This document applies to Windows.
This document lists dial-up networking (DUN) and Remote Access Service (RAS) error codes, and provides a brief description of each code.

NOTE:This document does not provide solutions for these error codes. Restarting your computer, and removing and reinstalling the modem from Device Manager might fix most of these errors.

| 14 | The connection was deleted or reconnected. |
| 600 | An operation is pending. The modem's setting might have changed without restarting Windows. |
| 601 | The port handle is invalid. A modem's setting might have changed without restarting Windows. |
| 602 | The port is already open. Another program is using the modem. |
| 603 | The buffer settings (space allowed in your computer for accessing the modem) are too small. A modem's setting might have changed without restarting Windows. |
| 604 | Wrong information specified. The modem's serial port might have changed. |
| 605 | Cannot set port information. The modem's serial port might have changed. |
| 606 | The port is not connected. A modem's setting might have changed without restarting Windows. |
| 607 | The event is invalid. A modem's setting might have changed without restarting Windows. |
| 608 | The device does not exist. The modem's serial port might have changed. |
| 609 | The device type does not exist. |
| 610 | The buffer is invalid. A modem's setting might have changed without restarting Windows. |
| 611 | The route is not available. NetBIOS might not be configured or installed (NT network). |
| 612 | The route is not allocated. NetBIOS might not be configured or installed (NT network). |
| 613 | Invalid compression specified. A modem's setting might have changed without restarting Windows. |
| 614 | Not enough space was allowed for your computer to access the modem. A modem's setting might have changed without restarting Windows. |
| 615 | The port was not found. The modem's serial port might have changed. |
| 616 | An asynchronous request is pending. A modem's setting might have changed without restarting Windows. |
| 617 | Disconnecting. |

| 618 | The port is not open. A modem's setting might have changed without restarting Windows. |
| 619 | The port is disconnected. The modem's serial port might have changed. |
| 620 | There are no endpoints. The modem's serial port might have changed. |
| 621 | Cannot open the phone book file. The file rasphone.pbk might be missing or corrupt (NT, XP only). |
| 622 | Cannot load the phone book file. The file rasphone.pbk might be missing or corrupt (NT, XP only). |
| 623 | Cannot find the phone book entry. The file rasphone.pbk might be missing or corrupt (NT, XP only). |
| 624 | Cannot write the phone book file. The file rasphone.pbk might be missing or corrupt (NT, XP only). |
| 625 | Invalid information found in the phone book. The file rasphone.pbk might be missing or corrupt (NT, XP only). |
| 626 | Cannot load a string. A modem's setting might have changed without restarting Windows. |
| Error code | Description |
| 627 | Cannot find key. |
| 628 | The port was disconnected. |
| 629 | The port was disconnected by the remote computer. The most common reason for this error is a wrong password. |
| 630 | The port was disconnected due to hardware failure. |
| 631 | The port was disconnected by the user. |
| 632 | The structure size is incorrect. A modem's setting might have changed without restarting Windows. |
| 633 | The port is already in use or is not configured for Remote Access.
![]() NOTE:This error is one of the more common errors that can usually be resolved by removing the dial-up modem name from Device Manager, restarting the PC, and then waiting for Windows Plug and Play process to find and reinstall the modem. |
| 634 | Cannot register your computer on the remote network. Another computer might already be logged on using the same logon. |
| 635 | Unknown error. |
| Error codes | Description |
| 636 | The wrong device is attached to the port. This means your modem might be set up incorrectly. |
| 637 | The string could not be converted. A modem's setting might have changed without restarting Windows. |
| 638 | The request has timed out. A modem's setting might have changed without restarting Windows. |
| 639 | No asynchronous net available. |
| 640 | A NetBIOS error has occurred. Connection speed might be too fast for line quality. |
| 641 | The server cannot allocate NetBIOS resources needed to support the client. |
| 642 | One of your NetBIOS names is already registered on the remote network. Another computer might already be logged on using the same logon. |
| 643 | A network adapter at the server failed. |
| 644 | You will not receive network message popups. |
| 645 | Internal authentication error. Require encrypted password might be set in Server Types. Hand-held device linking software might be active. |
| 646 | The account is not permitted to log on at this time of day. |
| 647 | The account is disabled. |
| 648 | The password has expired. |
| 649 | The account does not have Remote Access permission. |
| 650 | The Remote Access server is not responding. |
| 651 | Your modem (or other connecting device) has reported an error. Modem might have been installed with a wrong .inf file. |
| 652 | Unrecognized response from the device. Modem might have been installed with a wrong .inf file. |
| 653 | A macro required by the device was not found in the device .inf file section. |
| 654 | A command or response in the device .inf file section refers to an undefined macro. |
| Error codes | Description |
| 655 | The <message> macro was not found in the device .inf file section. |
| 656 | The <defaultoff> macro in the device .inf file section contains an undefined macro. |
| 657 | The device .inf file could not be opened. |
| 658 | The device name in the device .inf or media .INI file is too long. |
| 659 | The media .INI file refers to an unknown device name. |
| 660 | The device .inf file contains no responses for the command. |
| 661 | The device .inf file is missing a command. |
| 662 | Attempted to set a macro not listed in device .inf file section. |
| 663 | The media .INI file refers to an unknown device type. |
| 664 | Cannot allocate memory. Shut down some programs or applications and try again. |
| 665 | The port is not configured for Remote Access. |
| 666 | Your modem (or other connecting device) is not functioning. |
| 667 | Cannot read the media .INI file. |
| 668 | The connection dropped. Try dialing in again. |
| 669 | The usage parameter in the media .INI file is invalid. |
| 670 | Cannot read the section name from the media .INI file. |
| 671 | Cannot read the device type from the media .INI file. |
| 672 | Cannot read the device name from the media .INI file. |
| 673 | Cannot read the usage from the media .INI file. |
| Error codes | Description |
| 674 | Cannot read the maximum connection BPS rate from the media .INI file. |
| 675 | Cannot read the maximum carrier BPS rate from the media .INI file. |
| 676 | The line is busy. Try dialing again. |
| 677 | A person answered, rather than a modem. Check to be sure that your number leads to an ISP, not a telephone number. |
| 678 | There is no answer. |
| 679 | Cannot detect carrier. This could be a problem with your ISP. |
| 680 | There is no dial tone. Check your phone for unheard messages. |
| 681 | General error reported by device. Check to make sure your modem is working. |
| 682 | ERROR WRITING SECTIONNAME. |
| 683 | ERROR WRITING DEVICETYPE. |
| 684 | ERROR WRITING DEVICENAME. |
| 685 | ERROR WRITING MAXCONNECTBPS. |
| 686 | ERROR WRITING MAXCARRIERBPS. |
| 687 | ERROR WRITING USAGE. |
| 688 | ERROR WRITING DEFAULTOFF. |
| 689 | ERROR READING DEFAULTOFF. |
| 690 | ERROR EMPTY INI FILE. |
| 691 | Access denied because username and/or password are invalid on the domain. Check to make sure you entered your username and/or password correctly. |
| 692 | Hardware failure in port or attached device. |
| 693 | ERROR NOT BINARY MACRO. |

