Enabling Closed Captioning in Media Center (Windows 7, Vista, XP)

This document pertains to HP computers with Windows 7, Vista Premium, and Windows XP Media Center Edition.
Closed captioning displays speech in a TV program as text along the bottom of the viewing area. This document explains how to enable Closed Captioning in the Media Center software.

Enabling Closed Captioning in Windows 7 and Vista

Use the following steps to enable Closed Captioning in Windows 7 and Vista:
  1. Start Windows Media Center using one of the following methods:
    • Click Start , and click Windows Media Center .
    • Double-click the Media Center icon on the Windows desktop.
    • Press the green Start button on the remote control.
  2. Click Tasks , and then click Settings .
  3. Click TV , and then click Closed Captioning .
  4. Select one of the following settings below Caption display . Click the plus or minus sign to change the selection.
    Select On to view speech as text in a TV program containing the captioning signal.
    Select On when muted to display speech when you have muted the sound in a TV program containing the closed captioning signal.
    Select Off to turn off captions.

  5. Click Save when done.
    When viewing a TV program containing the closed captioning signal, speech used in the TV program displays at the bottom of the viewing area.

Enabling Closed Captioning in Windows XP

Use the following steps to enable Closed Captioning in Windows XP:
  1. Double-click the Media Center icon on the Windows desktop or press the green Start button on the remote control.
  2. Click My TV .
  3. Wait for the TV image to appear, and then click Settings .
  4. Click Audio .
  5. Select one of the following settings next to Caption display:
    • Select On to view speech as text in a TV program containing the captioning signal.
    • Select On when muted to display speech in a muted TV program containing the closed captioning signal.
    • Select Off to disable captioning.
  6. Click OK to save the changes.
    When viewing a TV program containing the closed captioning signal, speech used in the TV program displays at the bottom of the viewing area.
