Finding What Type of Processor Is Installed without Opening the Computer Case

This information applies to Windows 7, Vista, XP, Me, and Windows 98.
The procedures in this document describe how to identify the type of processor installed in your computer without opening the case.
To find processor information about your computer, click the plus sign next to the procedure that applies to your computer operating system.
Use one of the following methods to check the type of processor installed:

  • In Windows, using System Properties:
    1. Click Start , and then click Control Panel .
    2. Click System and Maintenance , and then click System .

  • In the CMOS Setup:
    1. Restart the computer. When the first logo screen displays, press the F10 key to enter the Setup screens.
    2. From the Main screen in Setup, use the right arrow key to move to the Advanced menu. The processor manufacturer and speed display.

  • In Windows, using System Properties:
    Right-click My Computer , select Properties , and then click the General tab. The processor type and speed display in the System Properties window.

  • In the CMOS Setup:
    1. Restart the computer. When the first logo screen displays, press the F1 key to enter the Setup screens.
      NOTE:On some computers, this key press might be different. For example, some computers use the F10 , Esc , or Del keys.
    2. From the Main screen in Setup, use the right arrow key to move to the Advanced menu. The processor manufacturer and speed display.