| 694 | ERROR DCB NOT FOUND. |
| 695 | ERROR STATE MACHINES NOT STARTED. |
| 696 | ERROR STATE MACHINES ALREADY STARTED. |
| 697 | ERROR PARTIAL RESPONSE LOOPING. |
| 698 | A response keyname in the device .inf file is not in the expected format. |
| 699 | The device response caused buffer overflow. |
| 700 | The expanded command in the device .inf file is too long. |
| 701 | The device moved to a bps rate not supported by the COM driver. |
| 702 | Device response received when none expected. |
| 703 | ERROR INTERACTIVE MODE. |
| 704 | ERROR BAD CALLBACK NUMBER. |
| 705 | ERROR INVALID AUTH STATE. |
| 706 | ERROR WRITING INITBPS. |
| 707 | X.25 diagnostic indication. |
| 708 | The account has expired. |
| 709 | Error changing password. |
| 710 | Serial overrun errors were detected while communicating with your modem. |
| 711 | RasMan initialization failure. Check the event log. |
| 712 | Biplex port is initializing. Wait a few seconds and redial. |
| 713 | No active ISDN lines are available. |
| Error codes | Description |
| 714 | Not enough ISDN channels are available to make the call. |
| 715 | Too many errors occurred because of poor phone line quality. This means your phone line might have static. |
| 716 | The Remote Access IP configuration is not usable. |
| 717 | No IP addresses are available in the static pool of Remote Access IP addresses. |
| 718 | PPP timeout. |
| 719 | PPP terminated by remote computer. |
| 720 | No PPP control protocols configured. |
| 721 | Remote PPP peer is not responding. |
| 722 | The PPP packet is invalid. |
| 723 | The phone number, including pre and suf, is too long. |
| 724 | The IPX protocol cannot dial-out on the port because the computer is an IPX router. |
| 725 | The IPX protocol cannot dial-in on the port because the IPX router is not installed. |
| 726 | The IPX protocol cannot be used for dial-out on more than one port at a time. |
| 727 | Cannot access TCPCFG.DLL. |
| 728 | Cannot find an IP adapter bound to Remote Access. |
| 729 | SLIP cannot be used unless the IP protocol is installed. |
| 730 | Computer registration is not complete. |
| 731 | The protocol is not configured. |
| 732 | The PPP negotiation is not converging. |
| 733 | The PPP control protocol for this network protocol is not available on the server. |
| Error codes | Description |
| 734 | The PPP link control protocol terminated. |
| 735 | The server rejected the requested address. |
| 736 | The remote computer terminated the control protocol. |
| 737 | Loopback detected. |
| 738 | The server did not assign an address, therefore, the modem cannot dial in. |
| Error codes | Description |

