Introduction

To print to an HP Deskjet or to an HP Professional series printer from Windows 95, a compatible driver must be installed. A driver is software that communicates between the operating system (Windows) and the printer. This document describes how to obtain and how to install the appropriate printer driver. This document only addresses the use of the Windows 95 operating system.

Installing Windows 95 printer drivers that are integrated into the operating system

If one of the links above brought you here, the most current driver is already integrated into Windows 95. Follow the appropriate instructions below to install the correct printer driver.

Local Installation

If the printer is connected directly (parallel) to the computer, follow these instructions for standard installation of the appropriate driver using the Add Printer Wizard:

Click Start , Settings , and Printers .
Double-click Add Printer .
Click Next .
Select Local Printer .
Click Next .
In the Manufacturer list, choose HP .
In the printer list, choose the model of the printer.
Click Next .
Click the desired port (usually LPT1).
Click Next .
Select Yes if this printer is to be the default printer or No if this printer is to handle only selected print jobs.
Click Next to continue.
Click Finish to complete the installation.

Insert the appropriate disk or CD, and follow the instructions on the screen if asked for a Windows disk. Once the installation is finished, the printer will be listed in the Printers window.

NOTE:

Windows will ask for the Windows 95 installation disk in some circumstances. If you insert the disk, and Windows cannot find the printer drivers, contact the computer manufacturer or Microsoft (R) for assistance in locating the printer drivers.

Close the Printers window, and try printing.
