ISSUE:
Blurry round spots, white circles, or light water marks appear on the photo. This situation is typical in indoor photos where the flash is the primary source of light.
Figure 1: : Image distortion caused by dust particles reflecting the camera flash
SOLUTION:
Follow the recommendations below to prevent the distortion caused by the camera flash reflecting off dust or water particles:
  • Turn off the flash. The exposure time will be long, so the subject must remain still.
  • Turn off the flash and increase the sensitivity, or ISO setting. Set the AE Mode to Spot Metering, aim the camera to a bright area, lock the focus and then frame the subject again.
  • Increase the amount of light available to the subject to reduce the reflective effect of the dust.
  • Use the Night flash setting to decrease the intensity of the flash. The exposure time will be long, so the subject must remain still.
CAUSE:
The round spots are caused by dust particles floating in the air close to the camera lens. When a photo is taken in a dark indoor setting, the dust particles reflect the flash with enough intensity to wash out portions of the image.
Taking photos close to water can also cause this issue. The flash reflects off of the water particles.
