Support details

HP PhotoSmart (Symbios Logic) SCSI Controller on an HP Pavilion PC with a USB Port
ISSUE: In their default configuration, the HP Pavilion PC Models 7340P and 7370V only leave IRQ9 available. The HP PhotoSmart SCSI card and driver do not support this IRQ. Instead, the installation program proposes a real mode driver, which does not need an IRQ. If installing the real mode driver, the scanning will work fine. Following the "Change the BIOS setting on the HP Pavilion PC" workaround stated below may be advisable as problems may develop later when other hardware is installed or if problems develop with hardware already installed.
The normal install sequence for installation of the HP PhotoSmart Scanner
  1. Choose Shut Down the Computer from the Installation screen.
  2. Install the SCSI Card and restart the computer.
  3. The driver tries to load assuming there is an open IRQ (installation is successful).
  4. If no open IRQs exists, the driver asks for a re-boot. It will then disable the BIOS, add a fix_pnp.exe to the AUTOEXEC.BAT and lets Windows 95 assign an IRQ. If Windows 95 has an open usable IRQ, then installation is successful.
  5. If no open usable IRQs exist in Windows 95, the driver asks for a re-boot. It will then remove the fix_pnp.exe from the AUTOEXEC.BAT and loads the real mode driver information into the CONFIG.SYS. The real mode driver does not need any IRQs to run in Windows 95. (Installation is successful).
A conflict may occur when Windows 95 loads or when closing the HP PhotoSmart Photo Scanner application window and/or the scanner icon disappears from the Windows task bar. This indicates a conflict between hpi_auto.exe, which enables automatic start of the HP PhotoSmart scanner application, and the SCSI driver (hpi_scsi.dll). Hpi_auto causes an invalid page fault in hpi_scsi.dll.
SOLUTION: By changing one setting in the HP Pavilion PC BIOS, an IRQ supported by the HP PhotoSmart SCSI controller can be freed. In this case, the HP PhotoSmart installation adds a program (fix_pnp.exe) in AUTOEXEC.BAT. As a result, the USB port is moved from IRQ10 to IRQ9 and the SCSI card can now use IRQ10. In this configuration, the scanner and its SCSI controller work fine.
NOTE: Changing the BIOS setting manually may cause other problems for some of the HP Pavilion PC subsystems. Make certain to follow the process steps below.
Changing the BIOS settings on HP Pavilion PC Models 7340P, 7365, or 7370V in order to install the HP PhotoSmart Photo Scanner
  1. Follow the HP PhotoSmart Photo Scanner installation guide up to the point where you turn off the PC to install the SCSI card in the PC. At this point follow the instructions listed in step 2 below before proceeding with the installation.
  2. After installing the SCSI card, change the HP Pavilion BIOS settings as follows:
    1. Power on the HP Pavilion PC and press F1 when the blue HP logo appears to enter the ROM based setup program.
    2. When in setup, choose the Advanced configuration menu.
    3. Move the cursor down to select the Plug and Play configuration menu.
    4. Change the first entry from "Use ICU" to "Use Setup Utility."
    5. Press F10 to save changes and reboot PC.
  3. You now have OPEN, usable IRQ available (IRQ 10) try the following:
    1. Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Add this as the first line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file: fix_pnp. Click File, Save, and close AUTOEXEC.BAT.
    2. Restart the PC. This should move the Symbios Logic card to the available IRQ.
    3. Check Device Manager again to see if yellow exclamation symbol is gone. If the yellow exclamation symbol is gone then close Device Manager and Control Panel.
    4. Choose Start, Run.
    5. Type in D:\AUTORUN.EXE (substitute the letter of your CD ROM drive for ā€˜D’). The scanner should now be found and allow you to install the HP PhotoSmart Photo Scanner software as normal.
