Introduction

This document contains instructions for clearing a paper jam. Regular paper, envelopes, or specialty paper may get stuck or jammed in the printer. Follow the instructions to find and remove jammed paper (or other paper) from the printer.

CAUTION:

Never lift the front cover and pull jammed paper out from the printer. Pull it from the back of the printer or the paper In tray. Pulling paper from inside the front cover can cause mechanical damage to the printer.

Before beginning

Follow the instructions in this document in the order provided. Skipping steps may damage your printer.

NOTE:

Paper jams can be prevented. If you have a recurring paper jam, click here for instructions on how to prevent paper jams (bpd09176) (in English).

Step one: Check for and remove any paper stuck in the paper In tray

Remove all loose paper from the paper In tray.
Pull loose paper from the In tray Do not pull jammed paper from under the front cover
Press the RESUME (bpd09142) (in English) button.
- If you cleared the paper jam, skip to Step four: Make sure the print carriage can move freely .
- If the paper is still jammed, continue on to the next line.
If more than one sheet is stuck in the printer, remove the paper one sheet at a time. Take hold of a sheet in the middle of the stack with both hands and firm, even pressure, pull the sheet toward you. Usually, removing one or two sheets from the middle of the stack releases the pressure and the rest of the stack can be removed.
After you have cleared the paper, check to make sure no scraps of paper are stuck in the printer.
- If you cleared the paper jam, skip to Step four: Make sure the print carriage can move freely .
- If the paper is still jammed, continue on to the next section.

Step two: Clear jam from the back of printer

If the paper jam is not easy to reach from the In tray, follow the instructions to clear the paper from the back of the printer. The back of the printer could have a rear access door or a two-sided printing accessory (also known as a duplexer).

Remove the rear access door to clear the paper jam

Skip to the two-sided printing accessory section if you have a two-sided printing accessory instead of a rear access door.

Turn the knob on the rear access door counter-clockwise.
Remove the door.

Pull the jammed paper out of the printer.

Check to make sure no scraps of paper are stuck in the printer.
Put the rear access door back into the printer.
Turn the knob on the door clockwise.
- If you cleared the paper jam, skip to Step four: Make sure the print carriage can move freely .
- If the paper is still jammed, continue on to the next section .

Remove the two-sided printing accessory to clear the paper jam

Simultaneously press the RELEASE buttons on each side of the module and remove it.

Pull the jammed paper out of the printer.
Check to make sure no scraps of paper are stuck in the printer.
Push the module back into the printer until it snaps firmly into place. (Do not press the buttons on the ends of the module while replacing it.)
- If you cleared the paper jam, skip to Step four: Make sure the print carriage can move freely .
- If you did not find any paper jammed, continue on to the next line.
Press the button on top of the two-sided printing accessory and open the door.

Pull the jammed paper out of the module.
Check to make sure no scraps of paper are stuck in the printer.
Close the duplexer door.
- If the paper jam cleared, skip to Step four: Make sure the print carriage can move freely .
- If the paper is still jammed, continue on to the next section.

Step three: Lift the front cover and slowly remove any jammed paper

After trying all the other options listed, open the front cover, grasp the jammed paper and SLOWLY pull it out. Click here if the jammed paper does not come out of the printer.

CAUTION:

Slowly pull the paper out from under the front cover only as a last resort. Pull the paper from the back of the printer or inside the paper In tray. Never lift the front cover and pull jammed paper out from the printer. Pulling the paper out quickly increases the chances of damaging the printer: Pull SLOWLY.

Step four: Make sure the print carriage can move freely

Unplug the power cord .
Check to see if the print carriage moves freely from one side of the printer to the other. If the carriage is to the right and out of plain view, skip to Step five: Reload and test the printer . Do not try to force it to move if it is hung up on something.
CAUTION: Be careful not to force the print carriage . If the carriage is stuck, forcing it to move damages the printer.
- If the carriage moves freely, skip to Step five: Reload and test the printer .
- If the carriage does not move, continue with the next step.
Remove the print cartridges. Click here for help removing or installing your cartridges (bpd09139) (in English).
Gently move the print cartridge to the far right of the printer.
Remove the paper from the paper In tray, but do not remove the drawer.
Remove the two-sided printing accessory or rear access door.
With your fingers, rotate the rollers “up” three full rotations.

Push the two-sided printing accessory or rear access door back into the printer until it snaps firmly into place. (Do not press the buttons on the ends of the module while replacing it.)
Replace the print cartridges. Click here for help removing or installing your cartridges (bpd09139) (in English).
Plug the power cord into the printer.
Turn on the power .

Step five: Reload and test the printer

After you have removed the jammed paper, make sure that the printer is still functioning properly.

Reload the printer with plain Inkjet paper.
Perform a self-test by pressing and holding the RESUME (bpd09142) (in English). button until the printer starts printing. A test page should print.

The jammed paper does not come out of the printer
