'Device Driver Software Was Not Successfully Installed' Message Displays in Windows 7 When Installing the Product With a USB Cable

Issue

When you try to install your HP product in Windows 7 with a USB connection, the following error message displays on the computer:
'Device driver software was not successfully installed'
Your computer does not install the product driver, and a printer error icon ( ) appears in the Devices and Printers folder. This error occurs when connecting the USB cable before running an HP software installation from the product CD or a software download.

Solution: Delete the printer error icon, and then install the HP software

Follow these steps to remove the printer error icon, and then install the HP software.

Step one: Delete the printer error icon

Follow these steps to remove the printer error icon from your list of devices and printers.
  1. On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon ( ).
  2. Click Devices and Printers .
  3. Right-click the printer error icon ( ), and then click Remove device .

Step two: Install the product software

Use the following methods to install the HP software with a USB connection.

CAUTION: Do NOT connect the USB cable now. Wait until the on-screen instructions prompt you to connect it. HP recommends using a USB cable that is less than 3 m (10 ft) long.

Should I install with the product CD or download the software?

Don’t worry if you don't have the product CD! You can download the most current software available for your product from the HP Web site at no cost. The following information might help you decide which installation method to use:

The CD provides a quick and easy installation method.If you do not have a CD, you can download the software you need from the HP Web site.
CD installation might not work if you are installing the product on a computer running a newer operating system that released AFTER the HP product released. Even though it takes more time than using the CD, downloading the latest software can help avoid installation issues.

Downloading is the recommended method if your computer operating system released after the HP product released.
The software on the CD is current to the date of the product release.The software that you can download from the HP Web site is the most current software available for your product. HP often updates software and drivers AFTER the product and CD release to the market.
Follow these steps to download the product software, and then install it on your computer.

Step one: Download the software

  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. Go to HP Drivers & Downloads . If prompted, type your printer model number, click Go , and then click Drivers .
  4. Make sure that your operating system is selected, and then click Next .
  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver .
  6. Click Download , and then follow the on-screen instructions to save the software to your computer.
  7. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads ), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Step two: Install the software

During the installation, the Basic Device Software and Product Help are required to enable full product functionality. HP also includes valuable software to help you get the most out of your product.
Follow these steps to install the downloaded software.
  1. When the download is complete and you are ready to install the files, click Open Folder , and then click the downloaded file. The file name ends in .exe .
    NOTE:If you closed the Download Complete screen, browse to the folder where you saved the .exe file, and then click it.
  2. You can accept the default place to save the files. Click Next , and then wait while the installer extracts the files to prepare for installation.
  3. When the Install Wizard starts, follow the on-screen instructions to install the software with a USB connection.
During the installation, the required Basic Device Software and Product Help enable full product functionality. HP also includes valuable software to help you get the most out of your product.
Follow these steps to install the software with the product CD.
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you already connected it).
  2. Turn the product on.
  3. Insert the product CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer to start.
    If the installer does not start automatically, click the Windows icon ( ), click Computer , and then double-click the CD drive.
    NOTE:If the User Account Control screen opens, click Allow to continue.
  4. When the Install Wizard starts, follow the on-screen instructions to install the software with a USB connection.
