Removing and Replacing the mSATA Drive for HP Pavilion dv4-5000, dv4-5100, dv4-5200, dv4-5300, dv4-5a00, and dv4-5b00 Notebook PCs

Before you begin

  • You need a Phillips head screwdriver.
  • Turn off the computer. Disconnect the Ethernet or modem cable. Disconnect the power cord.
  • Transfer the computer to a clear, flat, stable work surface over a non-carpeted floor.
  • HP strongly recommends the use of an anti-static wrist strap and a conductive foam pad when working on the computer.
  • Do not remove a component from its protective packaging until you are ready to install it.
WARNING:The edges of metal panels can cut skin. Be careful not to slide skin along any interior metal edge of the computer.
WARNING:Before starting, power off the computer and wait for components to cool before starting these procedures.
CAUTION:This product contains components that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a noncarpeted floor, use a static dissipative work surface (such as a conductive foam pad), and wear an ESD wrist strap connected to a grounded surface.

Removing the mSATA drive

WARNING:Make sure the computer is disconnected from power before starting.
Follow the steps in this section to remove the mSATA drive.
Step 1

Remove the battery.

Remove the service cover.

Remove the wireless cover.

For more information about removing the wireless cover, refer to the HP support document Removing and Replacing the Wireless Cover .

Step 4

Remove the two Phillips head screws that secure the mSATA drive to the connector board and allow it to release to the spring tension position.

Save the screws for drive replacement.

Grasp the mSATA drive by the edges and pull gently to remove it from the computer.

Place the mSATA drive in an anti-static bag.

Replacing the mSATA drive

Use the steps in this section to replace the mSATA drive.
Step 1

Align the notch in the mSATA drive with the key in the mSATA drive slot.

Insert the mSATA drive into the slot at an angle.

Press the mSATA drive down and replace the two Phillips head screws to hold it in place.

Replace the wireless cover.

Replace the service cover.

Replace the battery.
