each computer that you plan to share with the printer.
NOTE:If you have not already set up your printer, click here for instructions to set up the printer hardware , and then return to this document to set up your printer on a wireless network.
Follow these steps for the Windows XP operating system.

Step one: Prepare for installation

You must have the following items before you install the printer on the wireless network.
To gather your network name (SSID) and password (WEP key or WPA passphrase), you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the router, or contact the manufacturer. HP cannot set up or change the network SSID or the password.
  1. Gather the following items:
    • Network name: The network name is the SSID
      The name assigned to a wireless network.
    • Security passphrase (WEP key or WPA)
    • A computer that is connected to the wireless network
    • Internet access (recommended): HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL
      NOTE:Internet access is not required for you to install your printer with a wireless connection. However, you do need Internet access to use Web Services, get printer updates, and to download drivers from the HP website.
    • Your wireless-capable printer: Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure
  2. Make sure that the printer, router, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the same wireless network you want to connect the printer to.
  3. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cable that is connected to the printer.
  4. Optional : If you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection, follow these instructions to remove the USB installation before you continue.
    1. Click Start ( ), click All Programs , click HP , click the folder for your printer, and then click the icon for your printer. The printer software opens.
    2. Click Printer Setup & Software Selection .
    3. Click Convert a USB connected printer to wireless or Connect a new printer (the phrase differs depending on the version of software your computer is running).
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the printer on your wireless network. Once the printer has been set up on the wireless network, there is no need to continue with the steps in this document.

Step two: Download and install the printer software

NOTE:As an alternative method to downloading the software, you can use the installation CD instead.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. Go to HP Drivers & Downloads . If prompted, type your printer model number, click Go , and then click Drivers .
  4. Make sure that your operating system is selected, and then click Next .
  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver .
  6. Click Download , and then follow the on-screen instructions to save the software to your computer.
  7. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads ), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
NOTE:Connect the USB cable when the installers prompts you to do so. The USB cable is for the installation procedure only. The installer prompts you when to disconnect the USB cable.
Follow these steps for the Windows Vista operating system.

Step one: Prepare for installation

You must have the following items before you install the printer on the wireless network.
To gather your network name (SSID) and password (WEP key or WPA passphrase), you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the router, or contact the manufacturer. HP cannot set up or change the network SSID or the password.
  1. Gather the following items:
    • Network name: The network name is the SSID
      The name assigned to a wireless network.
    • Security passphrase (WEP key or WPA)
    • A computer that is connected to the wireless network
    • Internet access (recommended): HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL
      NOTE:Internet access is not required for you to install your printer with a wireless connection. However, you do need Internet access to use Web Services, get printer updates, and to download drivers from the HP website.
    • Your wireless-capable printer: Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure
  2. Make sure that the printer, router, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the same wireless network you want to connect the printer to.
  3. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cable that is connected to the printer.
  4. Optional : If you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to a wireless network connection, follow these instructions to remove the USB installation before you continue.
    1. Click the Windows icon ( ), click All Programs , click HP , click the folder for your printer, and then click the icon for your printer. The printer software opens.
    2. Click Printer Setup & Software Selection .
    3. Click Convert a USB connected printer to wireless or Connect a new printer (the phrase differs depending on the version of software your computer is running).
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the printer on your wireless network. Once the printer has been set up on the wireless network, there is no need to continue with the steps in this document.

Step two: Download and install the printer software

NOTE:As an alternative method to downloading the software, you can use the installation CD instead.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. Go to HP Drivers & Downloads . If prompted, type your printer model number, click Go , and then click Drivers .
  4. Make sure that your operating system is selected, and then click Next .
  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver .
  6. Click Download , and then follow the on-screen instructions to save the software to your computer.
  7. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads ), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
NOTE:Connect the USB cable when the installers prompts you to do so. The USB cable is for the installation procedure only. The installer prompts you when to disconnect the USB cable.
Follow these steps for the Windows 7 operating system.

Follow these steps for the Windows 8 operating system.
NOTE:If you are not using the latest version of Windows 8, the information in this document might not match. You can get the latest version from the Microsoft Store.

    1. Right-click the Start button ( ) or the lower left corner of the screen, and then click Search .
    2. In the Search box, type HP , and then click the icon for your printer. The printer software opens.
    3. Click Utilities , and then click Printer Setup & Software Selection .
    4. Click Convert a USB connected printer to wireless or Connect a new printer (the phrase differs depending on the version of software your computer is running).
    5. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software. Once the printer has been set up on the wireless network, there is no need to continue with the steps in this document.

Step two: Install the software

Choose one of the following methods to install your HP software.

Follow these steps for Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard or Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard.
NOTE:To install the printer software for a wireless network connection, HP recommends that you download the software from the HP website or use the installation CD that came with your printer. Apple Software Update installations do not support a wireless network connection.

NOTE:You can gather additional network information by printing a Network Configuration Page. The page includes the printer IP address and MAC address, as well as the printer network status.
Follow these steps to print a Network Configuration Page.
  1. On the printer control panel, press the Wireless button ( ). The Wireless Menu opens.
  2. Press the button ( ) next to Wireless Test . The Network Configuration Page prints.

Follow these steps for OS X v10.7 Lion.