| 739 | The remote server cannot use the Windows NT encrypted password. |
| 740 | The TAPI devices configured for Remote Access failed to initialize or were not installed correctly. |
| 741 | The local computer does not support encryption. |
| 742 | The remote server does not support encryption. |
| 743 | The remote server requires encryption. |
| 744 | Cannot use the IPX net number assigned by the remote server. Check the event log. |
| 745 | A file needed to dial-up is missing. |
| 752 | A syntax error was encountered while processing a script. |
| 753 | Connection could not be disconnected, created by multiple protocol router. |
| 754 | Could not find multilink bundle. |
| 755 | Cannot dial due to custom dialer. |
| 756 | Connection is already being dialed (probably be another process). |
| 757 | Remote Access cannot automatically start. See event log. |
| 758 | ICS is already enabled. |
| 760 | Enabling routing capabilities failed. |
| Error codes | Description |
| 761 | Enabling of ICS failed. |
| 763 | ICS failed due to more than one LAN connection to share at the same time. |
| 764 | No smart card reader installed. |
| 765 | ICS cannot be enabled. LAN address already exists (automatic addressing). |
| 766 | No certificate. |
| 767 | ICS cannot be enabled. More than one of the same IP Addresses exist on the same private LAN. Reconfigure the LAN so that only unique IPs are used. |
| 768 | Encryption process failed. |
| 769 | Destination not reachable. |
| 770 | Remote computer rejected this connection attempt. |
| 771 | Network busy. |
| 772 | Remote hardware is incapable of handling connection request. |
| 773 | Destination number changed. |
| 774 | Temporary failure. |
| 775 | Call blocked by remote computer. |
| 776 | Remote hardware is using do-not-disturb feature. |
| 777 | Remote modem out of service. |
| 778 | Unable to verify the server's identity. |
| 779 | Connection requires a smart card. Enable smart card. |
| 780 | Attempted function not valid on this type of connection. |
| 781 | No valid certificate found for encryption. |
| Error codes | Description |
| 782 | Network Address Translation (NAT) installed as the routing protocol. Remove before attempting to enable ICS. |
| 783 | ICS cannot be enabled. LAN selected as private network disconnected or not present. |
| 784 | User name is different than that required by the smart card. |
| 785 | Connection not configured for smart card. Enable this from connection's properties. |
| 786 | L2TP connection failed. No valid computer certificate. |
| 787 | L2TP connection failed. Security could not authenticate remote computer. |
| 788 | L2TP connection failed. Security and remote computer unable to establish parameters. |
| 789 | L2TP connection failed. Security encountered processing error with remote computer. |
| 790 | L2TP connection failed. Certificate validation failed at the remote computer. |
| 791 | L2TP connection failed. Security policy not found. |
| 792 | L2TP connection failed. Security negotiation timed out. |
| 793 | L2TP connection failed. Error during Security negotiation. |
| 794 | Framed Protocol RADIUS is not PPP. |
| 795 | Tunnel Type RADIUS not correct. |
| 796 | Service Type RADIUS is neither Framed nor Callback Framed. |
| 797 | Modem not found or busy. |
| 798 | Certificate that uses Extensible Authentication Protocol not found. |
| 799 | ICS cannot be enabled. IP address conflict. Ensure that only the host computer uses IP 192.168.0.1 |
| 800 | VPN server unavailable, unreachable, or is not configured for this connection. |
| 995 | Operation aborted. |
| Error codes | Description |
| 1382 | Max length exceeded. |
| 1793 | Account expired. |
| 2250 | Network connection does not exist. |