  1. Make sure that you have the following requirements before you begin:

Follow these steps to install the software on a Mac running OS X v10.8 Mountain Lion.
NOTE:Older HP software might not be compatible with OS X v10.8 . Do not try to install software that supports earlier versions of the Mac operating system, either from the original printer CD or from the HP website.

Step one: Prepare for installation

  1. Gather the following items:
    • Network name : The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier).
    • Network password : The password might also be called the WEP key or WPA security passphrase.
    • A computer connected to the wireless network .
    • A USB cable (used only during installation). Do not connect the cable now.
  2. Make sure that the router and computer are turned on, and that the computer is connected to the same wireless network you want to connect the printer to. Turn on the printer and place it close to the computer and within range of the router during the setup procedure.
  3. Exit all applications running on your computer.
  4. Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cables from the printer.
  5. Optional : Follow these steps if you previously set up the printer for a USB connection and want to change to a wireless connection.
    1. Click Go in the top Menu bar, and then click Applications .
    2. Click the HP folder , and then click Device Utilities .
    3. Double-click HP Setup Assistant .
    4. Follow the instructions to change your USB connection to a wireless network connection. Once the printer has been set up on the wireless network, there is no need to continue with the steps in this document.
NOTE:You can gather additional network information by printing a Network Configuration Page. The page includes the printer IP address and MAC address, as well as the printer network status.
Follow these steps to print a Network Configuration Page.
  1. On the printer control panel, press the Wireless button ( ). The Wireless Menu opens.
  2. Press the button ( ) next to Wireless Test . The Network Configuration Page prints.

  7. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads ), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
NOTE:Connect the USB cable when the installers prompts you to do so. The USB cable is for the installation procedure only. The installer prompts you when to disconnect the USB cable.
Follow these steps to install the software on a Mac running OS X v10.9 Mavericks.
NOTE:Older HP software might not be compatible with OS X v10.9 . Do not try to install software that supports earlier versions of the Mac operating system, either from the original printer CD or from the HP website.

  3. Place the printer close to the computer during the installation.
  4. Exit all applications running on your computer.

Step two: Connect the printer to the wireless network

Use one of the following methods to connect the printer to a wireless network using WPS.
  1. On the printer control panel, press the Wireless button ( ). The Wireless Menu displays.
  2. On the Wireless Menu , press the button ( ) next to Settings .
  3. Press the button ( ) next to WPS , and then press the button ( ) next to Push Button . The printer prompts you to press the WPS button on the wireless router.
    NOTE:The printer starts a timer that allows about two minutes to press the WPS button on the wireless router.
  4. Press the WPS button on the router. The printer automatically finds the wireless network and configures the connection.
  • If your printer successfully connects to the wireless network, continue with the next step.
  • If your printer did not connect to the wireless network with WPS, you need to use a temporary USB connection to set up your printer on the wireless network. Continue with the next step.
  1. On the printer control panel, press the Wireless button ( ). The Wireless Menu displays.
  2. On the Wireless Menu , press the button ( ) next to Settings .
  3. Press the button ( ) next to WPS , and then press the button ( ) next to PIN . The printer displays a PIN.
    NOTE:The printer starts a timer that allows four minutes to type the PIN in the settings for the wireless router.
  4. Sign in to your router's software interface.
    NOTE:If you need assistance signing in to the router's software interface, contact your network administrator or the router manufacturer.
  5. Under the router's wireless settings for WPS , type the printer PIN (These steps vary by manufacturer.). The printer automatically finds the wireless network and then configures the connection.
  • If your printer successfully connects to the wireless network, continue with the next step.
  • If your printer did not connect to the wireless network with WPS, you need to use a temporary USB connection to set up your printer on the wireless network. Continue with the next step.

Step three: Install the software

The software CD that shipped with your printer is not supported in OS X v10.9 Mavericks. Follow these steps to download the current software from Apple Software Update. Repeat these steps to install the software on each computer that uses the HP printer wirelessly over the same network.
NOTE:Older HP software might not be compatible with OS X v10.9 Mavericks . Do not try to install software that supports earlier versions of the Mac operating system, either from the original printer CD or from HP Software & Driver Downloads.
  1. Click the Apple menu ( ), and then click Software Update . Software Update checks for available updates and updates the database that your computer uses to determine available printer software.
  2. Click Show Details , select any available software updates, and then click Install .
    NOTE: Install all available software updates for best printer performance and functionality.
  3. Turn on the printer, and then make sure that it has paper in the tray and that it is in a ready state.
  4. Make sure that the printer is connected to the wired network, or is connected to the USB port of a Time Capsule or AirPort Base Station.
  5. Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences .
  6. Click Print & Scan , and then click the plus sign ( ) in the lower left corner of the window.
  7. Click Add Printer or Scanner for a full list of printers.
  8. Under Name , click the name of your printer.
    NOTE:Make sure that the printer kind is Bonjour or Bonjour Multifunction .
  9. Click the Use box, and then select the name of your printer in the pop-up menu.
  10. Click Add to add the printer to the queue.
  11. If you are prompted to install any additional software for your printer, click Install , and then follow the instructions to complete the installation.
    NOTE: Quit and restart any applications that were open before adding the printer to use the updated HP software features.
